The Golden Crane flies for Tarmon Gai'don.

Somepony asks Pinkie Pie a stupid question about mental health. So she gives them a stupid answer.

A crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion, for which it contains very large spoilers. Probably more wholesome than you'd guess from the tags or the title.

A crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion,

wholesome

And that tag and Search and... Wait, what was that title? Go back, there's no way I read that correctly.
I did. What the actual— Wait. I know that name. Let's see what this is about...

Yes, a penguin. Nopony really knew what was going on with that.

Some parallels work better than others, and some are just single lines.

The Angel attacks are easily one of the better ones... though I have to wonder what would happen if they ever did penetrate Terminal Doorstep.

Maud stole the Staff of Sameness, the artifact by which cutie marks are removed.

This entire story was inspired by Starlight's wooden Lance of Longinus, wasn't it?

Marble getting her cutie mark. Maud helping clean up the ashes afterwards.

I have several questions.

I'm not sure what I expected, but this was a surreal delight. And that ending. The NERV!

Thank you for a very important message. Get in the goddamn robot Take your goddamn pills.

10032467 Actually wholesome is a bit of a leap, but I think I would say more wholesome than you might guess from the title.

Mostly it translates as 'This is not a scat story. That's not what the title means.'

With a string of clouded quartz around her neck, Limestone knew who she was and where she belonged in the world

This is the kind of thing that needs to be highlighted again  It's all the better for how godforsakenly deplorable so much of the rest of this is.

And I do love how Pinkie took the time to throw shade at Sunburst. The whole story's sort of a cautionary tale, so it works really nicely as sort of, "Look, just don't end up like that one and you'll be relatively alright" message.

I have to wonder what would happen if they ever did penetrate Terminal Doorstep.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that one. I was at one point going to show Maud heading down to Terminal Diamond Dogma, but thought it made more sense for that to be the Castle of the Two Sisters :twilightsheepish:

This entire story was inspired by Starlight's wooden Lance of Longinus, wasn't it?

I think we can probably go one further and guess that The Cutie Map two-parter was inspired by that in canon :trollestia: Big Jim's response tweet was 'Not directly.' Which could mean a lot of things!

For the story, it was a few things - the title (I'm really glad you had that reaction to it!), the staff design/what it did/the idea of introducing it to the Tree, and more than anything how the three Pie sisters matched up. And then I remembered that bunny stampedes are legitimately a thing in FIM, and realised how the story might work.

The NERV!

:pinkiehappy: Celestia's in her castle, all's right with the world.

I'm not sure what I expected, but this was a surreal delight.

:yay: Mission accomplished!

This is the kind of thing that needs to be highlighted again

:pinkiehappy: There is a perfect Limestone Pie clip to illustrate, in case anyone doesn't get it!

godforsakenly deplorable

I was weighing up if this meant the misery, weird inappropriateness and fluffy violence, or the puns, and figured probably the latter.

And I do love how Pinkie took the time to throw shade at Sunburst. The whole story's sort of a cautionary tale, so it works really nicely as sort of, "Look, just don't end up like that one and you'll be relatively alright" message.

That is an excellent take on it  Of all the fairly regular characters, I think Sunburst may be the most consistently bad at friendship, and the most oblivious to that failing. And some of the bits with him and Starlight are unpleasant to watch. He really shouldn't be teaching in that school!

I feel like I just watched the movie for the first time all over again. In that haunted 'what the hell did I just watch/read' way. The references were spot on, the characterizations were good, and it even got me to help understand Eva better by the end of it in some ways. Little things, here and there that I had missed before.

That it all was happening because of bunny stampedes is just another small comedy on the whole thing, but it adds onto the whole thing of itself. I enjoyed it, and now I'm wondering if you might figure out a way to adopt Berserk in the same manner. :pinkiecrazy: An idle fantasy, but that's kind of the point for them in some ways.

10263336 Thanks very much! I'm really glad it felt that way to you. That's what I was going for, but I'm not sure how many others got the same thing. There is so much to pick up on in the series! I watched it all through, then did lots of reading, and then studied the script and wikis a lot when writing this. Things like Rei as the quantum ghost I'd completely missed before. Oddly enough I'm just now rewatching the series for the first time since writing this, and noticing further connections I'd missed before. Things like how Misato's propositioning at the end of Instrumentality is a callback to what Shinji was imagining when merged with the Eva after fighting/eating Zeruel. In many ways, End of Evangelion doesn't introduce much weirdness, just brings it into focus more from where it originally cropped up in the last few episodes, and brings it all together where those ones focus on Shinji, Asuka and Rei in turn.

The bunny stampedes are the stupidest thing, but I think they're the right balance of absurd amongst the early bits of the story where it's otherwise fairly gloomy and focused on the interactions between the main cast, and that sets the stage for both elements becoming more extreme as the story goes on.

Ah, sorry, but Evangelion is the only anime I've seen. And, after writing this, I'm even less certain about crossovers - to really get it, a reader has to be very familiar with both properties, which means either a tiny reader base, or sticking to material that everyone knows (like Star Wars). So I think I'll be avoiding them unless there are ideas I really can't shake. I'm undecided on the South Park one I've had in mind for a while. I agree, though, that's exactly what idle fantasies are for

Thanks again for reading and commenting! This story was a world I dived into every day, so seems a big deal in my mind, but its launch here wasn't the greatest success :twilightsheepish:

I'm glad that you got something else out of writing this and the show/film as a result. There are lots of reasons that it's a great story after all, and it's fun to see how you managed to make a parallel to this crossover as a result. The launch might not have gone so well, like 01's first outing, but you miss 100% of the shots you never take. That you tried is still something to cheer about!

That said, I do recommend looking into Berserk, the 90's anime incarnation of it, if you are able to find it. It's an excellent story as well, and while not as complicated at times as Eva can get with how it presents itself it still has powerful images and moments that have stuck with me for decades since I first saw it back in 98-99. Not to make another story, as this one took oodles of time I imagine, but just to enjoy it for what it is. :raritywink:

10396043 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it

Came around after seeing PaulAsaran's review.

My first thought is: What the hell did I just read? :pinkiegasp:
Second thought: The retelling the Eva series crossed over with Ponies. :pinkiehappy:
Third thought: How does that help any... As told by Pinkie Pie:pinkiecrazy: ... Right makes perfect sense now. Carry on.

So nice job merging these together and making it work better then it has any right to be.

Also

The H in Neon Genesis Evangelion is for Happiness.

I'm having trouble finding the H here. Can anyone help me out?
