Chapter 21: Zelda

Author's Note:

This chapter's featured card: Blackwing Armor Master

Synchro Monster Level: 7 ATK: 2500 DEF: 1500 Attribute: DARK Type: Winged Beast

1 "Blackwing" Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

This card cannot be destroyed by battle, and you take no Battle Damage from battles involving this card. If this card attacks a monster, you can place 1 Wedge Counter on that monster at the end of the Damage Step (max. 1). You can remove all Wedge Counters from your opponent's monsters to reduce the ATK and DEF of each monster that had a Wedge Counter to 0, until the End Phase.

Mark and Ryan were having a late lunch when Ryan interrupted him.

“Sir,” he said. “I think you should see this.”

“Yes?”

“Remember that dark haired girl from days before? The one with the odd haircut.”

“Vaguely.” Ryan handed him his duel pad.

After a while, Mark looked upon her picture with interest. No, he thought. It couldn’t be. While her hair and clothing style didn’t seem the least bit familiar, it took another photo of a similar looking woman with wavy brown hair that Ryan had pulled up who seemed to share Zelda’s eyes, lips and facial contours.

“We finally meet again,” said Mark to himself.

Cont. from Lucas and Pinkie Pie vs. Scott and Zelda

Zelda’s Turn: Zelda activates the effect of Blackwing Armor Master (ATK: 2500 DEF: 1500). By removing one Wedge counter from a monster, she can reduce its ATK to 0 choosing Pinkie Pie’s Worm Zero (ATK: 5000 DEF: 0) (ATK: 5000 -> 0). Zelda attacks Worm Zero with Blackwing – Armor Master.

Lucas and Pinkie Pie’s Life Points: 4200 -> 1700

Zelda then attacks Lucas and Pinkie Pie directly with Number 199: Lunar Wolf Spirit (ATK: 2200 DEF: 1300).

Lucas and Pinkie Pie’s Life Points: 1700 -> 0

Scott and Zelda win.

Pinkie Pie laughed her normal childlike, high-pitched laugh.

“Wow Zelda,” she said in between giggles. “You are such a great duelist. I have no idea how you do it so well!”

“Yeah,” said Zelda a little guiltily. “Me neither.”

“Oh come on, what’s your secret? Come on, come on, tell me!”

“Yes,” broke a voice. “Do tell.”

Scott, Zelda, Lucas, and Pinkie Pie turned around to see Ryan and Mark standing there.

“You,” spat Zelda.

“Come now, no need to be hostile. We just want to have a little duel and be on our way.”

“Cut the shit,” she said. “I know of your kind. The last thing you goons want is to ‘just have a little duel.’”

“Yes, you do know of our kind. All too well, I might add… Izzy.”

Zelda couldn’t help but sound shocked. She quickly tried to mask her surprise. However, Scott and Pinkie could tell by her initial look of worry that what he was saying was truthful.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Zelda lied.

“Perhaps I should try a new title. How about: Ms. Queen No. 1?”

“Zelda,” Scott sputtered. “You…”

“No, I’m not.” Mark scoffed at her feigning innocence.

“Yes, it’s true. Zelda was actually our first Ms. Queen in our Vegas program.”

Pinkie Pie couldn’t help but feel shocked that her friend was in league with them.

“And that Number that she has: that wolf; It seems like it came back to serve its master.”

She began to tear up. Zelda couldn’t bear it anymore. “No Pinkie. I’m not one of them… not anymore.”

Pinkie Pie didn’t care what she had to say. She ran away crying. Lucas chased after her. Zelda ran to catch them too, but she felt something tug on her arm. She looked behind and saw Mark with his arm outstretched. His duel disk had a blue beamy rope connected on the end while the other end was wrapped around Zelda’s wrist. Ryan had also roped Scott as well.

“You fucking bastards!” she yelled. “I gave that life up long ago.”

“But it was still a life that you led,” said Mark.

Scott then remembered their conversation before they left for Equestria.

“Now, remember Zelda, when we get there, you might feel a little uncomfortable with the inhabitants there.”

“Come on Scott. You act like we’re going to a whole ‘nother planet or something. I highly doubt wherever we’re going is going to be a horrible shock.”

“If you say so.”

Is that why she took everything in so easily? he thought.

“Zelda,” said Scott with a feeling of betrayal in his voice. “Just who are you?”

Zelda caved in. “My real name is Izzy Heathers. I joined the Vegas Bureau during its infancy when I was 15 after my family was taken from me.” Her sad, soft voice was then altered to a harsh tone directed at Mark. “And then I left these pigs after I became fed up with their treacherous hunting methods.”

“And you were a pig along with the rest of us,” said Mark with a smile.

“Shut up!” yelled Scott. Mark and Ryan listened intently. “All I know is that you two are my enemies. I don’t care right now where Zelda’s loyalties lie, but if she wants to fight you, then she’s an ally of mine.”

