"Man," Rainbow Dash said with tired disdain as she pushed her laptop away and splayed herself across the table in a pose of abject boredom. "Another lame anime season. I can't find a single new show I wanna watch."
Trixie raised an eyebrow. "I didn't know you were a weeb."
"I'm not a weeb!" Rainbow retorted hotly, lifting her head to glare at Trixie. "Just because somebody watches anime doesn't make them a weeb."
"She's right," Sunset said, not looking up from her phone. "Watching anime doesn't make you a weeb. Being super annoying about it makes you a weeb." She spared Rainbow a quick glance. "Nothing at all, really? I mean you say that every season, then you end up finding something."
"Not this time," Rainbow said boredly. "It's the same old crap." She gestured vaguely as she scrolled down a website. "Fourth season of something I never watched the first season of, another idol project thing, another idol project thing, some actiony thing that maybe I'll watch two episodes of but probably won't stick with, two more everyday high school life shows like Fluttershy and Rarity like, some new basketball anime I'll probably try but after the rugby one last season I'm burned out on sports anime for a while, another isekai—"
"Of course," Sunset snorted.
"—and the usual mix of dumb gag shows and leftovers," Rainbow finished. "Like I said, total snorefest."
Trixie's brow furrowed. "E-sex?"
"Isekai," Sunset corrected. "It's..." She trailed off, pursing her lips.
"It's this type of show they're making way too many of lately," Rainbow said with a disgusted note in her voice. "It's like, total wish fulfillment garbage for actual weebs. Some random loser dies in a stupid accident or something and gets reborn in a fantasy world like from an RPG, only now instead of being a total loser, he's got all kinds of sweet magic and weapons and skills and stuff, and he starts gathering a party that's mostly made of up girls. Usually there'll be one with huge tits, one who acts like she's mad at him half the time but she's really in love with him, that one's little sister who's also in love with him, and a couple other random girls and some kind of super magical pet." She shook her head. "They're all exactly like that and they all totally suck."
Trixie blinked. "That's...weird," she said.
"Yeah, it is," Sunset said. "Nobody knows where the whole isekai genre came from, really, but everybody kind of wants it to just go away."
"But they just keep makin' more of 'em," Rainbow said tiredly. She sighed. "Ah well, at least I've still got Black Clover and Boruto to fall back on. Maybe I'll try to get back into One Piece...ugh, that's such a chore..."
"You could always try watching an older show you haven't watched yet," Sunset said.
Rainbow snorted. "Puh-lease. If I started randomly geeking out over some show everybody was over and done with years ago, I'd look super lame!"
"So?" Sunset countered. "Who cares? TV shows and movies and books don't have expiration dates. There'll always be somebody new discovering them."
"I guess," Rainbow said. "HEY!" she shouted as Trixie suddenly yoinked her laptop away and began studying it intently. "Give that back!"
"In a second," Trixie said. "I just want to see what all the drama's about." Her eyes scanned the open page, and her lips pursed. "Some of these titles are...really long. And unpronouncable."
"Yeah, well, that site lists the titles entirely in Japanese," Rainbow said. "Not that the titles are usually any better in English if they're super long."
"Ugh, light novel titles," Sunset grumbled. "God, I hate light novel titles."
Trixie raised an eyebrow. "What in the?" She began reading aloud, rather dramatically: "There's a rumor about a mysterious phenomenon called 'puberty syndrome.' For example, Sakuta Azusagawa is a high school student who suddenly sees a bunny girl appear in front of him. The girl is actually a girl named Mai Sakurajima, who is Sakuta's upperclassman who is also a famous actress who has gone on hiatus from the entertainment industry. For some reason, the people around Mai cannot see her bunny-girl figure. Sakuta sets out to solve this mystery, and as he spends time with Mai, he learns her secret feelings. Other heroines who have 'puberty syndrome' start to appear in front of Sakuta."
Dead silence fell.
"Okay, what the actual fuck?" Sunset said with a bemused snort.
"Betcha anything Twilight'll be watching that one," Rainbow said. "Or Fluttershy."
