Thank Zod they remembered that Shatner is in his mid-80s and cast him as Granny's contemporary. Some people were speculating that he'd play Pa Apple against Felicia Day's character. Nope, her daddy.
And Unexpected Cup Cake. Who was born Cinnamon Swirl.
This is my favorite episode of the series. It actually made me cry.
I swear I thought I was gonna die and cry when I heard that song...no words.
Best episode of the Season (so far).
Possibly best episode of the series alongside A Royal Problem and Amending Fences for me.

Yep, I admit I cried. Absolutely my favorite episode of the series.

*Chiffon Swirl
4577945
Damn, heard it wrong. Thanks.

Same here, not afraid to say it got more then a few tears out of me.
*chuckles* I wonder how they will turn out
Man, that probably was as perfect as anyone could ask for. 10/10
Also, Dinky was present in one of those flashbacks. She's a freaking highlander.
Aren't apples and pears both core fruits? And I think the Australians are doing a good job at spoiling these episodes before the U.S. before airdates. Might be an alternative to not actually seeing these episodes. :P XD
I've said it before and I'll say it again, episodes like these are proof that the people who say the series has gotten worse don't know what they're talking about.
Seriously, this episode was downright brilliant! dear parents interactions were adorable and believable, the song touched my heart in a way I never thought it could. And I loved all the continuity nods, like how Mayor Mare has pink hair, something that was only made common knowledge in Ponyville Confidential.
I still say that hat was given to AJ by her dad.
I know one thing, a certain brony reactor is gonna flip his shit when he sees this episode.
But yeah, it was a great episode. I came in expecting nothing, and i was blown away by it.
It was sort of like Romeo and Juliet, but with a bit less violence and a much happier ending.
A classic of the series, to be sure.
Huh. Somehow I had no idea that that was Shatner until I got to the credits.
In any case, incredible episode... though now I find myself wondering how the Apples and Oranges are related. And just when ponies start speaking full sentences. Still, a fantastic answer to a question that's been hanging over our heads since the beginning.
Goddamnit, RIGHT IN THE FEELS!
I still want to know what happened to their parents...
This episode was just a masterpiece. Not to mention the emotions contained within. The writers of this particular episode deserve high praise and recognition.
Not gonna lie, I did cry a bit at the end.
So, the Apples, the Pears, and the Oranges are all part of the same family? I knew the Apple family tree had more branches than a cladogram, but are they related to every possible fruit harvester in Equestria?
All joking aside, this was a beautiful Romeo and Juliet story. One with a happy ending, no less! Bright Mac and Pear Butter are such a sweet couple, and it was a treat getting to know them. True, I didn't really detect a hard-and-fast moral (unless it was about Grand Pear allowing his daughter to choose who she loves without disowning her), but in an episode like this, I don't think it was necessary. It was just a beautiful bit of world-building that allowed us to appreciate the missing links in the Apple family tree.
And like that, every fic about AJ's parents and every fan theory went flying out the window
One word: d'aaw!
I legt cried. That was so beautiful.
(I also wanna point out how Grand Pear kinda looks like Cheese Sandwich.)

THAT WAS SHATNER? I had no idea. With a character introductio like that, we must see him more often.
4577967
Except she's got an entire closet full of them and chucks one in the garbage when it gets wrecked, so I doubt she got her hat from her dad
I've seen it and I'm still left with one question: WHERE THE F*$# ARE THEY!?!? (And if you they're dead, I'm Gunna Make You Prove It!)s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/84/17/47/841747addd53c32ee73ede6974683a98.jpg
It was a really sweet episode and I teared up a bit when Grand Pear forced his daughter to choose between the Pears and Apples, yet I admired how she stayed strong, only breaking down when her father left. So is Grand Pear going to become part of a recurring cast now? It would be nice to see him appear every so often, especially as he has moved back to Ponyville.
4577971
MUCH happier, they managed to have at least three kids before they (presumably)passed away.
4577988
ARGH! I forgot about that!
4577989
Um...I think it's been confirmed that they're dead. I believe I heard that the two shooting stars at the end of the Apple Family Reunion ep is a representation of their parents. And in Crusaders of the Lost Mark, AJ did say "If our parents were here, they would be so proud" implying that they might've died some time ago
But I'm with you and everyone else. If their parents are dead, what happened? I mean, the ep was so beautiful and got me crying. But what happened after????
Also, that tree at the end was so beautiful~
Well there goes that song 'Being apples to the core' Someone screwed up continuity with this.
So, William Shatner's the Peartriarch? :D
Definitely a lot more heartfelt than I thought it would. It's still a "Romeo and Juliet" story, but still...
Definitely a heartbreaker of an episode, in the best way. Still wish we'd actually gotten more info on what had happened to the happy couple other than a confirmed death by the show staff. Totally called shatner when gran pear first spoke. IDC where some people are in the series this is a must watch asap episode.
I enjoyed the episode very much, I was very shocked that the siblings are half pears, but thier parents love story is very Beautiful like a Romeo and Juliet story. So, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

