Bonus Chapter: What's Worth Telling

Despite its appearances, a small, dark stone chamber befitting more a cell in a dungeon than anything else, a sense of peace fell into the room as a young dwarf sat idle. Completely relaxed in his stone chair, elbows lying on the arm rest as his fingers interlocked, he remained silent while he allowed his final words to soak in. It was all shattered in an instant however, a deceptively delicate looking fist smashing down on the table in front of him, causing the dwarf to jump with surprise. The powerful jolt tipped over the glass of wine he had been drinking, a meager gift to help loosen his lips and coax his memory.

“What is this nonsense?!” barked the one who had slaughtered the silent air around them. Her pretty face was marred by her infuriated expression while her short, black hair nearly bristled like a feral beast.

“Have I said something to offend you, Cassandra?” the dwarf asked coyly, his eyes unable to look away from the dents left on the wooden surface of the table. There was a great portion of his mind already imagining what it would be like if such power was directed to his face.

The question only provoked the ire of the woman more as her fingers dug into the side of the table, leaning closer toward the dwarf as she looked likely to spit fire at any moment. “You know damn well what you've said, Varric!” the Seeker snapped. “Another world, talking horses and a Magister?! Do you think I'm a fool? To accept this... this fairy tale?”

Adjusting his miniature trench coat, Varric did his best to get comfortable once again as he looked the human woman in the eyes and said, “Seeing as how you failed to interrupt me, as you've often made a habit of doing, I'd say you were more than a little enraptured by my words.” He paused for a moment, seeing Cassandra's eyes narrowing even more. It felt as though two small knives were already stabbing into his soul. “Need I remind you that you were the one who asked me if I knew the tale? The tale of when King Alistair and the Hero of Ferelden disappeared without a trace.”

Scoffing indignantly as she crossed her arms, the Seeker continued to glare daggers at the dwarf. “I wanted facts, something concrete,” she said, “not some fantasy made for the entertainment of a small girl.”

“I swear,” Varric responded, raising his hand solemnly, “on my honor as a dwarf, this is straight from the horse's mouth.” At that, the dwarf grinned a little, amused by his own bad joke. “While yes, I'll admit, even I was skeptical when rumors about what happened began to spread across the land like wildfire. But, as storytelling is my passion, I made sure to know everything I could, even if it meant learning it from the source.”

Though still looking skeptical and unconvinced, Cassandra raised an eyebrow in a questioning manner. She said nothing, simply standing there expectantly and allowing for the dwarf to continue. “My time with Hawke didn't just give me insight into his own adventures,” Varric said. “It also gave me quite a bit of discussion with Blondie as well. Of course, I could barely even get the guy to address the rumors, much less talk about them. But... after a few drinks, well, he starts telling all sorts of secrets.”

“An inebriated mage is hardly a credible source,” Cassandra retorted, her mood not improving in the slightest.

However, the remark only caused the dwarf to smirk as he said, “And what about the king himself?” The black-haired warrior woman showed noticeable surprise at that, amusing the dwarf even more. “Though, he was just as tight-lipped as Blondie was. Had to rescue the guy from a sodding prison just to get the few scraps he gave me. I even managed to get in touch with Oghren, you don't even want to know what I had to do to get him to talk...” Clearing his throat, as well as his mind of several unsavory thoughts, the dwarf looked back to the woman and locked eyes with her. “I've even tried talking to Commander Cousland himself. Sadly, he seemed to have made himself busy as of late, making it impossible to gain an audience with him.” He gave the Seeker a knowing look. “Right before he up and disappeared once again...”

Cassandra looked away from the talkative dwarf for a moment, appearing distant as she developed a stance of deep thought. After several moments however, she shook her head in disbelief, or perhaps confusion. “But... that's just... that's insane,” she murmured.

“Makes a little more sense now, doesn't it?” Varric remarked. “Though a rare few know the full story, the bit about the colorful talking animals, the main premise of the tale is something to marvel at. Just think, Ferelden's king and greatest hero visiting a world that not only has magic, but lives in a constant state of peace alongside it. Now, tell me how wondrous and inspirational that must sound to mages now fighting for their freedom. Something to strive for no doubt. Believe me, it wasn't just Hawke's influence that incited this war.”

The Seeker continued to look somewhat confused, as though unable to discern fact from fiction in the dwarf's words. “But still...” she murmured. “To think... a world like that... has to be impossible.”

Watching her, Varric held a look of understanding. It was the same when he had first heard the more detailed story. “If you have trouble comprehending it,” he said easily, propping his elbows back on the arm rests as he interlocked his fingers once again, “perhaps... you'd like to hear the rest, when the tables were been turned. And we learn how some emotions can transcend all boundaries... worlds even...”

“What are you saying?” Cassandra asked, looking the dwarf in the eyes.

It caused the storyteller's lips to twist into a smirk as he nodded and said, “It's one of my favorite philosophies. For any tale worth telling, its end is only the beginning of what's to come.”

:twilightsheepish: Heh-heh...

Well, there's that bonus chapter I've promised. It's short and sweet, and a little bit, uh... jerkish/teasing...

Let me offer a little insight. Back when I was first planning out this story, I had actually thought about having some chapters either begin or end with a little back and forth between these two. Basically, the story would be akin to DA2 with Varric telling the story. Then I thought about how stupid that was and didn't bother. So yeah, this really isn't to be taken seriously.

God though... just mentioning Hawke in this just... ugh... Hate the guy so much. Just the thought of the fact that Bioware is putting him on the same pedestal as the Warden-Commander is utter shit. Guy who takes on a Blight almost single-handed v.s. a guy who killed a PMSing old woman who turns into superman for some reason... Just... I might actually hate Hawke more than I do Commander Shepard...

