Dawn Stripes

Sequels1

T

That's right. This story has the infamous tag-trifecta of pony blasphemy. We're shipping humans with ponies over here.

But what's this? Something's gone wrong. Our bipedal hero doesn't want to lose his heart to an equine!

Poor, broken-hearted Carrot Top! She just can't understand it. Who wouldn't want to be shipped with a pony?

Quite interesting... I look forward to reading more! So, was Cloudkicker just being Carrot Top's "wingmare" or will we be seeing more of her?

Wow, I like it. Would like to see this continue. Faved and liked.

Wow, you almost NEVER see Carrot Top. Kudos for taking the road less traveled!

I liked that you showed that the languages are indeed different. That is a nice touch that most other stories don't go into. Now what is really rare is a couple dynamic, he has a fiancee . That is going to make one interesting story as they learn the culture together.

Also Luna is a show off.

4314780

Well, I told myself I wouldn't spoiler, but Cloud was indeed playing wingmare--in just such terms. Sad to say she won't be back. There was a lot of pegasus-related stuff that didn't make it into the story.

Always nice to see someone come along, take a relatively common concept and, with their talent, make it new and interesting again. There may be nothing new under the sun, but everything is new if you haven't personally experienced it.

I can already tell that this is going to be a gem to pay attention to. Thank you so much for writing it.

4320180

Heh. You've made an olden pony very happy. I've been waiting eight years to hear that.

A really interesting fic, good job.

Interesting description. I'll add it to my read later list and get back to it in a few days.

Day is playing hard to get and that is just making Carrot fonder. Allie is really open to this idea, wonder why...

4348034
Maybe because she's bi, misses female companionship, and finds ponies cute?

Ah Carrot. Bludgeon that poor human over the head with equine culture a little harder, maybe you'll stun him into acquiescence. Then you just drag him into your cave by his hair.

Heh.

All joking aside, the clash of human and pony sensibilities is very well done, very amusing stuff. I've been enjoying this as much as when I first started reading Xeno. If I have any criticism, it's that the scene in which Day goes to get forgiveness felt a little confusing, just a little rushed, maybe? It works, don't get me wrong, but I think it could have worked a little better. It feels like there's a scene missing, maybe from Day's perspective? How did Allie react to his outburst? I think it could have given a little more insight.

One last thing. I don't know why they're agonizing about a hands free computer interface... those have been around forever.

Examples of available hands-free computing devices include mouth-operated joystick types such as the TetraMouse, the QuadJoy, the Jouse2 and the IntegraMouse, camera based head tracking systems such as SmartNav, Tracker Pro, FreeTrack, HeadMouse Extreme and HeadMaster, and speech recognition specialized for disabilities such as Voice Finger. The joystick types require no physical connections to the user and enhances the user's feeling of independence. Camera types require targets mounted on the user, usually with the help of a caregiver, that are sensed by the camera and associated software. Camera types are sensitive to ambient lighting and the mouse pointer may drift and inaccuracies result from head movements not intended to be mouse movements. Other examples of hands-free mice are units that are operated using switches that may be operated by the feet (or other parts of the body), such as the NoHands Mouse and the switch-adapted TetraMouse. Speech recognition specialized for disabilities and hands-free computing focus more on low-level control of the keyboard and mouse than on usual areas like dictation.

Now granted, such technologies aren't perfectly suited to ponies, as they've been developed with disabled humans in mind, but a good engineer could use such a tech base as a jumping point to integrate and develop some sort of augmented reality interface, probably similar to a Google Glass, with tracked eye movements and a mouth operated joystick for mouse applications and what have you.

On the other hand, since you bothered to mention it at all, it's clearly a plot point that you're working towards, and you likely have your own solution in mind. I just thought I'd mention the above.

Our mammalian hero doesn't want to lose his heart to an equine!

...But ponies are mammals too... :rainbowhuh:

Ah well, I'll read it and see if it strikes my fancy.

