Starswirl the Bearded is a powerful wielder of magic, who for many years has safeguarded the realm of Equestria. From treating different nations, teaching the princesses, to facing horrible magical creatures of the land, he has seen it all. However, on one fateful day, his life would change. During a raid against trappers he discovered three small children and he knew of what they are. Knowing the risk they would bring he knew what dangers they possessed to Equestria.
Yet, how could he do his duty for his country when they were the last of their kind?

I actually love that reasoning.
I can imagine them growing up trying to hide what they are and feeling conflicted whenever they did something Siren-like and it felt right versus doing things the pony way and it is completely unnatural for them. And with nature being stronger than nurture in this case, they eventually grow to become the threat everypony know them to be. Starswirl being conflicted between duty and family, compromises to banish them to a world where magic is non-existent (at the time) and conflict was natural to allow his surrogate family to live without them being able to cause mass extinction.
I hope that Storm Rage dies a horrifying, agonizing death.