But I digress... Once again, I implore everyone to comment and tell me what you've thought, I'd love to hear the input. Now, this story is over, as it should be. Expect more to come soon as I get my next story up and running.

- Icecane

I've enjoyed this story from beginning to end, you have done a tremendous job and for that you earn a follow, Great job sir! :pinkiehappy:

Nice but I was hoping for a clop chapter.

2431247 actually i wouldn't dismiss this at all, it is pretty well written and actually fits in pretty damn well  i quite like it AND it fits into all 3 story lines pretty well  and i am actually very eager to see if you carry this on! i really hope you do

Ahaha! Varric, you sly devil! I wonder what sorts of stories he has yet to tell.

As for your disdain of Hawke, I am not certain he/she was espoused as great a hero as the Hero of Fereldan, so it seems unwarranted.

As for Commander Shepard, I must ask why?

Just think, Ferelden's king and greatest hero visiting a world that not only has magic, but lives in a constant state of peace alongside it. Now, tell me how wondrous and inspirational that must sound to mages now fighting for their freedom. Something to strive for no doubt. Believe me, it wasn't just Hawke's influence that incited this war.

Ha HA!! Kill them all, mages! Fight for your freedom!

Ah Varric, chicks do dig the chest hair. However much you may disdain Hawke, he/she was never, ever meant to measure up to the Hero of Ferelden. Hawke was meant to show the leading paths into the mages rally to freedom/rebellion and the shift in the Templar's role from protection to domination and then utter rebellion of the chantry.

But enough about politics and philosophy, if memory serves me correctly Varric never called Cassandra by her first name in the game. More than likely if he ever called her anything but her title of "Seeker of the Chantry" or just "Seeker" then she'd kill him or... Shave his chest hair.

All in all, a good addition and I look forward to the day this story is followed up by a sequel. (Not likely I know but there is always hope.)

2432165 My Shepard dislike is really the same reasons I don't like Hawke. Bioware's love of the "create your hero" is ruined by these guys. Their VA's are awful (for both genders I'll add) and your dialogue choices are barely ever what you mean. Hawke basically has three aittitudes while Shepard has two, all of which are done poorly.

Looking back at Origins and their last generation games, like Jade Empire and Kotor, at least with a silent protagonist what you choose is actually how the characters react. And it's not as cut and paste to create the Good/jerk characters to form the illusion of choice. In those games, your character wasn't really a 'character', but in ME and AD2 they are characters, very annoying characters.

2434898 yep after 30 years of having the taint in there blood they will go mad. says so in Origins.

2436759 Yes but in legacy (dragon age 2 DLC) that is deeper explain the taint makes you influenced by the song the dark spawn hear, the call of the Old Gods. its explain its more a madness then actuly death sentence, that old commander is sane (i think) enough to return and fight the call on his own, and the magister's calls are jsut as tempting as the old gods I THINK. though am not sure, I am just putting that out there for you partner. :twilightsheepish: hope it helps.

And that line is the best thing ever, and from the best dwarf ever! :pinkiehappy:

I love the bonus chapter. Cousland went back to Equestria. Though I dont know to much about DA2, I remember the name Hawke. I really couldn't play that game. It was utter shit. The only cool thing about it was the fighting. They should remake Dragon Age Origins with the graphics of today and the fighting of DA2. Now that would be something to play!

So you are going to tease and not let anything come out of this? I don't believe you.

This was barely satisfying, it needs to continue. Maybe add the few redeeming characters from DA2 into it. It can't just end this way, more can come out of it. Too good to end.

I just realized that there is going to be a sequel. Because you dont know what happened to chrysalis. Which means theres a great possiblity that she was made into a brood mother and is giving birth to darkspawn changlings or changespawns if you will so makes haste and bring us the sequel!!!!

2481615

Perhaps. Wishful thinking, maybe. Although if there is a sequel, it probably won't be up for quite a while, considering how recently this was finished.

Amazing story, this is definitely one of my fav stories....mostly for the fact that you actually finished it. To many great stories I've read were simply abandoned after I became enraptured by them....it was quite annoying. So I must thank you for bringing us such a wonderful story.

Not often I'm this impressed, kudos on a great story. It was a pleasure to read and if there will be a sequel I'll await it eagerly

Amazing story. Love how you ended it here with the commander disappearing again.

this ending....this fic.....i didnt think it was possible to cross DA and MLP.......i have been proved fucking wrong :pinkiecrazy:

good shit. *faves and likes* :moustache:

Best crossover ever and you know your lore dam well sir :moustache:

Just finished reading this (finally) and I have to say... I enjoyed it. It has its fair share of errors, but it was enjoyable. Liked and Faved.

One word to say of this tale.
DAYUM! :pinkiegasp:
Your good. :rainbowkiss::raritystarry:

hey can anyone tell me if any of this spoils any of dragon age origins because i dont like spoilers yet i kinda want to read this

I just have to say this, I enjoyed this fic immensely. I think a testament to it is the fact that besides the name, I had no idea what dragon age was about before this fic:rainbowlaugh:. Seriously though, an amazing job on this fic, and I'm excited for more. Who knows, I might give the games a try. They certainly sound cool.

4838908 Ya, one of the groups I played D&D with a few years back gave one guy all their money once they had the equipment they needed so he could buy loads of dancing weapons, he wound up with 3 flails, 4 fifteen foot long spike covered chains, a pair of axes, and a sword made to be carried by twenty foot tall giants using both hands floating around him at all times, attacking and defending with the amount of skill he could wield them with, while he carried a shield in each hand and wore enough armor to make a battleship blush with envy. :pinkiecrazy:

May I ask what sort of Crossover this is?

Rereading comments i an a snarky asshole but i wholly agree with the jokes and statements
