Also if you ever have to use a shovel as a weapon, never ever use the flat. It slows down the swing, and doesn't focus the concussive force. Use the blades edge.

depends on how you're using the shovel itself. You can actually give someone a concussion if you strike with the right surface of it, and with proper practice you can mitigate the issue of drag. Also, an edge doesn't "focus concussive force". Concussive force would mean contusions as wounds, not lacerations. Focusing concussive force would be like using an ice pick: You get puncture wounds instead of contusions because you're focusing striking force onto a smaller area, often to a sharp point.