"Oh, this must be one of those e-suck thingies," Trixie said. "Lonely thirty-seven-year-old Satoru Mikami is stuck in a dead-end job, unhappy with his mundane life, but after dying at the hands of a robber, he awakens to a fresh start in a fantasy realm...as a slime monster! As he acclimates to his goopy new existence, his exploits with the other monsters set off a chain of events that will change his new world forever!"
"Eeeeyup," Rainbow said. "That's textbook isekai. Well, except the slime monster part. That's...a little different?"
"That actually sounds like a funny gimmick," Sunset said. "Maybe it's poking fun at the whole isekai thing?"
"Maybe."
"Here's one," Trixie said. "A typical morning. The usual music. Their normal lives. The peace these seven girls experience will suddenly be destroyed. By the living dead... zombies. A reality that they never wanted a part of, an amazing and terrifying zombie world. They all share one wish: 'We want to live.' These girls will struggle through this saga, in order to achieve a miracle."
"Wow," Sunset drawled. "That sounds...so completely unoriginal."
"Yeah," Rainbow said. "I'm so over zombies. The promo art for that one doesn't really sell it either."
Trixie continued perusing the page, then ultimately slid Rainbow's laptop back over, shaking her head. "I have...no idea what any of that is," she said disdainfully, "but it absolutely doesn't look like anything I'd be remotely interested in. Of course, I have better things to do with my time than watching anime in the first place."
Her phone chose that exact moment to go off.
Sunset and Rainbow smirked at her, eyebrows raised.
Trixie blushed. "That...that's different, okay?" She fumbled her phone out of her pocket.
"Funny, I don't remember your ringtone being that," Sunset mused as Trixie answered. With a nervous, flustered glance at the other two girls, Trixie turned away and spoke into the phone in a small, embarrassed voice.
"Hi Mommy."
Rainbow and Sunset exploded in howling laughter.
If only Crunchyroll wasn't having problems for the last 4 FUCKING MONTHS!!!!!
I can very much think of a cool one.
It's weird, but amusing. And not as bad as the initial premise makes it sound. It's surprisingly serious, yet at the same time what-the-fucky.
Say what you will about the show, but the intro is kickass.
Uh. I suspect people would be more judgemental if you've never experienced the timeless classics.
Start with Ranma 1/2 and The Slayers and Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star and Space Battleship Yamato (the 2199 remakes are fine if you want to skip the originals) and Captain Harlock and Sailor Moon and Ghost in the Shell/GitS SAC and K-On! and Ah! My Goddess!.
I'm actually enthusiastic for S2 of Yuri on Ice. The yaoi is more cute and amusing than uncomfortable or anything like that, and the animation is pure artistry. Hard to believe it's not rotoscoped.
The slime one is different enough to be entertaining.
Overlord is actually really good, and Accel World had it's own charm.
Best Pony/Human has good taste!
I've actually heard good things about that one...
....okay, all humor aside, that ringtone is awesome.
I've got a suggestion, the EQG cast actually try making their own anime series.
I was kind of waiting for them to point out that Sunset is actually from another world who because of jumping worlds she now has a whole group of attractive girls surrounding her, or the fact that a portal to a magical world is in front of the school, but a joke about Trixie actually being into attack on titan is good too.

Try this. (If you don't use Chrome, it's worth getting just for this purpose.) It makes Crunchy suck significantly less.
9309922
I'm Autistic and OCD I cant bear to change browsers.
Maybe for a continuation of this chapter, the girls can talk about their favorite animes and showing them off to the others? I think that at least one of the girls would enjoy "Jojo's Bizarre Adventure".
Hey! Konosuba is funny as fk!
It's like self-insert fanfic. But animated. And with boobs. And Japanese drama caused by the characters having communication issues. Seriously, would it kill them to speak more openly with each other instead of making those paranoid mental monologues?
Don't worry Rainbow! I know a wonderful anime set in a fantasy world that is not an isekai. An anime full of adventure, friendship, and magic, suitable for the whole family!
Goblin Slayer
animeclick.it/immagini/anime/Goblin_Slayer/cover/Goblin_Slayer-cover.jpg
... well, okay, maybe not the whole family, but I like it.
9309893
I use CR consistently with no problems. It might be your browser/app/Internet connection. ProTip: For best results, use one of their gaming console apps. Web Crunchy is always going to suck.
9309911
You do realize you're giving advice to a fictional character in a fanfic right now, do you not?
