Uh... where is this set?
Because I'm not that clear on what Spike is here? ^^;;

The first thing to hit him was the smell:

If you mean how old Spike is, he'd be around 18, since that's how old most students are when they enter College. If you mean where, it's an alternate universe school I just lazily called Canterlot University, where Spike happens to be a freshman film student.

That sentence about the smell was supposed to emphasize how strong the smell was. Like, "even with a cold, he could still smell it cause it was so strong". But apparently, if you get a cold, you can't even detect really strong odors. I don't get colds often because, similarly to Spike in this story, I hate the common cold with an uncanny passion, and quite literally avoid it like the plague at all costs. All this to say, that one is my bad.

About the smell, well you could point that out explicitly in the text.

I've had colds and even covid where i can still somewhat detect strong smells but yes all smells are like.... averaged out?
Like the curve is flatttened when it comes to intensity. Strength is partially guesswork