“Fine, whatever,” growled Mark. “We’ll teach those who dare try and trespass against us.”

Mark’s duel anchor began glowing black. Zelda tried to shake the anchor off, but to no avail. Zelda’s deck case began glowing, and a purple energy shot out of it. The beam then turned into a physical form of Number 199: Lunar Wolf Spirit, this surprised everyone except Zelda.

“Let her go now!” it shouted.

“What’s happening?” asked Scott. Number 199: Lunar Wolf Spirit answered. “When Izzy ran from the Vegas Bureau, the Bureau issued a bounty on her head. Now he’s come to claim it.”

“What do you mean?”

“The black beam. A person who loses while that’s wrapped around their wrist loses their life as well.”

Scott was now shocked beyond measure. “You bastards…”

“Now, that kind of attitude won’t get anyone anywhere. If you want to have any chance of saving your traitorous whore, you’ll have to duel us, and beat us.”

“I’m going to shove those words right down your throat!” yelled Zelda unsheathing her duel disk.

“Nobody treats my friends that way,” said Scott unsheathing his duel disk. Mark and Ryan then activated their duel disks. The four duelists drew five cards from their hands as Number 199: Lunar Wolf Spirit watched on.

“DUEL!” they all cried.

“What is this?” asked Zelda. “You never used this deck before.”

“Isn’t it great?” asked Mark. “It’s a little something given to me by Ryan here. And let me guess: you still use your Blackwings, don’t you?”

Zelda scowled.

“You’ll never change Zelda. Once in Vegas, always in Vegas.”

“Fuck you!” she cried. “I’ll show you how much I haven’t changed.”

Zelda’s Turn: Zelda activates Heavy Storm, destroying all spell and trap cards on the field. Next, she activates Graceful Charity, drawing 3 cards and discarding 2. Blade Blaster (ATK: 3300 DEF: 2200). Zelda then activates Blackwing – Boreas the Sharp’s effect from her graveyard, removing it from play to target one Blackwing monster, choosing Blackwing – Elphin the Raven. Zelda attacks T.G. Blade Buster with Blackwing – Elphin the Raven. With Blackwing – Boreas the Sharp’s effect, Blackwing – Elphin the Raven isn’t destroyed in battle, Zelda doesn’t take battle damage from the attack, and the monster it attacks is destroyed at the end of damage calculation. Mark activates T.G. Blade Blaster’s effect. By removing a T.G. monster in his graveyard from play, he can remove T.G. Blade Blaster from play. Zelda attacks Ryan and Mark directly with Blackwing – Elphin the Raven.

“Insolent bitch,” said Mark. “We gave you a home when you lost yours, and you could have gotten it all back, but instead you spat in our faces.”

“What I lost wasn’t worth the lives that I took,” responded Zelda.

“Stupid,” scoffed Mark.

“Ryan?” Ryan nodded in obedience.

Ryan’s Turn: During the standby phase, T.G. Blade Blaster is special summoned from the banished zone. Ryan activates Change of Heart, taking control of Blackwing – Elphin the Raven. Zelda was still seething with hatred.

“Zelda,” called Scott. “You don’t have to go this alone. I’m here for you. I care for you.”

“Scott,” emotionlessly replied Zelda. “You don’t have to do anything for me. I dragged you into this, and I’m sure as hell not going to let them throw you into Hell with me.”

“If it keeps you safe,” said Scott, “It’s a price I’ll gladly pay.”

Scott activates the effect of Number 171: Grand Harmonious Pipe Organ. By detaching one xyz material, Number 171: Grand Harmonious Pipe Organ’s ATK raises by 100 times the rank of every xyz monster on the field (excluding its own) (6) (100 x 6 = 600, ATK: 3400 -> 4000). Mark activates T.G. Blade Blaster’s effect again, removing a T.G. monster in his graveyard from play and remove T.G. Blade Blaster from play. Scott attacks Number 149: Alien Tentacles. Zelda lay motionless on the floor, apathetic to her fate. She could have had her family back, but then she couldn’t accept the price she had to pay. She was making new friends, but then they found out who she really was. If there was any satisfaction with going this way, at least she would die with nothing to lose.

“Zelda!” called a voice that was faint in her state of unconsciousness.

She slowly opened her eyes to see and feel a pink fuzzy animal repeatedly call her name while nudging her with her muzzle.

“Pinkie?” weakly asked Zelda.

“Zelda!” Pinkie cried in jubilation.

“You!” called Mark. “Get away from her. Have you forgotten what she has done?”

“No, I haven’t” said Pinkie, defiantly sticking up for her friend. “But I pinkie-promised Lucas that I’d give my friend a chance to let her explain herself, just like Rainbow Dash did with Ryan.”

“She’s filled his head with lies, just like she will to you.”

