I'm not going to give this a rating, but I'd find a way to transition to a flashback without having the whole thing in italics. Heck, I don't think it even needs it. If you transfer the beginning to where things start to heat up, the story would flow smoothly. I was getting annoyed just looking at all the words in italics when it wasn't necessary.
That's my take though. Take it as you will.

Actually...thank you for that input. I figured the italic font wouldn't be necessary, but have had experience in previous work where the lack of italic to make the separation obvious led to confusion. it was an extra precaution. So thank you for your comment
