"Hang on a second," Rainbow Dash said, breaking up the brief squabble that had broken out across the table through volume and force of personality. "Why do we all have to agree on everything? Can't we, like, each do our own parts and glue 'em together?"

Rarity, as usual, spoke out against the idea. "We are not making a... a collage!"

Twilight Sparkle held up a hoof. "No, I think she's got the right idea." Rarity looked shocked, but Twilight continued. "Rainbow Dash, what's your favorite part of Equestria?"

"Duh! The sky," Dash replied, rolling over on her cloud chair.

"Then you can be in charge of the sky on our new world. Fluttershy can handle the animals, and Applejack can handle the plants."

"Begging yer pardon, Twilight," Applejack cut in, "but I mainly know about farming." She paused, looking surprised. "A lot about farming. You been putting stuff in my head again?"

Twilight shook her head. "I think it's part of becoming a... a god. What about the rest of you?"

Dash looked thoughtful. "Huh. I do know a lot more about the sky and weather and stuff. Did you know you can set the weather up so it works by itself? Like in the Everfree?"

"I know all sorts of interesting things about animals," Fluttershy said, animated by the thought of her favorite subject. "There are more than a million kinds of bugs in Equestria!" She cowered again, adding, "And some of them are kind of mean."

"How are you on plants?" Twilight asked. "Do you think you can handle plants and animals?" Fluttershy considered, then nodded timidly. "Okay. Rarity, how do you feel about handling the earth?"

Rarity looked confused and offended. "You want me to work with dirt?"

"No, the earth. Rocks and gems and mountains and volcanoes. The foundation of the world."

Rarity considered this briefly. "I admit, I have a talent for gems, but if you're talking about foundations, I think that would be Applejack's department." Twilight looked over at the farm pony, who considered the matter as well.

"I reckon I could give it a go... if'n you wouldn't mind giving me some advice now and again." She looked to Rarity, who nodded.

Twilight considered. "We'll need someone to handle the water... rivers, oceans, that sort of thing. Rainbow Dash, think you can squeeze that in? It's sort of a weather thing."

"Yeah, sure, whatever," Dash replied. "But Fluttershy has to do the fish and stuff."

Rarity looked pensive. "What is there for me to do? I can't demonstrate haute couture before we've even made any people."

"Then you can make the people," Twilight suggested, only to be interrupted on two fronts simultaneously.

"Now hold on a second, Twilight, I ain't lettin' her fill our world with a bunch of upper-crust socialites!—"

"—Hey, how come Rarity gets to make the people? I totally had some cool ideas!"

Twilight raised her hooves in surrender. "All right, we'll work on the people together. Rarity..." She paused, thought carefully. She was having trouble thinking of a contribution the unicorn could make, and from the look of it, Rarity was having the same problem.

"What about you, sugarcube?" Applejack asked Twilight. "What're you gonna do?"

"Oh, I thought I'd do the basic framework. The shape of the world, how gravity works, what the sun and moon do, that sort of thing." Twilight looked over at Pinkie Pie. "And Pinkie can, uh... Pinkie?"

"Yes, Twilight?" the two-dimensional shape that looked like a cut-out portrait of the earth pony with simple shades and darkened borders wondered.

"...never mind. You can be in charge of all the weirdness in the world."

"Woo hoo!" Pinkie declared, raising her flattened hooves.

"Oh! Ideaaaa!" Rarity suddenly sang out. "I'm already giving advice to Applejack; how about I help all of you with your ideas as well?"

"What?" Rainbow Dash protested. "No way I'm letting you near the sky. You'll style the clouds. Clouds don't need styling!"

"Um, maybe you could help me make the animals... pretty. If you don't mind." Fluttershy offered her best supportive smile, which looked a lot like her timid smile.

"You can help me out, Rarity!" Pinkie Pie offered. "How much lava do you think goes into a lava cake?"

