Upon learning about the magical plant Kisstletoe and Fluttershy's fondness for the tale of finding a soulmate, Discord gets an idea for the perfect Hearth's Waring gift for her. He'll find her soulmate!

What could possibly go wrong?

This is an automatic favorite! I just adore any magical lore an author cooks up, and the kissletoe is not only a great name, but a great concept I could see happening in canon! Fantastic job!

And the fluttercord and the strong emphasis of friendship throughout between Discord, Pinkie, and Applejack was a great way to wrap up Christmas for me.

I especially like how you still had Fluttershy have SOME sort of physical reaction, even if it didn't glow. I thought that was clever.

I like that she also had mistletoe for him. She didn't need kissletoe to know what she wanted.

Bravo!

It is really hard to find a good fluttercord stories these days, with most of my favorites being ones written years ago. This is really well written, and I can just imagine the chaos Discord would cause with the kissletoe and soulmates.

Could I by chance write a sequel to this for Valentines?

Fluttershy adorably nosed the lid off of one of the plates.

augh, it always is adorable!

"The sandwiches aren't quite so spectacular, I'm afraid; I tried to get them to sing, but they would just start screaming when they were dunked in soup or au jus." The cookies, at least, couldn't voice their pain when eaten.

love how casually disturbing this bit and its implications are, and how Fluttershy just sails past it without comment. which is something one has to do being friends with Discord, i suppose!

Discord was a fairly voracious reader, himself; the last book he'd finished cover to cover was the Ogres and Oubliettes monster manual, but aside from that he also enjoyed books on history and magical quantum theory.

Discord, more like Discnerd, am i right?

"Oh! You've find Rarity's book!"

ah, that makes sense, complete with color scheme!

"They say that if a pony comes near it, it makes their cutiemark glow. If they find another pony with a glowing cutiemark, it's said that the two of them become soulmates." She giggled; Discord could see that the pale yellow fur of her cheeks had turned a pleasant pink. "It's a bit silly, isn't it?"

soulmate AU! and also, very fitting to the magical biology of MLP!

It was a bit early in the season to start tooting his own horn--the tuba he kept around was specifically for the purpose of annoying all his neighbors, the gift that kept on giving--but in his opinion, it was his greatest plan yet.

hehehe, very Discord

The perky pink party pony jumped up and down in place. Discord could have sworn that he heard 'boing boing' sound effects as she did so.

oh, so those noises are foleyed into the show, instead of being diegetic? figures!

There was no malice behind her words as she giggled. The earth mare didn't have a single mean bone in her body. Discord knew; he'd looked, himself.

Some other more skittish creature might have asked 'What kind of things?,' but not Discord. He was familiar with these sorts of superstitions; they had a lot more power than ponies tended to realize.

Pinkie's existence is proof enough that Equestria doesn't quite work by logical rules. well, there was an episode about exactly this with Twilight, after all! but being reminded of this definitely helps to make Discord feel more like an organic part of the universe than an excuse for the show writers to make pop culture reference jokes

He plucked a sprig of the stuff from the cluster with his talons. Then he took another, placing it into a different pocket dimension, in case something happened to the first.

hehe, he really is very casual with using those pocket dimensions!

Despite what everycreature tended to think when they met him, there were limits to what he could and couldn’t do. He was the god of chaos, after all, not the god of convenience.

definitely good to keep in mind, and Discord not wanting to disturb a bear or yeti earlier makes more sense!

"Pink Pony and Goat Snake good friends of Yaks! You look out for us; we look out for you!"

hehe, love this name for Discord!

He made a mental note to ask Pinkie about whether Hearths Warming was a tradition that yaks took part in, and if so, what presents might be appropriate for them.

i do wonder what Discord would think of their smashing-centric traditions, considering how much disorder it creates

...something about Fluttershy's big, open, honest green eyes made him want to open his heart to her. And mortal creatures usually didn't like it when he did that; he frequently had to remind himself that not every creature was as literal-minded as he.

hehehe, i can just imagine the incidents that taught him this lesson

Once inside, Discord saw that one of the employees--a beige-coated pony with a lovely rose-red mane and tail--came over to help him.

oh nice, the origin story of Dr. Whooves x Roseluck!

"Oh my gosh! I was just coming to show you..." Lyra galloped to Bon Bon, and Discord saw that the golden lyre on her flank was shining that same rosy pink.

augh, i always love being reminded that LyraBon exists and is canon! so wonderful

She shook her head, nearly making her Stetson fly off. Discord had to wonder how it never did; did she staple it to her mane?

earthpony magic, clearly!

"You want my advice? I'd say to give 'er the kisstletoe as is. Let 'er know what ya went through to get it." She smiled up at him. "Y'know me. 'Honesty's the best policy.' That's my motto."

aww, love how perfectly AJ this is, and how seamlessly this friendship lesson would slot into the show itself

"So she's in? Cool!" As she trotted up to the barn doors, Discord held out the sprig of kisstletoe yet again. Rainbow Dash's cutiemark glowed pale yellow.
If there was a way to take flight angrily, Discord discovered it right then and there. "Oh, come on!" he muttered to the closing wooden doors.

hehe, great comedic timing. and AppleDash does end up winning in the canon, so i would hope they are soulmates by the rules of the universe somehow!

A single sprig of mistletoe lay in the center of the box. Not magical, but traditional.
Nothing big, but right then and there, Discord realized that it was exactly what he'd wanted.

aww, i love this! the perfect response to Discord's gift, which also brings the story back around to the context at its beginning.

"I know. It's what I love about us." She placed a little yellow hoof on Discord's shoulder, right where the green yarn met the red. "It's what I love about you."

you do such an amazing job with the Fluttercord cuteness overload. i feel like i am drowning, but in a good way, augh

a great take on the prompt that would have perfectly fit into the show if the show allowed itself to ship this hard. wonderful stuff!