4349119

I did, but the scene where I explained it and it became plot-important got cut--very sadly.

You make a totally legit point about those technologies. But on one hoof, of course, they're not perfectly robust, as you've pointed out, and things like mouse drift, false positives or lag wouldn't likely be acceptable for a military application.
Also, I re-wound the clock. This story is technically an alternate history with First Contact occurring at some point in the oughts, so that Day is meeting Carrot in roughly 'present day'. So we don't have technology of that nature more advanced than we already have.

My proposed solution would be a typewriter-looking board with about ten large buttons, each with a small LED or segmented display that can change. Hold one button down, and each of the other nine buttons displays a specific character. That way, with only space for ten keys you have ten x nine two-key combinations, which is enough for a lot of different buttons. You can even display all the letters of Equus, which I quite arbitrarily (and conveniently) imagine to have eighty characters :derpytongue2:

Tell you the truth, I am pretty self-conscious about cutting that. There are good reasons I did it, but it leaves much of the backstory in this chapter as a bit of a loose thread, not leading up to as much as it feels that it should. Definitely one of the bigger weaknesses of this story.

Did you write Carrot Top with an Irish accent? Or since they're actually speaking a different language, presumably it's meant to give a similar cultural flavour to her background? It'll be interesting to see what you do with her family reunion if so - ponies performing Riverdance, maybe? (Would be impressive to see that with twice as many legs tapping!)

Back to Cassie. She still wasn’t meeting his eyes.

Kind of amusing, but while flicking between Carrot Top and Allie at one point you merged their names into Cassie. I'm not sure if that was intentional as something Day was supposed to have thought or a mistake.

4354342

Oh, horsefeathers! Allie's name was Cassie at some point, and my word-replace must have missed it. Thanks for the catch. I'm going to go edit that now.

Well, hell... this is actually really well done. Bravo.

It's rare that I genuinely feel like the ponies are being represented as a foreign, or alien I suppose, culture in the ways that they interact with people.

Good writing, solid pacing, excellent characterization... and the way you both portray Day's inferiority complex about the morality of his own species as well as the reasoning behind the interspecies attraction feels well-thought out, where it could have easily felt contrived.

Many, many props to you. I eagerly look forward to reading more.

Hmm. Interesting... in an extremely open culture like that, completely unambiguous consent seems to have an importance that outstrips even human conventions. What interests me however is the strong hints of backlash and censure against Day for it. Is that just a father trying to defuse the situation and protect his child? Is there some kind of reverse blame going on there? Or is it something purely Equestrian... does he think Day is leading her on?

I'm not entirely sure, here... and it's made even more ambiguous by the fact that Day WAS in fact, leading her on. Not intentionally of course, because even DAY isn't sure what he wants at this point.

It'll be interesting to see where this leads.

On a sidenote, I'm quite interested in the gate network this setting appears to have. Having mentioned Turians, AND Twi'lek, that would imply that the setting has connections to both the Mass Effect and Star Wars universes, and has had such for long enough that interspecies dating is common. Which is cool, bad ass, in fact, but it does raise the question.... those are some extremely advanced technological settings, and here we have a human culture which doesn't appear to be that much more advanced than our own.

So obviously I'm misunderstanding here. Is this a case of, Equestria has limits on what kind of technology is allowed to proliferate? Or is it simply that this isn't a setting which connects Mass Effect and Star Wars, but rather just connects the Turians and the Twi'leks specifically, and at a vastly less advanced state than in there canon universes?

Also, on another note, I'm not getting any indication when this story updates, even though it's on my favorites list. That is... troubling.

Why does this story not tell you when it update? This is so strange.
So why didn't they invite the fiancee? Would have made things easier probably.

