I've always enjoyed a more stream-of-consciousness writing style. Funny that you mentioned Catch 22, because the peculiar, constant interior dialog and not being able to tell what parts of the narrator's thoughts Lyra can or can't hear is definitely giving me that Washington Irving vibe. Or was it Irving Washington?