Twilight forced a smile, looking to Rarity, who looked like she was beginning to have second thoughts. "Well! That's certainly generous of you, Rarity. Moving right along..." She gestured, and a three-dimensional drawing appeared in the center of the table, near the blob of worldstuff. "I'm thinking of going with a spherical world. It's self-contained, but offers avenue for expansion—"

"Wait, won't stuff just fall off the bottom?" Applejack asked.

"No, 'down' is at the center of the sphere, so everything falls inward," Twilight replied.

"How do you expand something like that?" Rainbow Dash added. "Wouldn't you want it to be flat so you could stick more bits on the sides?"

"Some of the worlds I looked at in the catalog are joined to other worlds," Twilight said, flipping her copy of the book open and indicating an illustration. "Each of the lights in the sky is its own sun, very far away, and ponies can travel from one to the other by using specially modified... well, they're something like fireworks and something like hot air balloons."

"Well, why don't we just make something like that to start, then?"

"I was thinking, instead of us making absolutely everything, why don't we find other gods who've made their own worlds and let our ponies meet their ponies?" Twilight paused, then looked to the Caretaker. "We can do that, can't we?"

With the agreement of all involved, two worlds can be joined, the Caretaker responded. It is difficult to sever such a bond, however, even if the gods agree. I note that such a bond exists between your world and Equestria.

"So our people could visit Equestria someday?" Pinkie said. "Ooo, we could throw them a Welcome To Our World party! Y'know, we should really come up with a good name for it."

"Well, how're they gonna get here? Equestria ain't no fancy ball with stuff stuck to it," Applejack asked.

Twilight admitted, "I'm not sure. But other worlds in the book are joined by special gates or passages. We'll figure something out."

"Ooo! Ooo!" Pinkie raised a hoof and waved it, the motion causing her hoof to blur and leave lines hanging in the air. "Can we have a donut world? I want a donut world!"

"No, Pinkie," Twilight sighed. She'd seen toroidal worlds in the book, and technically there was nothing wrong with them by themselves, but trying to extend 'up' in such a way that other worlds could be meaningfully connected would be a headache. As for the idea of a world in rectilinear space actually shaped like a donut...

"How about a layer cake world? We could have a world here, and a world here, and a world here..." Pinkie began stacking her hooves atop each other, which was especially disturbing once she got up to five.

"No, Pinkie."

"Oh, a cupcake world! People could live on the icing and dig their way down to the cake underneath. They'd have to be careful of the cream filling, though—"

"Pinkie!" Twilight barked.

"Aww, you're no fun," Pinkie pouted, folding her (many) forelegs over her chest.

"I must admit," Rarity said, "I'm a bit uncertain about this... 'sphere' idea. I saw a rather charming ring design in the book—"

"Why do we even need ground?" Rainbow Dash said, perking up. "Just make the sky go on forever. We give everyone wings—"

Applejack glared at Dash. "I must be hearing things, because if you think for one second I'm gonna let you get away with not having good, honest dirt—"

"Girls!" Twilight yelled, glaring around the table. Fluttershy, despite being the only pony not to contribute to the chaos, hid her eyes behind her forehooves. "Deciding this is my job, and I'm going to do it." She paused, then sighed. "If you all think a sphere is a bad idea..."

"All I want is sky, and lots of it," Dash said.

"And ground," Applejack added.

"And cupcakes!" Pinkie chimed.

"Pinkie, we need ponies to make cupcakes," Twilight groaned.

"Ooo, right, we have to invent the universe first," Pinkie agreed. Twilight looked oddly at her.

"Pinkie Pie. Can you come up with one idea—just one! That makes any sort of sense?"

Pinkie Pie adopted an intense look of concentration, appearing to tap her hoof to her chin. In her current state, it looked fascinatingly surreal, as if one portrait were being switched out for another faster than even godly eyes could see.

"How about..." Pinkie said. "We make a world that's a big ship. Big enough to have land and sea and sky inside. And when the people are ready, we can show them how to sail the ship into other worlds... so they never have to leave home to go exploring!"

The ponies blinked.

