Seemed obvious to me that was the joke, it's meta because it refers to another fix setting as fictional in this one. I did like how the story shows their are even ponies who don't get the "adult blank flanks are newfoals" message. The mention Equestria is a welfare state, have to say yes it is, but in a good way because it's almost completely balanced. Equestria would be hard to emigrate to for the simple fact is is a balanced welfare state, new citizens would be scrutinized to make sure the didn't upset the balance. The balance is the only reason it works.

That's sadly the truth of Hollywood, they don't think the writer actually has any purpose, they think the director and the producer and actors and special effects are what win the audiences.