9309941
Again I worked 4 months ago.
Hey Rainbow don't diss zombieland saga. Its surprisingly good, I don't even like Idol shows but I still enjoy zombieland saga. Although bad cg stage shows make me sad.
wonder how they'd react to Goblin Slayer.
You need some ointment for that burn, Trixie?
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, or as I call it "Slime Reincarnation", is one of my favorite shows this season. It actually breaks a good bit from the normal isekai formula.
9309917
9309918
Slime is pretty good so far, yeah. Less burn, more build. And the Ep 8 twist really caught me off guard.
9309937
Konosuba is fcking awesome, yes.
She could always watch Jojo. That seems right up her alley.
9309921
To be fair, the other girls aren't trying and failing to hide massive crushes on Sunset, who is somehow too stupid to notice. That's a big strike against this counting as isekai.
Holy shit, they have GOT to watch Made in Abyss. I'd kill to watch them react to that.
binge Ghibli, Dashie - or watch some GKIDS movies
maybe some Black Lagoon or VA-11 HALL-A
That time I got Reincarnated as a Slime's not bad. I like to focus on the guy's city building because that's an angle you don't see often. Last year when anime was looking lame I went and watched Kinnikuman.
9309925
I didn't say change. I primarily use Firefox, but I also have Chrome for things that work better in it. (Primarily Youtube and Crunchyroll, but some other video sites too.)
Edit: Also, yeah, it was around 4 months ago (I think) that they changed their player. Again.
9310015
For me "Change" Includes Use
My first thought when I read that was, "That sounds eerily like the Displaced crap that goes on here."
Anyway, I had a ball reading this chapter. Especially the ending. Oh, Trixie...
So, who wants to tell Sunset that she's in a reverse isekai?
I think Rainbow might enjoy Slime if she gave it a chance, just for how goofy the characters can get. Not to mention the fight scenes are suitably epic and awesome, and unlike other Isekai the stakes are treated seriously.
9309937
...is it odd I could see Twilight and Sunset really enjoying Goblin Slayer once they got past the first episode?
Slime is not bad, but I've also read the manga, and it seems that it fell into the OverPowered trap. Still, I have some hope for the teaching arc it is currently on.
My fav one is currently Re:Zero, because it is one of the few Isekai where the protagonist actually struggles, instead of being far too powerful at any time of what I have read so far. But I must admit that the protagonist is a bit insufferable at times.
9310003
If you like city building, I'd recommend you the manga Genjitsu Shugi Yuusha no Oukoku Saikenki. Pretty focused on city and state building, without falling too much in the OP trap.
9309918
It is, but I think they used it more as a setup crutch than and for a few one off jokes. They could take out the whole "displaced gamer" thing, and it would still good. After a few episodes, that barely gets mentioned. In season 3, it was almost like it never started out that way.
9309967
I'm watching Konosuba for the 3rd time, and I almost never watch anything more than once.
Instead of making all these imitators, I wish they'd make more seasons of the better ones, but the industry is very competitive and overflowing with supply (labor and materials). Overall that's good for the consumer. You just have to be willing to sift through it all, but it's a 1st world problems thing.
Oh man, Dash'll regret not watching old anime if she ever finds Cowboy Bebop or Full Metal Alchemist.
What, no mention of JJBA: Golden WInd?
9310063
Not at all. I mean, Goblin Slayer is smart, polite with women, loyal to his friends, and brave while being humble, I think I see why they would like him. Plus, he doesn't let his past or someone else decide his fate, something they can somewhat relate.
hm, this season pretty good for me. like, bunny girl senpai, gridman, gs, kimi ni naru... even jojo is watchable.
Shiet, remember when isekai was Shoujo? MK Rayearth, Escaflowne, 12 Kingdoms, etc.
Suggestion: have the girls talk about this video. I don't even play League of Legends and I was hooked instantly.
While I do agree with Rainbow Dash when it comes to most anime, I do wonder what her option is on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures, Symphogear, and the Fate series.
I recognized every show they mentioned. I heard Bunny Girl-senpai was pretty good actually. Mother's Basement made a neat video on it. And that zombie idol show has Mamoru Miyano in it acting like Hououin Kyouma or something
Ahhh anime, I've been binge watching a whole bunch recently, Full Metal Alchemist, Jojo, One Piece, etc, good shit all around.
