After a long time--she would be more precise but Twilight has lost track of time--she emerges from the dark of the library. Her candles are burnt down to nubs. There is no food left in her pantry and furthermore, no coffee. So she goes to seek both.

And finds the town changed. Or is it Twilight who has changed?

After the defeat of Tirek, Equestria is safe once more, but Luna can sense that her sister is troubled. When Celestia retreats to the starry realm of ascension in order to look upon the past, Luna joins her to discover what is bothering her.

The alicorns were killed in a merciless surprise attack. The pegasi were nearly wiped out also, unleashing wild weather upon Equestria. Earth ponies and unicorns had also suffered losses and struggled to survive in a world turned hostile. Who were their mysterious attackers and what were their motives? Could Equestrian civilization ever recover without their most powerful leaders?
