Celestia hopes to convince the parliament to ban duels, but it's an unpopular proposal. The last thing she needs is Luna stirring up trouble at the gala, so of course that's what happens.

I am writing this under an appreciable mental strain, for as of this night, I shall be no more...

Princess Celestia, ruler of all Equestria, is a giving creature. She gives of her time, her talents, her love. In return, Celestia asks for one night a year for herself, in which she remembers the terrible night when the world came to an end.
An exaggeration? Not to Celestia.
Cover art added January 2022.
Princess Celestia is, compared to the average pony, unimaginably old. With this age comes an extreme amount of experience, wisdom, and a healthy tolerance to pain. That, coupled with a protective instincts of a mother for her nation means that when Chrysalis managed to burn her, a very hard and uncompromising side of Celestia was revealed.
Of course, that doesn’t mean Celestia is ruthless. She only goes as far as she needs to.
Violence Tag: Violence spoken of after the fact.
Dark Tag: Themes of war, attacks on civilians, and slavery.
Being Princess of the Night is something Luna was born to do.
She hasn't always been perfect at it, and the role has required her to do things she doesn't like to think about, but she does them anyway. Better her than her sister, the wise, perfect, bright as noon-day-sun Celestia, in whom there is no darkness at all.
Or so Luna thinks, until the return of an ancient evil forces her to re-examine several of her assumptions. For Luna isn't the only one with a dark side.
The holidays are over on both sides of the mirror. Sunset Shimmer travels to Equestria with one more present… and something to say.

After you've tried to celebrate it enough times, a holiday might start to feel like nothing more than a group of traditions which all chose the same day to kick you. The bulk of Equestria may see the palace's annual gift-receiving ceremony as their chance to show how much they love their Solar princess, but Celestia mostly perceives it as something she has to get through without dying or actively longing for death. She's usually 50% successful, and most ceremonies end with her convinced it was the wrong half.
But maybe this year will be different.
One of them has to be.

Celestia has forgiven her sister for her crimes as Nightmare Moon. But Luna remains unreachable and distant as the moon itself. Celestia wants nothing more than to celebrate Hearth’s Warming with her little sister, and Twilight’s latest friendship report has given her an idea.

Celestia is up late doing paperwork when she hears something curious and asks her guest a pertinent question.
Bonus story I wrote after the scene popped into my head while planning out later chapters of first law.
References to death and violence, though none occurs.