"That sounds... pretty cool, actually," Rainbow Dash said.

"It'd have to be an awfully big ship. And what would it sail in?" Applejack pondered.

"Well, there is a sort of space between worlds," Twilight murmured. "It could travel through that. Somehow."

"Oh my! A vessel eternally sailing the sea of nothingness... so romantic!" Rarity enthused, eyes wide.

"As long as there's room for animals, um, I don't mind," Fluttershy said.

Twilight grabbed her quill, began sketching in the air, replacing the spherical design. "If it's going to travel, it should have a front and a back..."

"Make it a big tube, with all the stuff on the inside!" Pinkie suggested.

"What about the sky?" Rainbow Dash demanded.

"A big hollow tube, silly! There's plenty of room for sky."

"How will the ponies get out to meet other ponies?" Applejack wondered. Twilight suddenly looked excited, beginning to sketch more vigorously.

"We can divide it into wedges," she said. "Imagine we take a ring-shaped slice of it, like this. If we divide the ring into six pieces, we can make every other piece land, and the pieces in between can be... well, a sort of clear wall, like glass. We make down out and up in, and when you look up you can look through the glass and see out."

"But there'll be nothing to see!" Dash protested.

"There'll be other worlds to see," Twilight said. "We'll arrange things so that they're... well, like stars. And the ponies in our world can steer it to whichever one they want to visit."

"That doesn't answer how they'll get out," Applejack pointed out.

"Duh!" Pinkie answered. "They'll just make a tunnel down! And they can have smaller boats to fly from our world to the other world and back!"

"It sounds way too complicated," Dash said. "Wouldn't it be simpler to put everything on the outside?"

"It'd make down... complicated," Twilight said. She'd seen some rather elegant formulas of gravity and centrifugal force that she was already toying with using.

"And making the world a ship wouldn't? Ponies'd fall over sideways every time the thing started or stopped! And where you gonna put the sails, huh?"

"It'd be more like a firework," Pinkie chimed in. "With one end going whoosh!"

"You want to make the world a big firework?" Rainbow replied, looking aghast.

"No, silly! Then it'd explode!"

A brief silence fell over the table, broken by Applejack. "Well. That certainly is a... Pinkie Pie idea."

"It wouldn't re-ca-pit-u-late Equestria," Rainbow Dash admitted, looking at Twilight.

"I do think we can do better than some sort of tube," Rarity chimed in.

Twilight glanced at Fluttershy, who'd fallen quiet. "What do you think?"

"Well, um, I—" Fluttershy began.

"Fluttershy," Rarity snapped, fixing her gaze on the pegasus, who flinched, then drew a deep breath.

"Well, you haven't considered what you're going to do about a sun and a moon, up and down are going to get very confusing near the center, and I don't think we'll be able to explain how to make everything work to the people without going down and doing it all ourselves, and I think it'd be much more exciting if they could work that out without having to ask us to do every little thing. Not to mention, if the glass cracks or breaks, it'd be a huge problem for everyone." She paused. "But, um, whatever you want to do is fine."

Twilight let her head sink to the table again, covering her eyes with her forelegs. Rainbow Dash's bright idea hadn't actually solved anything.

Just go with my suggestion!
It works, makes sense, and gives lots of room!

Say...
How will they interact with their people?
Not at all?
Just barely?
Somewhat?
A lot?
through prophets?
Books?
Walking amongst them?

Well, this is certainly a new idea. I will definitely be following this one.

Silly, silly Twilight. Doesn't she know that the only way to make a world is to put it on the back of four elephants, who each stand on a giant turtle?

And can I visit Pinkie's parts of the world? Pleeeeeeease?

