Celestia suggests that Luna try hoof-painting as an outlet for her frustrations. It is not the wisest of ideas, as it turns out.

I wrote it entirely for the moment where Luna discovers her muse in a facecloth.
The rest sort of fell into place after that.

One technicality: when you mix a bunch of random paints together in the same bucket, the result is brown paint.
Pouring them into the bucket, they will stay separate for a bit. But if you mix well, it turns into brown.

Well, this is a fantasy story, and it is fingerpaint, which tends to be more viscous, so it wouldn't totally mix. But on top of that this is Luna we're talking about -- if she wants to mix paint in a bucket and keep the colors separate, anypony gonna argue with that?

Luna, go mix us a batch of spotted paint.

Thanks much for reading it! I tend to sympathize more with Luna myself, since she's such a wonderfully geeky character to write for, but I'm gradually learning how to bring out Celestia's point of view.
