In the long-forgotten past, the solar princess welcomed a black unicorn into Canterlot Castle. He was an artist who quickly found a place in the hearts of all who met him. His name, likened to the colour of his coat, was Midnight.

Nearly a millennium later, the discovery of an unusual book leads Twilight to Canterlot. And directly into a whirlwind of events where the secrets of the past are finally brought to light...even as all is eclipsed in madness...

When a freak solar event threatens Ponyville and Princess Celestia is nowhere to be found, Twilight desperately casts the only spell that she thinks will help: a spell that transforms her into a vampire. Forced to deal with the side effects, Twilight relies on her vampirical side as she ventures into a life-threatening situation for the sake of the princess, Ponyville, and quite possibly all of Equestria.

Twilight Sparkle has been betrayed by Celestia, all her friends brutally killed in front of her eyes after the young unicorn woke up one morning with wings. Celestia had realized that Twilight had been chosen by the Elements of Harmony to replace Luna and herself as the leading force of Equestria, and correctly surmised that the other Elements would have followed shortly after and become a united force the current princesses couldn’t hope to defeat if they chose to contest their position for the throne. Even though Twilight doesn't want to acknowledge her destiny as Equestria's next chosen ruler, the new alicorn cannot let the tyrants she has now seen Celestia and Luna really are remain in power.
Armed with only the Elements of Harmony and her burning rage, Twilight sets out to avenge her friends and free Equestria from Celestia and Luna's tyranny.
The fate of Equestria, as well as the balance of this entire universe, hinges on Twilight's success.

Twilight is ecstatic with her new journal and the prospect of writing her life's adventures, eager to begin. However, one unfortunate event leads to a spiral of terrible luck and decisions, culminating in a horrific tragedy. Twilight fails to cope with her changed life, and as she loses her grip on reality, the journal records it all. Her pain, her fall into madness, and the horrible lengths she will go to in an effort to reclaim what has been lost.

Humanized Twilight/Tyrant!Celestia.

Celestia leaves to deal with a foreign crisis, giving her sister a chance to rule alone and become more attached to the modern world. She calls on Twilight Sparkle to advise Luna, hoping her student will be able to draw Luna out of her shell. With two major threats to Equestria already defeated in the past year, it seems like the perfect time to let Luna gain some confidence and experience in the modern world. After all, what are the chances of a third disaster occurring?

Twilight finds herself enthralled by Princess Luna and everything she represents. As Celestia's pride and joy, Twilight struggles to repress these feelings. But an old and well-known evil surfaces again at the worst time. Can Twilight fight off the spectres of the past?

Luna is on her way to visit Celestia, but hears her squealing for someone to 'stop!'

She walks in on Twilight on top of a red-faced Celestia, and the two of them react like guilty teenagers. Just what the buck is going on here?!

When the Princesses recieve word of cultists in the place where ponies originated from, they call on the mysterious psychic Hood to help them. Fearing the worst, they send Twilight and her friends, along with Hood and his own, to attempt to stop this cult.

But with the ponies who wield the Elements of Harmony gone from Equestria, who will protect it?

This is my first fic, hope you guys like it. The first few chapters are, admittedly, pretty slow, but it speeds up later on. Any suggestions are welcome!