.....wow talk about your philosophical debate! Read it all and I'll say it right here-you need a cynical creation. The idea of a creature meeting it's creators, then blowing them offs by being uninterested just seems like a funny first go at intelligence! Now then...being serious....just go with a planet near equestria. That way you can still have the debate of creating a new plannet but they can still check in with equestria (I'll a little upset over them not saying goodbye to spike and a few others...or did they? That part was a little unclear for me...also....bring the CMC to equestria!!! As minor gods!!! Ohh! Ohhhhhhhhhhh! Bring in a bunch of background characters later on and make them minor gods!!!!! Yes! The MOTHER BUCKIN DERPY GODDESS AND HER DAUGHTER DINKY!!!) ....so yeah...can't wait for a planet to be made! Moar!!! ;D

27114

How to contact them depends on the god:

Applejack: Plant trees and do good farming. Her voice will be the soft, brown earth.
Fluttershy: Love animals. You'll hear her soft voice in the purr of a cat, in the soft sursurations of a bunny, or in the roar of a lion.
Pinkie Pie: Do something that has never been done before. She'll respond in the splash of paint, the barefoot walk across a piano keyboard, or the crash of twelve different perfumes.
Rainbow Dash: Race! She speaks through the roar of the crowd, through the endless striving of competition.
Rarity: Create new order. She'll respond in the quiet etude, in the still life, or in the beauty of new garments.
Twilight: Hers are the words found in deep study, in constant science or mathematics.
Derpy: Just bake a muffin.

this is... interesting..

Very cool, Im liking this story a lot! Nothing wrong with it as far as I read.

This story is pretty interesting. Can't wait to see more.

Good ole' fashioned sphere, but there's a ring around it.

27129

But what does the turtle stand on? Or is it just infinite turtles all the way down?

27199

Turtles do not need to stand on anything, they swim.

Wow, just Wow! They became gods huh, nice! As for the planet a sphere makes the most sense but with not one but two rings, maybe more (just an idea). As for responsibilities the mane6 should represent a metaphysical concept just like their elements or other things like life, death, time, and space. Finally minor gods in the form of friends in family could be really helpful for small things (Now that I think about it this reminds me more and more of the Roman-Greak Pantheon).

looks like Pinky Pie is a fan of Arthur C. Clarke... (read the Rama series)

I am thoroughly enjoying this

My only gripe is with this last chapter; it started with the question of what to do about the structure of their world, and it ended with pretty much the same question. The result is that it feels a little like no progress was made. :fluttercry:

27224
Then I'm one of the 1%
I'd be a Wisp

27396 well you would move faster when in spirit form.

you couldn't very well lift anything though

/sleep

27470
I'd be a freakin' god.
I could do anything.
My hair is now a bird.
Argument INVALID.

as soon as i read pinkies job i thought of this:

teacher: "well student, arent you supossed to have your homework?"
student: "i did but the goddess pinkie pie changed it into a cow"
teacher: "well thats the worst excuse ive ever hea-"

teacher is cut off as a note flashes into being infront of her. it reads: 'sorry, my bad -pinkie pie'

teacher: "oh..."

me: "lmfao"

27535

...and Pinkie Pie would do it, too!

A good blend of plot advancement and humor. I hope you know how this universe is going to turn out, because I haven't the slightest clue. It's a good thing the rest is being delegated, especially since having Rarity as an oversight committee should minimize unpleasant surprises.

♫♥I look forward to reading what happens next in your story♥♪

Excellent! Maybe they can have a world thats a bit removed from the rest of the universe in some way like Gallifrey from Doctor Who. Or else a world that exists in a sort of pocket dimension that is sub-divided into numerous mini-worlds, realms and dimensions (kind of like a rip-off of kingdom hearts). Or a semi-living world inhabited by all sorts of weird and fantastic beings drifting endlessly through space (like the Discworld).I suppose it all depends on how much change they are allowed to make after the initial moulding. Also I think that there should be a group concensus on anything they choose to create, even for things that fall within one of the group's member's specialist areas. Additionally it should probably take them a bit to iron out the details (Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was a world - in the Bible it took god a good six).

27396>>27224 99% of people would choose a human-like form. 1%would choose something else. This is clearly bullshit.

The other 20%.

