I didn't think about it but I would say that wouldn't work either. The first spell is like a locked door and the only way to unlock it is for the the pony who cast the spell in the first place is to cast the reversal spell. No other kind of spell would work to get the pony trapped in the void out.
I have experienced something like this once in a dream when I was 5.
Having no body;
yelling/crying out for my family and hearing an endless echo while knowing no sound was made or truly made;
running in a straight line desperate for anything other than all the nothing but not moving an inch;
eventually just curling up and giving up;
And finally waking up and all out sprinting to my parents' room crying and begging to not die.
Truly a horrifying experience and the only dream I can remember that early in life. It's the reason I'm afraid of death.

This is a very Lovecraftian story. No easy answers, just more mysteries that, in this case, might only be resolved after death.

why oh why do they not learn the spell first!? if you are speaking it then it must have words. if it is a word it has some meaning. Why do all the "great unicorns" never seem to understand magic 101; never cast something you don't understand.

Maybe someday, I'm kind of stuck on where to go with it. One idea is maybe more info about the origins of the spell but I'm not sure yet.

My guess is it was maybe a spell to experience the afterlife, but to experience it while your mind is still attached to a body means it will feel like everything has been removed from you, your senses, feel of time and space, as if you no longer exist, but your mind is still there.
I still come back to visit this story every now and then, several years after first reading it. While I tend to prefer longer stories, this has to be one of my favorite short stories ever written on this website. It's such a simple concept, but a terrifying one nonetheless.