Nice chap.
I'm more upset with Funimation leaving it's partnership with Crunchyroll, it meant VRV lost a huge chunk of it's anime content. the premium membership giveaways some youtube channels had were great for binging some of the great old anime. Now most of the things I want to watch are gone and the rest are almost all sub only. I find it hard to immerse myself in a show when I spend 70% of it reading small words below what is actually happening.
Only anime I watch:
https://m.9309941
Shaddup. I cuddle up under my wife's feathery wing every night when she's done with her dream rounds and we watch a few episodes together.
[Insert laughter] Way to roast the most common/overused/"popular" genres of the anime industry. But I'm kind of surprised you didn't bring up that Happy Derby? anime, the one with the horse girls...... Huh wonder how the girls will react if they learned that there was a anime show about horse girls.
Also I would recommend the original Saint Seiya anime to Rainbow Dash.
And you're right about the Isekai genre which a part of me says we can blame on insert fanfiction/fan comics. I mean on this site alone there are a bunch of human in Equestria stories plus the Displaced works. And on FF.net it's even worst. A prime example of is the Naruto crossover section in which IT'S Naruto that is being Isekai to another world. Dear god are there a ton of them and they pretty much start the same.
That said a couple of them are decent, if you can overlook the occasional fan service that is. Overlord is a good one, in my opinion anyway with it being about a human turned into an elder lich that rules over an evil lair and it's denizens, all while trying to live up to the role/imagine of being an evil overlord.
And the slime is so far doing okay in my book and I'm looking forward to when they get to the ending moments of the war with the orcs. If you've read the manga you would know why.
And sadly for Rainbow Dash's and many others I doubt we'll see an end to the Isekai genre, along with idols projects. They are all pretty much shot in the dark but they do gain an audience to some degree and that's enough for anime producers.
Although I am surprised you didn't take about the franchises like Gundam and Digimon that keep getting different incarnations of them being made or that the Pokemon anime has been following Ash for the last 20+ years.
Quick questions, are you going to have the girls talk about doujinshi at some point? Or is that something you wouldn't touch with a Gundam's beam saber?
Or are you thinking about talking about another aspect of the anime industry that annoys you or that you want to take a few jabs at? Like the harem genre? The shipping wars? Or the Power of Friendship?
That last would be an interesting topic for the girls to talk about.
Two of my favorites are No Game No Life and Assassination Classroom. The former has the unfortunate issue of ending before the story's conclusion, and the latter... just got pulled from Crunchyroll after my latest rewatch.
Also yes, Konosuba and Re:Zero were excellent, though I've heard the Slime one... well, it doesn't develop the main character beyond "normal guy" (at least until way too late), fails to justify the reincarnation (just wishing he couldn't die somehow triggers a celestial computer? Eh?), leaves the guy without any starting goals (not even cliché ones), and gives a big exposition dump instead of building the world organically.
I suppose it's possible that this lackluster quality is fixed past the pilot, but said beginning puts this show on the fast track to worst professional isekai ever.
9310181
Uhhh..no.
9310212
You get used to subs. Also, FunimationNow is only $6/month and has all that content VRV no longer has.
9310236
Generally speaking, I only write this kind of chapter of JGT when I specifically have something on my mind. If I have something on my mind and want to use the girls as a mouthpiece for it, I write. Otherwise, I don't. This means if it's on somebody else's mind and they want me to write it to see what I think, it's probably not going to happen, because it's something I'm probably not really thinking about/interested in/have anything to say about.
9310065
Ah, thanks :3
Hnngg... I really don't want to be that one guy... But I have to. For the sake of Heaven's Door.
9310309
Rainbow Dash has just good enough taste to not watch JoJo.
It's kind of ironic how Sunset's life is basically a reverse-Isekai if you think about it lol. I'm actually watching the Slime one and it's a fun story, I'm surprised Goblin Slayer wasn't brought up at the moment, I also am watching Zombieland Saga it's...kind of different and for some reason it keeps me coming back lol. But yeah I get what Rainbow was like in this chapter there is a bit too much that's all the same although I do watch older stuff when I can't find anything good.
