the closer she gets to him, the higher the chance of that dark, sad, death tag coming into play mostly with regards to one or both of them.
I say this since there is a good chance of Celestia casting mind magic to erase Thomas's mind to get her lover back which I count as a death, she's still bat-shit crazy enough to do something like this.
Also if they do get caught then want to hold out a silver of hope that Thomas can bargain for Shift's life, which isn't 100% going to work.

I hope this story isn't dead as the author introduced a way to keep Tom safe and undetected for a time and thnx to Shift he now knows he has quite a bit of Chrysalis' magic in him now Tom needs Shift to teach him how to use it to remain undetected a bit longer and maybe with Chrysalis' magic in him he might be able to rewrite his own DNA enough that the bloodhound will become completely useless and since Celestia think all the Changelings are dead she wouldn't think of using anymore Changeling tracking, exposure, and detecting magic this could be a boon for both Shift and Tom, for a while at least. Heck if the author wanted he can write a way that Tom and Shift can build a new changeling hive with the secondary goal being to keep Tom protected and hidden
