The Equestrian experiment is failing.

Fewer than forty years after Commander Hurricane, Princess Platinum, and Chancellor Puddinghead united the three pony tribes into one nation, that nation stands on the brink of ruin. The Triumvirate that once led Equestria forward lies broken in the aftermath of war and civil strife, leaving only the unicorn queen, Platinum III, to rule from Everfree alone. The Cirran Legion, once the backbone of Equestria's military, has been dissolved, and with it, any semblance of control over the countryside has withered away.

To the south, along the fringes of equine civilization and settled lands, an old soldier flies alone. Once, she protected these ponies; once, she led them, standing shoulder to shoulder with the unicorn queen and the earth pony chancellor. But now she is just another sword in the wilderness, a leaf adrift on the winds of fate, as the twilight of her years fades away.

Because the Equestrian experiment is failing. And Commander Typhoon, daughter of the legendary Hurricane, is dead.

A Price of Loyalty story.

With the three pony tribes uniting, forming Equestria and its government, it seemed that pony kind was finally able to create a nation strong enough to withstand the the test of time. Yet as the wealthy say: everything has its price.

With the newborn nation’s economic system failling, and its leaders unprepared to pay the price necessary to solve the slump, Equestria was plunged into a massive crisis. As inflation runs unchecked and food shortages threaten the population, the threats of poverty and famine become all the more real. Tempers flare, riots erupt across the nation, soon transforming into full-fledged revolts are crushing Equestria’s once bright promise of peace and prosperity.

With its continued existence in jeopardy, merchants gather in the city of Lubuck, hoping to find a way to save their threatened positions were about to change the face of the nation for centuries to come.

Their solution: a confederation.

In the year 4 A.o.E, Equestria witnessed the birth of the Horseatic League. With the sudden shift of power the leading class of Equestria was faced with a situation none of them were prepared for. A new power forming at the edges of the realm, heralding the dawn of a new era, the weakened crown had to cope with a blow to its prestige. Plots were formed and poisons were brewed as the birth of a nation was washed in a river of blood. Yet the year 4 A.o.E was to be remembered as the birth date of the Horseatic League, a league, that was destined to change the face of the world. After all, steel may win battles, but Gold Wins Wars.

Before 'Everfree' was a forest, it was Equestria's thriving capital.

In the city's earliest days, fresh off saving Equestria from an evil that threatened to steal the sun itself, Princess Platinum faces a new challenge. She and her undercover coltfriend, Celestia's apprentice Mortal Coil, set their sights on what seems like a much easier, safer, and happier task: giving the Princess a choice other than the seven horrible suitors her parents picked out for her.

Unfortunately for them, when it comes to the politics of a freshly founded Equestria, the romance of a princess is anything but simple, or safe, or happy.

Two thousand years after Cirra's fall, the records kept by the censors offer an illuminating glimpse into what life was like for the pegasi and griffons in those ancient times. I have translated the personal records kept by one such censor, Aureus Primus, taken during the height of Cirran power in the Diodan continent. It has been twenty years since the fall of the Cirran Empire, and Commander Hurricane has led the pegasus pony tribe into a comfortable role in accordance with the Tri-Pony Compact. But a supernatural blizzard without end brings forth the suppressed hatreds that have festered among the three tribes, and the resulting famine threatens to eradicate all; earth pony, unicorn, and pegasus alike. With a bloody war looming on the horizon and the fate of their ponies at stake, the three tribes must find a way to survive together, or they will assuredly die alone.

Sequel to "Of Skies Long Forgotten." Reading of that story is not absolutely necessary to understand what is going on, but it is strongly recommended for you to understand the references.