Twitches for a while. . . . . :pinkiecrazy:

Someone leans over and puts their ear to his head.
They actually hear something, as if the inside of his head contained more than it should physically. The sounds of everything possibly imagineable are heard, all before a screaming halt, transitioning to a crash into a wall, rises in cresendo, only to repeat itself every minute or so. :twilightoops:
They lean away before looking around the room.

Taking a deep breath, they spoke to the others; "I do believe that what he just read, broke his brain." :facehoof:
"I wouldn't be surprised." a second said. :duck:
"How do we fix him?" a third inquired. :ajbemused:
"I'm not sure." replied the first. :facehoof:
"We'll just have to wait for the author to continue the story." a forth spoke up. :fluttershyouch:
"Just great!" exclaimed an unenthusiastic fifth. :rainbowwild:

And finally, after all this time I've gotten around to catching up on this one, and I'm impressed. You deffinatly deserve all of your views and need to keep this up :pinkiehappy:

well cant wait to see what they use as people. also a ship world? it reminds me of the old creatures games.

i would like to say, that this is by far the most interesting premise of any story I've read..... well ever really

i see them going down there and interacting with their people, once they finally get everything else sorted that is, after all past experiences will always dictate or at least influence anything we do afterwards.

and last but not least, i would like to see what happens to spike, the cmc's and other friends and family. now that they're gods they're going to be able to visit them in their afterlife after all.

tldr: very epic story please keep up the great writing

The world could be a Möbius strip
That would be intreting.
You could just walk all over it's survace, no inside or outside, no "other" side. You would not even have to change direction.

Must say, I was suprised, that this story works so well. Keep up the good work!

So is this going to be continued? Or is the author on break or something?

As I said on my blog (and as I just updated the story status), this is on hold until my muse returns.

I really enjoyed this story- the idea is wonderfully original and I really like the character dynamic you've developed so far. There's just one thing, though- since everyone's lived essentially a full life now, I sort of expected some character development from their FiM time. Everypony still acts like whatever age they were in the TV show, though.

Ice

79890

Ah sorry didn't see your blog.

89905 Well you know w you mature with age? they mught have de-matured from their experiences.

hmmm..... if your looking for a muse there are several games you could play and some books to read. (books) eragon, dragonlance series, anythng by ray bradbury.

(games) kingdom hearts, kingdom hearts PT 2, spore,

(movies) lord of the rings, star wars, stargate, stargate atlantis, stargate sg-1, doctor who.

aaaannnndddddd.... thats about it.

They're doing it backwards.

Design the people--- or ponies--- FIRST. Then design a world suitable for them to live in.

Sweet Harmony, why did it take so long for me to find this?! I mean, I'm sad that the Mane Six had to...pass on for the premise to work, but I love this world building thing they've got going on. I certainly wouldn't want to be in their (horse)shoes, but at the same time, the prospect of creating part of a world in your own unique image is unimaginably dreamlike to me.

Sir, I beg of you: continue with this story! It's wonderful!

Hope your muse returns soon. In the meantime, though, I think your Pinkie Pie needs work. She's gotten a lot of development in season 2 and a lot of her content in this fic screams Chaos more than Laughter. While I feel that Laughter is a chaotic impulse, that doesn't make the two concepts the same.

MOAR I really want to see how they deal with this.

79890 How about a planes system similar to the old spyro games? Granted they've already got a universe setting, and are working on their homeworld, but that does leave some questions.

However, before I say anything, I'd like to suggest that you take a look at the TVTropes page dedicated to the concept of Building Your Own Fictional World.

Now that I've done that, the first step is obviously to decide upon the framework, as you are obviously aware. They want their peoples to have room to expand for sure, so that requires the universe to be capable of continuous expansion, which isn't very easy considering the nature of a universe and the physical laws involved.
However, in addition to that there is the question of the overall tone of the universe. Will it be more fantasy or more science-y? Will it be happy or sad? (That's actually pretty obvious, considering that this is the mane 6 we're talking about. They'll naturally go for a happier place.)

