Shilic

Just a trans girl writing horseword stories while thinking about all the longer stories I could be writing. And then not writing them because I get easily distracted.

A battered journal, cover marked with three purple stars. Within lies documented a mare's decent into madness.

Twilight Velvet is a struggling author, attempting to escape a bout of writer's block. In dreams of a shadowy city outside of comprehension, she finds her muse; inspiration that blossoms into obsession.

But from whence does this obsession spring? Her own mind, or somewhere more sinister? What is the truth of the city bathed in shadow, and its mysterious master?

An entry in the Ancestral Tribute contest.

I was in the city again; this time, a name came to me, somehow. Tambelon.

:twilightoops: Oh dear. And here I thought it was Nightmare Moon.

I didn’t take him for a horror fan, but it turns out he was much more interested in the magical logistics of a city held in a sea of shadows between realities.

Lovely characterization note for him.

Whatever is causing this is coming from… from inside my own head.

The call is coming from inside the house.

That ‘the guardian of dreams can’t save you’, whatever that means.

Yeah, it really would've worked out better for Velvet if it were my first guess...

I choose to believe Night Light defeated Grogar by patiently, unperturbedly explaining how Tambelon can't actually exist, banishing the entire city to the furthest void in a puff of logic. :raritywink:

I don't know how he does it, dude what's your secret.

I either have very good or very bad time management, depending on how you look at it. :derpytongue2:

In any case, brilliantly haunting work. Thank you for it, and best of luck in the judging.

This was pretty good! I liked the vivid nature of the imagery, as well as Velvet's characterization.

I really liked this story!! It reminds me a lot of lovecraftian horror, and it's very effective in creeping up on you :D please say you'll write a sequel to it at some point!!

I had vague ideas for a sequel, but they're for a much longer, more adventure focused narrative in a more traditional format, one that feels wildly ambitious and much more difficult to make work. I also have several other things I keep meaning to do that it sits behind in priority order.

that sounds fair, I really enjoyed this one :D

This was really interesting! The details of the world in Velvet's dreams and how it was affecting her real life were written really well, and the journal format worked well for the creeping dread. The bits with Grogar wanting people to know about Tambelon reminds me of how the Pony of Shadows was presented in the comic before season 7 started. I wonder if Grogar's attempts changed his future or simply brought it about.

Hello! I reviewed this recently, but it's about time I gave your the courtesy note and upvote the story deserves. So here! I was taken with Twilight Velvet's characterisation, which took an angle I don't think I've seen before.
