Twilight Sparkle never thought highly of comic books. When Spike filled up the Golden Oak Library with his hoarding of comic books she decided to organize them after forcing poor Spike to read 'proper' literature. Yet morbid curiosity got the better of her, and she decided to answer herself one simple question: Why do foals like comics so much? Contains parody of Marvel's The Avengers film.

Nice work, spot on characterization!

...Is that last comic G1 MLP? :rainbowhuh:

Okay. That Avenger reference went on WAY longer than I expected... :trixieshiftleft:
But was Ruby Heart actually an MvC 2 reference or is that just a coinsidence?

If there was maybe some editing out of the Avengers scenes and and some more focus on Twilight, this would make an okay short episode.

As a comic fan, I am so very grateful for this fic. Thank you.

Not really... I was thinking more along this:

Yeah, you're right. I think I should have shorten the Avengers parody. Thanks for pointing it out.

And I thought up of Ruby Heart's name on the go; I didn't put much thought into it, and I wasn't referencing MvC 2 either.

I've made changes to chapter 3 and 4 thanks to feedback from Banana Prince. I've just realized that the Avengers parody bit have went a bit overboard, so I cut down the longer bits and added a new scene with, you know, the actual protagonist. :twilightsheepish:

Oh great! Now she'll start going to comicons and create an actual working Steam Vent suit.

I think this comic may have saved Spike's comic collecting habit.

5189252 1. Yes. 2. My God, I love your profile pic!

With the first stack done, Twilight moved on to the second stack. Twilight drew out the first book from the second stack, and she immediately spotted a problem. There was a mare with unrealistically slim body on the cover shooting fire bolts, while standing on her hind legs, her body twisted at her waist almost a full hundred and eighty degree to face the reader.

“Ugh, has this artist even learned basic pony anatomy?” Twilight threw the book into the crate.

The rest of the books in the same stack had better-drawn cover – relatively speaking. The stallions all looked buff and muscular, bodies so unrealistically huge they would put Bulk Bicep to shame. The mares were all equally slim, draping themselves all over the colts, and showing their backsides with sensual looks of seduction for the readers.
“I saw you fighting the minions all by yourself, and now all of a sudden you're helpless?” Twilight complained aloud. Twilight was speechless. After all the build-up and twenty pages of violence with blatant disregard for the lives of innocent ponies, the story abruptly ended with the villain killed off in the most anti-climactic way possible.

What on earth happened anyway? Why was Vondork fighting Minehord? Why did that mare suddenly become a damsel in distress even after being clearly portrayed as a strong warrior? And why the sudden revelation that Minehord was Vondork's brother? Nothing made sense.

“What a rubbish story.” Twilight flung the comic book to the stack where it belonged.

Sounds like someone is an Atop the 4th Wall fan! :pinkiehappy:

5189252 Okay I thought so and thanks. I want to get it changed if I can get someone to draw my OC.

5190819 Hey Knighty! When's the next chapter of Crusade's End coming out?

Twilight seems a bit too quick to jump to the "clearance sale on comic books = greed = hoarding" train of logic. Also, I'm not sure I think very highly of the setup for this premise...I can't see Twilight being this judgmental about comics.

>> Twilight seems a bit too quick to jump to the "clearance sale on comic books = greed = hoarding" train of logic.
Well, I want to give Twilight a reason to read comic books, and also give her a reason to separate Spike from his comic books. I was thinking even if Spike wasn't letting his dragon greed taking over again, she just assumed the worst and jumped the gun. It's a bit of a jump of logic, I agree, and maybe I could have make it a bit more believable.

>> Also, I'm not sure I think very highly of the setup for this premise...I can't see Twilight being this judgmental about comics.
Thinking back, I guess you're right that Twilight doesn't need to be so judgmental in this story. I was just thinking it'll be funny if her worst prejudice against comics appeared to be confirmed when she read some truly awful ones first. Maybe toning down the her inner diatribe would have helped.

I also imagine she hasn't heard of MLP version of truly great graphic novels like Watchmen or Maus*.

Anyway, thank you for your feedback. Really appreciate it. :raritywink:

* I've yet to read both in full. Maybe someday.

I've finished reading this.

Honestly? It's entirely too preachy. I mean, even the show isn't this preachy at its worst.

5213555 Everything about this story reads like an author tract on how some comics are deplorable, sexist, and excessively violent, while other comics are okay in moderation but children should be encouraged to abandon comics in favor of "real" literature as quickly as possible.

There is no subtlety to the message of this story. It's like being hit with a sledgehammer.

In her mind, comic books were nothing more than mediocre pulp fiction devoid of any literary or educational value.

(gun shot) "Oh I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?" :trixieshiftright:

I might have been listening to AT4W while writing it...

I'm sorry, but being both female, and a proud owner of the Blackest Night graphic novel, as well as Superman: Red Sun and Captain America: Winter Soldier (both the graphic novel and Movie, I might add), my respect for Twilight has dropped by a point or two.

Twilight, I am ashamed.

5213725
Eh, I just saw it as Twilight learning that not all comics are bad, as well as broadening her horizons.
But to each their own.

Welcome to Atop the Fourth Waaaall,
Where bad comics Buuurrrnn!
Linker's here to teach you all
A lesson you should leeaarrrn!!!!

Yeah I've never ever EVER met a librarian with this mindset. Libraries go by volumes issued, ya don't get more funding if somebody reads milnes over cookson. Hell mi mam insists if not for "pulp and romance" half the libraries out there wouldn't even exist.

Twilight learns comics just like any other kind of book can be good or bad, that medium is not a measure of quality. Just wait till she discovers trades and graphic novels. Like what ever the Pony version of Watchmen is.
