Part 3: Seizing the Day - Chapter 16: Eli's Father

Author's Note:

This chapter's featured card: Koa'ki Meiru Valafar

Effect Monster Level: 8 ATK: 3000 DEF: 2100 Attribute: FIRE Type: Fiend

During each of your End Phases, destroy this card unless you send 1 "Iron Core of Koa'ki Meiru" from your hand to the Graveyard. You can Tribute Summon this monster by Tributing 1 "Koa'ki Meiru" monster. This card cannot be destroyed by the effects of Trap Cards. During battle between this attacking card and a Defense Position monster whose DEF is lower than the ATK of this card, inflict the difference as Battle Damage to your opponent.

It was morning in Ponyville and it was just as hustling and bustling as any other day. There were duels going all over the town and, needless to say, it couldn’t be any livelier. Alex and Eli were doing well against the next opponents that they were facing.

Cont. from Alex and Eli vs. Matilda and Cranky Doodle Donkey

Final Round: Eli vs. Cranky Doodle Donkey

Eli’s Turn: Eli activates Monster Reborn, special summoning Koa’ki Meiru Crusader from his graveyard (ATK: 1900 DEF: 1300). Eli tributes Koa’ki Meiru Crusader to summon Koa’ki Meiru Valafar (ATK: 3000 DEF: 2100). Then Eli activates the effect of Koa’ki Meiru Maximus from his hand, special summoning it by banishing an Iron Core of Koa’ki Meiru from his hand (ATK: 3000 DEF: 2500).

Eli then activates Koa’ki Meiru Maximus’ second effect, destroying one card his opponent controls, choosing one of Cranky Doodle Donkey’s face down cards. Eli attacks Cranky Doodle Donkey’s Iron Chain Dragon (ATK: 2500 DEF: 1300) with Koa’ki Meiru Valafar, but Cranky Doodle Donkey activates Magic Cylinder, negating the attack and inflicting damage equal to the attacking monster’s ATK. Eli activates Damage Diet from his graveyard, banishing it to halve any effect damage that he takes.

Eli’s Life Points: 1600 -> 100

Eli then attacks Iron Chain Dragon with Koa’ki Meiru Maximus.

Cranky Doodle Donkey’s Life Points: 300 -> 0

Eli wins the round.

Alex and Eli win the match.

Eli picked up the donkey’s wig that fell off of him from the last attack. He then walked up to him and put it back on his head.

“You two kids are really good,” Cranky Doodle Donkey grunted.

“Thanks,” said Eli. “You ain’t too bad yourself.”

“Well, we still have the rest of the day to get some wins, so I won’t hold you two up any longer.”

“Bye, you two,” said Matilda, the female donkey accompanying him.

____________________________________

Alex and Eli made a quick stop at the Sugarcube Corner to get some breakfast. Mr. and Mrs. Cake had their handful with not only running the shop, but tending to their new infants, Pound Cake and Pumpkin Cake, making them unable to participate in the tournament. They each got lemon and poppy seed scones and bottles of milk to wash it down.

While inside, they met Sammy and Spike who went in to get some doughnuts. The four of them sat on a bench in the warm sun and had their breakfast. As Eli raised the bottle to his lips, Alex couldn’t help but notice a leather bracelet that Eli was wearing. It was a dark brown leather braid that snugly wrapped around his wrist. On the top of the wrist sat a medium sized opaque oval stone colored like lapis lazuli.

“Hey, I never noticed that bracelet on you before,” said Alex.

Eli put down his bottle and rolled his sleeves up so Alex could get a better look at it. “Woah. It’s pretty,” marveled Alex.

“The hell’s that supposed to mean?” asked Alex, offended that his bracelet was called “pretty.”

“That stone, I mean. It’s color is… it really matches the leather.”

“It was given to me by my father.”

“I see.”

“By the way,” said Sammy, “you never mentioned much about your father. What was he like?”

