An Appeal to Pity. The author couldn't make Helper Soul sympathetic because his flaws make him unsympathetic, so he decided to create a sob story for Soul. The sob story pretends that empathy and kindness doesn't exist.
The lesson I got from Friendship is Failure is that Friendship fails because some people are self-centered, hateful jackasses who blame everyone but themselves for their mostly self-inflicted failures. Some people use their trauma as an excuse for their destructive and unhealthy lifestyle. People trying to help them should just give up because they refuse to improve.