I would be interested in helping with the creative process, if that's what is missing from your muse, but better not to be forward or to impose. In the meantime, what are your views on such things as the old Spyro games and their planar-universe structure? Would those be separate universes or simply different worlds in the universe?

:raritywink: Mad props to you sir, i'm a sucker for creation fiction and adding ponies to the mix just makes it way more then 20% cooler. :rainbowdetermined2:

This is one of the most interesting fics I've read in a while. I was really getting into it but seems it's been put on hiatus until author inspiration returns from what I can tell which makes me a little sad. Hopefully it doesn't get abandoned.

579913
That was an interesting post. I didn't consider a planar-universe structure until you mentioned it. First impression about it was skeptical but I can see some elements becoming favourable. I'm not sure how well it would work.

712425 Well... it has some potential I suppose. Chief problem would be how to distinguish between a gate to another plane of that universe and another universe entirely. Twilight would also have a few foibles about that kind of system, seeing as how it would screw with her physics if she didn't plan carefully.

712448
Distinguishing gates between planes and universes was one issue I saw. Another on the same track would be going to a different universe through a gate would be somewhat less significant of an event given the fact that they can travel between planes so the experience may not seem so 'otherworldly', depending on how common interplanar travels are.

Another thing I thought about was do the Mane 6 have omnipresence? Are they going to have a 'home plane' and inhabit the others with jungles and semi-sentient beings for the 'home plane' inhabitants to explore or will they populate each plane with different beings and appear to each separately? (Meaning if they are omnipresent I assume they can be gods to separate planes simultaneously)

But what happens when (I'm assuming it would happen) interplanar travel is discovered by one/all of the separate planes? They would have to be multiple Gods to all races in different forms at the same time while their subjects of different planes may go to war over with each other for heresy even though it's technically not.

Or maybe I'm looking to far into this.....

712591 Or maybe that single concept is frinking awesome. Picture it.

- "The god of foundations is a dragon whose scales are more brilliant than the stars!"
- "The god that gave us order spun the earth with her endless arms with fur of light!"
Twilight: "Actually, I am a unicorn equine with a lavender coat, a collection of stars branded onto my flank, amethyst eyes, and a navy mane with a streak pink. Bish please?"

More likely though, a planar system is too vast for the six of them, and as planar systems are pan-omniverse... the spyro system COULD work, it would just be hard. Say... what if they had more than one world in their universe, and the gates or bridges or whatever medium you prefer was just jumps between the two? There HAS to be some way to make sense of it... what if they used a single world, but for kicks took it geometerically and fractured it so it's a see of floating continents and they continents are linked? Each continent could have cultural themes like discopunk, dungeonpunk, steampunk, etc. Or just put said continents in an endless sea and space above it, like how oil and water separate at different levels in a jar.

712724
So they have Stargates for travel between worlds?

Fractured world might work if there were no pegasi (Chance of happening: 0%) or if they have magitech to allow them to cross continents if there are no 'bridges', physical or otherwise. If they (continents of floating land) are completely separate from each other I can see mass segregation going of pegasi as well as some unicorns who can teleport (all if they have magitech for flight) and earth ponies, due to the fact earth ponies would not be able to move between continents without help from one of the other race of ponies.

To be honest though, I really just want an update! :raritydespair:

714906 It is uncertain exactly what race's we'll see, but yes it is likely that flight-capable species with sentience are probable. That does leave the groundwalkers with quite the disadvantage... what if while the continents were in a sea of clouds, the core of the fractured planet had an ocean? Also, ground walkers could be balanced by giving them technological affinity. airships would match things up with the flight capable ones relatively easily, and of course that would depend upon the size of the continents effected.

So... if they have aerotech that lets them move between continents, a sea below that will catch their fall and probably carry all kinds of life and act as a travel medium, and natural fliers, AND magic-users capable of hyper-continental translocation... you know depending on if the continents move or float in place, I could see halo light bridges connecting them.