As Jondor pointed out, I misheard, she was actually Chiffon Swirl.

Did you not know what I meant when I said: "And if you said they're dead, I'm gunna make you prove it!"
intotheopenfield.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/fist_cracking_02.jpg
And oh yeah, that tree scene at the end was pretty nice.
Mayor Mare should totally stay with the pink. <3
Man, that comment Granny Smith said "I should of told you about them sooner."
>Implying their kid's deaths
Ouch. They sure do skirt around that topic a lot. How many ways can you say "Our parents are dead" throughout all these episodes that mention the parents without saying outright the obvious? lol
Man, this episode was really sweet. Shame it was only 20mins long. Felt like they wanted to add so much more into it. Buttercup is one smexy mare. Cute episode, much sweets.
idk about anyone else, but the feels hit me hard on this one, and there were many ninjas in my room cutting onions, damn ninjas.....
*sniff*
The last time Grand Pear ever saw his daughter, he disowned her. She died, and he never got to reconcile.
That guilt and pain must have eaten away at him for years, until he realised he still has three grandchildren waiting in Ponyville, his last links to his deceased child. He had to come back, get to know them, before it was too late.
The feeeeeeeeeeels.
4577991 It would make sense in "Star Trek" terms, since John De Lancie (Discord) is an official secondary cast member.
4577941
Agreed. This episode is my personal favourite of the season so far. Maybe even overall, or at least among the top five.
Damnit, I'm actually tearing up. Shatner's delivery was so well-done.
William Shatner is Applejack's grandad!?!?!?!??!
Alright, that was brilliant. It was so sweet and soft throughout the entire episode. There was not a single gag or "Pinkie Pie" moment. They really respected this portion of Applejack's character. Yeah, they didn't go into how the parents perished, but they didn't need to. I was quite satisfied with the handling of this arc, especially for a kid's show where, unfortunately, they have to tip-toe around the place.
The Pears and Apples made such an impact on the lives of Ponyville and it was great how they demonstrated that. Though, I think Mayor Mare is too young to be in that scenario as (comic canon) she is about the age of Cheerilee. Perhaps Cheerilee is much older than we anticipated and thus it's a good thing she is not with Big Mac who would be half her age. But I digress.
I say this is truly one of the best of the series. This was no wasted opportunity, which made it all the sweeter. The wait for such an episode was damn worth it. Sure it was a Romeo and Juliet story, but one with a happy, less "teenage angst" ending. The wonder of how they died will still continue, but at least we know now that the families have moved on. I am very happy to have seen this and it's another notch in the "great Applejack episode" stick. 10/10 any lesser score would be foolish.
The intro to this episode is everything I imagined it to be
Seeing little kids talking with adult voices is kinda funny, but cute regardless.
That was a wonderful episode. So much history, and emotion... I hate to say it, but I think "The Perfect Pear" just knocked "A Royal Problem" off its perch as "best episode of season 7 so far".

I misheard it so badly I listened to it twice and I thought she said chiffon squirrel.
There we go, this is the MLP that made me a fan of the show. A good story that’s just trying to be a good story.
Nice to finally get some names and faces for AJ’s parents.

One of the character designers stated that AJ parents are dead. Also, Lauren from very beginning planned to make them deceased but she never outright said this because she thought that Hasbro never allows it.
And. Series got me when Grand Pear admit that he wrong. On the other side... It's his damn pride that cost him a daughter and almost cost him a chance to know his grandchildrens. But again, he did admit that he wrong.
Best love story I've ever heard, thats for sure
They have to mean 1/3 pear right? 1/3 apple 1/3 pie and 1/3 pear.
UNLESS PINKIE PIE WAS LYING