Pinkie couldn’t hold back her anger.

“Oooh, that smarts!” she screamed.

Before she could charge, a hand rested on her shoulder, stopping her.

“Thank you Pinkie,” said Zelda in a much more energetic voice, “but this is my battle, and I intend on finishing it!”

Zelda’s Turn: Zelda normal summons another Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind. Then, she activates the effect of Blackwing – Bora the Spear from her hand, special summoning it if she controls a Blackwing monster (ATK: 1700 DEF: 800). Zelda tunes Blackwing – Bora the Spear with Blackwing – Gale the Whirlwind to synchro summon Blackwing Armor Master (ATK: 2500 DEF: 1500). Next, Zelda activates Double Attack, discarding Blackwing - Aurora the Northern Lights to allow Blackwing Armor Master to attack twice this turn.

Zelda attacks Number 160: Cannon Android – Rocket Rocky. Mark attempts to activate Negate Attack, but Scott activates Trap Jammer, negating and destroying Negate Attack. The attack goes through. Blackwing Armor Master can’t be destroyed in battle and Zelda takes no battle damage. At the end of the damage step, Zelda can place a Wedge counter on the monster she attacked. By removing a Wedge counter from a monster its ATK is reduced to 0 (ATK: 3000 -> 0). Zelda attacks Number 160: Cannon Android – Rocket Rocky with Blackwing Armor Master again.

Ryan and Mark’s Life Points: 2500 -> 0

Scott and Zelda win.

Zelda and Scott were free from Mark and Ryan’s control. As soon as they could run, they took off with Pinkie Pie and Zelda. By the time, Mark got up however, they were far from catchable. Ryan was looking at his D-Pad tablet.

“Scott,” he recited aloud so that Mark could hear. “Deck: Vylon. Attribute: LIGHT. General Types: Fairy/Machine. Play Style: Monsters’ effects revolve around the usage of equip cards. I would do a report for Zelda, but seeing as she’s still in our system with the same stats as we just saw, I found it was unnecessary to do so.”

“Good boy,” said Mark.

Mark then looked out over the horizon.

One day, thought Mark. I will beat you. And I will destroy you.

Once Zelda, Scott, Pinkie Pie, and Lucas were far enough away to consider themselves safe, Pinkie confronted Zelda, who sat up against a tree to catch her breath.

“Okey dokey lokey,” she said suspiciously. “Lucas convinced me to let you have your say. All that I ask is that you promise to be 100%, 20/20, full-on, unabashedy, unquestionably, undoubtedly honest.”

“I promise.”

“Pinkie promise?”

Zelda looked unsure of herself here. Zelda looked over Pinkie, and saw Lucas crossing an X over his heart and placing his fist on his eye, and nodded, signaling her to repeat him. Zelda did the motions verbatim. Pinkie then sat down on the ground in front of Zelda, looking her straight in the eye. Zelda had nothing to fear at this point. She was a wanted woman who just came 300 life points away from death, and lying to Pinkie Pie given what she learned today would not only be unnecessary, but incredibly stupid. Zelda took a long inhale, and began to recount her tragic life.

“I grew up around Boulder, Colorado; a mountain town; not from your world, Scott. While the place is a wondrous town of commerce, culture, and education, my family could enjoy neither. I grew up with my younger brother, baby sister, jobless mother, and my bastard father. My mother was unemployed up until I was around 5, and between my dad’s dead end job at a local sports store, and his drinking and gambling problems, I never saw him. I figured it was better this way. With what little we had, I made the best of it.

“I would treat myself at a local ice cream shop whenever I could scrape up enough money doing various things, including teaching myself to play piano and keyboard, or helping out at the local library. Along with being paid a miniscule but satisfactory pay, I was allowed to take books out of the library free of charge. Among my favorite novels, I personally loved reading books on computers. History books, instruction manuals, anatomies, I’d find all that I could. This is what served as an education for me, but it was better than nothing. I made very little performing on Pearl St., but I still got to experience the culture there. I couldn’t buy as much as the many tourists that came and went, but when I could spend anything, I did so with a smile on my face.

“But one day the smiles ended for good. One particular night, when I was 15 my dad in a drunken stupor bet our entire rent money on a pair of 4’s. Needless to say, he made a terrible bet. In his rage, he took a can of gasoline, locked all doors from the inside, splashed the gas in every corner of the house, took a match, and lit the place up. If I had not been previously alerted and woken by my dad’s loud presence, I might not have lived to tell you what happened. To think I was saved by my dad. Of all fucking people. I knew dad was a very volatile person when he’s drunk, so I previously hid the covers over my head and hoped that he thought I was asleep.

