User datagram protocol: a kind of "send some information, but we don't care if it gets there, only that it it does we can check that all of it arrived" thing. IP is the Internet protocol, basically the most fundamental way to address a data packet for transmission between two computers. So, UDP over IP means sending data across the Internet that we're okay with losing because more is probably on the way. Essentially.
TCP (transmission control protocol) on the other hand is more reliable but potentially slower. It's more like a conversation between two computers where you're spelling out the WiFi password. Something like "are you ready?" "yes, go ahead" "okay, a f e b..." "I got a f e..." "0 1 a a 3" "! Got a a 3" "wait, a few letters ago, b 0 1" etc. You're basically guaranteed to get the data sent eventually (so long as the connection still exists) but because of the back-and-forth it could be slower.
Hope that was good enough for you to translate that into your fic.