“My dad? He was great. Like I told you, he was the one that saved Equestria from darkness long ago. He came back when I was an infant, and throughout my childhood, he told me all about his adventures, and how we were supposed to go to Equestria together. However, he was denied the chance to return, and he ended up becoming so manic-depressive about it over the next 30 years that he got himself committed.”

“Shit.”

“Four years later, he died a broken and desperate man. Six after that, and here I am.”

“Wait,” said Alex. “30 plus 4 plus 6. That’s 40 years. You’re telling me that you’re 40 years old?”

“41, actually.”

Spike who was too busy scarfing donuts to join into the conversation spit out chunks of dough out upon hearing Eli’s age.

“What?” “And you’re telling me that a 41 year old was trying to hit on me?” asked Sammy.

Alex turned his head and looked at Eli with dead eyes. “You were hitting on my sister?”

“What? No, when she was teaching me how to duel a couple of days ago, I accidentally put my hand on hers when she was teaching me xyz summoning and overlaying and shit. That’s all. I swear on my mother’s- no, my father’s grave that that’s all that happened.”

Alex took a troubled sigh of relief, still unsure whether to believe that was really the case.

“Listen you,” said Alex sternly, “just stay away from my sister.”

“Okay, okay,” defended Eli. “Sweet crunchy Christ.”

“How are you 41?” asked Spike who just finished swallowing.

“You look about the same age as Alex and Sammy, and they’re about 28 or so.”

“It must be the stone that my dad gave me. I always remembered him at the same young age when he had the bracelet, so it must have been given to him from Equestria. Plus you have to wonder, how old are your Princesses?”

“Uhh, I dunno. They must be at least a thousand years old, being that it was Princess Celestia who banished Nightmare Moon in the moon more than one thousand years ago.”

“Okay, but do they look 1000?”

“No, I guess not.”

“Then we must have similar powers than, don’t we.”

Sammy couldn’t help but me more intrigued by Eli’s stories. Despite her initial thought that she would be completely turned off by his age, she couldn’t fight the fact that this only heightened her intrigue for him.

“But before your dad got all… insane,” Sammy began to ask, “how was your dad?”

“Like I said, he was a great dad. He was really supportive and he’s the main reason that I can adapt to things such as your game and this land really quickly. He’s also the one who trained me into a fighter so I could save Equestria the second time around. I mean, he was a sergeant in ‘Nam.”

“‘Nam?” asked Alex.

“You know, Vietnam.”

Still nothing. Then he got it.

“Oh right, different worlds. Doy. It was this big ass war that my people fought in years ago. We didn’t win, but it certainly made everyone who lived through it lose their collective shit, but I digress. The point is, he was just a very brave man in his prime and I still miss him today. I guess this stone is the best way for me to remember him by.”

“I’m sorry about that,” said Sammy.

“Eh, what can you do?” Eli shrugged. “By the way what time is it?”

They didn’t need an answer, as the clock tower in the town rung, prompting everyone to look at its face. It read 9:00.

“Holy shit!” said Eli. He then shoved his whole scone in his mouth and chugged every last drop of drop of his milk. Alex gingerly watched him as he gently wrapped his scone in a napkin, closed his bottle of milk, and put both items in his bag.

“Jesus Alex, we need to get going,” said Eli as he made his way through the street. “We got more guys to beat, and I really want to stick my foot in those Numbers hunters’ asses, those sons of bitches!”

He continued rambling as his voice became less audible.

“Yeah, he does that when he gets excited sometimes,” said Alex slightly embarrassed. Sammy giggled a little.

Alex turned to face her. “You’re not seriously attracted to him, are you Sammy?”

Sammy then maintained her composure. “No. No, of course not.”

Alex wasn’t too sure by her answer, but he knew Sammy was a strong independent woman, and he shouldn’t get in the way of any feelings that she might feel in a person. It kind of made him feel a little guilty for trying to keep Eli away from Sammy, even if he was kind of messed up in the head.

“Well, good luck to you anyways,” said Alex.

“You too,” said Sammy.

“Bye Alex,” called Spike.

Alex waved and ran after Eli. Sammy and Spike decided to run their separate way as well.
