Time. It is the force that drives our entire existence. It is uncaring, unyielding, and unstoppable. Occasionally the waves of time take somepony we love with them, and we wish for nothing more than to turn back the clock to save them. The hardest lesson to learn is when to let go. {WARNING DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS! There are usually spoilers.}

Beautiful. I especially like Luna being characterized as slightly awkward. All in all another excellent ChaoticHarmony piece.
This is exactly something that Celestia would do to protect her subjects. This kind of false hope would be very painful to future generations. Once again, great characterization, excellent plot, and another great sadfic. Great job

Yay, it's up! Now, time to give it a thorough read-through...
This is good. Very good.
Beautiful and Sad
Once again, you made me tear up. Another great story

ONE DAY!
That was deep and very sad. Great story

It's a paradox - Shining's death is a Fixed Point In Time, which cannot be altered by anyone aware of it downstream of it. Because, if it never happened, then they would never have known that it needed to be prevented. Time is a cruel mistress and, when I read stories like this, I think that I understand why The Doctor is such a broken, cynical spirit.
It's just that in the end, when everything died, the fear of empty hopes will also die.
Another great tale, and I found only one mistake. You didn't capitalize Sparkle's name one time.
It's also nice to get a view into the motivations of Starswirl himself. He's too often just referred as an ancient student of Celestia.
Time is the only thing that is fair to everyone because no one has 25 hours to live each day. But how to use that time is up to you to decide, some people do good work, some people just spend all day playing useless games like cuphead games. I think this is a wasteful use of time.