“Obviously, he didn’t care. Once I saw the smoke, I tried to open the door, but burned my hands on the handle. With no other options, I took a baseball that I found under my bed and broke my window with it. I jumped out, ignoring the glass that cut at my feet, and ran to my nearest neighbor to use their phone. But it was too late. Our little piss-assed home couldn’t have burned faster if it had been made out of paper and celluloid. By the time I was a couple hundred feet down the street, the house had burned down to the ground, taking my mom, my dad, and my two siblings. I never cried so hard in my life.”

Everyone, including Scott and Pinkie Pie were heartbroken. Pinkie Pie could tell that there wasn’t an ounce of deceit in her voice. Scott knew Zelda longer than anyone, but he couldn’t even believe that despite such a tragic life, that she was able to keep it in so well.

“When the firemen arrived,” continued Zelda. “A strange man in a white suit told me to come with him. He only told me his first name: Cyrus. All I could remember about him was his blue hair. Anyway, he invited me to enlist in the Vegas Bureau. At first, I was concerned why he wanted someone like me of such a young age, but he said that children my age are easily conditioned into learning new things, such as the dueling, hand-to-hand combat, technology expertise, and weapons practices we’d learn in our initial training. He promised a roof over my head, 3 square meals, a bed, clothing, all basic necessities that were practically luxuries in my youth and adolescence. I accepted. What I didn’t know was that I opened my own door to Hell.

“Upon completion of my training, I was enlisted as the first Queen because of my quick reflexes and intuition, and my previously read knowledge on my computers also made me essential in managing the various technologies that we used: flat-space, D-Pads, you name it. I was given a Blackwing deck based off of a personality test I was given so I could use it to its max potential. Boy, did I ever.

“When I was told before my first official Numbers hunt that the hunting of Numbers could lead me to save my family, I was more than willing to charge in and find them all. I never knew how much pain I must have inflicted to reclaim my life, but I was beyond the point of caring. I figured as long as the ends justified the means, that my life would sort out just fine. It wasn’t until my 7th Numbers hunt that I claimed Number 199 from this world where talking dogs coexisted with humans or something like that. Anyways, after I had claimed the card, I began having violent nightmares, each one involving me experiencing firsthand the horrors I helped inflict on those people. When I thought I had enough, Number 199 talked to me. She told me that she knew what I must do, and that was all.

“One day, we were going to begin a Numbers hunt in your world, Scott, Lucas. Once they turned the portal on, I dispatched several of my fellow 10’s, which are standard agents in the Bureau. Before I could escape through the portal, Mark, who was a Jack at the time, tried to block my way. Before he could apprehend me, Number 199 leaped into my defense, incapacitating Mark and telling me to go without her. With nothing but my deck and the clothes on my back, I leapt into the portal. I didn’t know if they would follow me, or how close they were, but I made sure that they couldn’t. I cut my hair, changed my clothing style, and adopted a new identity: Zelda Crowley. With my technical prowess and the keyboarding skills I taught myself in my youth, I auditioned and was accepted to attend Hearthome City Musical Academy, where I met Scott, my first roommate. And that’s that. Everything else that could be considered eventful has been my arrival in Equestria up until now.”

Everyone had so many questions, but they were still trying to form words with their mouths agape as they were.

“When the Vegas Bureau arrived here,” said Scott, “why didn’t you tell us about them.”

“I’m sorry,” said Zelda on the verge of tears. “I thought that if they saw me, they’d kill me. I tried to remain a wallflower so they wouldn’t hurt me. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

She couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. Pinkie Pie, who had already been crying streams, leapt onto Zelda and hugged her comfortingly. Scott came up and joined them.

“Thank you,” said Zelda sniffling. “You don’t know how long I’ve wanted a moment like this.”

“Aw, don’t sweat it,” said Pinkie Pie. “Sometimes friends need a good cry to get rid of all their nasty-nasties.”

Zelda giggled at her exuberant energy.

“We need to tell the others,” said Scott on a serious note.

“Right,” agreed Lucas. “If these Number hunters are after Zelda’s head, we should do our best to protect her.”

“Please, no,” protested Zelda. “I’ve already lost so much. I can’t bear to lose anymore.”

“Please Zelda,” said Scott, kneeling to meet Zelda’s level, “listen. We have friends here who will lose just as much as you will if you fight this thing alone. We’re their enemies too, and we have to stick out for one another.”

“I’ll say!” shouted Pinkie Pie as she put her hoof on Scott’s hand. “All for one, and one for all!”

Lucas went and put his hand on Pinkie Pie’s hoof, to which she put her other hoof on Lucas’ hand. Fully rallied by the support of her undying friends, she finally stood up and forcefully, but gladly, put her hand on Pinkie Pie’s hoof. They all lifted their hands toward the sky. Zelda watched as Pinkie, Scott, and Lucas, fully pumped ran back to Ponyville to relay the message. Zelda stood and watched her friends run.

Thank you Pinkie Pie, she thought. I owe you one.