4372541

'Completely Unambiguous Consent.' I like that.
D'aww! Well, since you're interested, there are a couple things going on. Earth x Equestria have been tied tightly together since First Contact was between those two races--they're allies and closely tied to each other, since they like each other so much. But to some degree it's them against the multiverse, because humanity doesn't have that kind of relationship with any other state or race yet.

And though some 'proliferation' of technology would occur anyway, it's not quite that easy. At least in the case of the groups you mentioned, their societies are stupidly far ahead of Earth's (especially the SW universe). Imagine giving a Stone Age society access to ours. Would they quickly assimilate our technology? In fact, you can see this happening in real life. And they don't. They don't, for instance, have the infrastructure to make computers, so seeing them does nothing for them. Furthermore, many times they don't even have the mental 'infrastructure' to USE a computer, even if you give one to them. And interactions tend to be quirky and non-extensive, so the one society doesn't necessarily advance quickly. Though humans are scrambling to bump things off the Turians, who are less than super-keen on it.

And then I go 'wait a minute, what is this guy doing in my favorites list?' You're the author of Quantum Castaways! Dude! When are YOU going to update?

I mean, you influence my fannon! That whole beginning of chapter 3 just now? Who do you think planted the seeds for that?

So YOU were the super-duper-awesome party pony who inspired ME to become a super-duper-awesome party pony! Swear on Cammon Bear!

And this whole sub-genre of fanfiction is becoming one big literary circlejerk!

Am messaging the moderators about the notification issue guys BTW.

4373049 That's very sweet of you to say. It's very gratifying to think that my contribution to this fandom has inspired such a talent author. If there is one thing I've learned in my time with this fandom, it is that we fan writers are never as creative a force as individuals as we are collectively. In the interests of continuing the free exchange ideas and creative help, I will be sending you a PM with my Skype contact information. Feel free to contact me at your leisure if you want to bullshit, or you need some help. The group I write with is very talented, and includes such individuals as RandomEncounter, Invictus, Nugar, and several others.

Quantum Castaways would not be anywhere near as entertaining a fic if it weren't for those guys and their tireless help. I believe you may be acquainted with Invictus, as he started reading this story on my recc. In any case, if a circlejerk we be, we may as well do it RIGHT.

On the subject of technology proliferation, I imagine it would be a case of how much time we're talking about since the gate nexus has been in operation. The Mass Effect universe has Eezo as a limiting factor in its technology, that and the fact that there is a unified government of sorts would make restricting technology to Earth feasible. This assumes that the Council exists and that there is a version of Earth in that universe that either doesn't have access to the Gate, or for reasons I'm not entirely sure of have decided not to give their human cousins a tech boost. At the very LEAST, if Cerberus exists, you better believe a Black Market for tech would exist. Cerberus would LOVE to have a pet human empire, if they could swing it.

As for the Star Wars universe, the problem is that it is very much a loosely governed group of polities that no one group has absolute control over. Unless the gates are FIRMLY in someone powerful's neighborhood, free traders wanting to make a cred, and those ruthless or unscrupulous individuals willing to exploit a backwater system for profit would be on it like mynocks on a power cable. Hell, while you're bullshitting, the Twi'Leks are pretty mercenary where trade is concerned.

To say nothing of how integral slavery is to their culture, but my understanding of the race could be a bit flawed.

4379139
And you could expand upon the magical side of things as well. Give the ponies something to play with and find a world that has a higher magical progression. Probably not in this story as it is mostly focused on romance.

4383116

And that's why all this stuff isn't in the story already with me being spoiler-tight-lipped about it.

4383308
It's better being focused as it is right now. Just alluding to the possibilities makes the world you are building here entertaining.

...and a little scary for our two worlds.

4384022
4383308

Agree. The story doesn't NEED outside speculations right now, it's very well focused on the primary narrative, but I think we can all agree that it is fun to speculate.

4385070

Well, yeah. Otherwise we wouldn't be on FimFiction.net :coolphoto:

A night club, not the best way to introduce a farm pony to their local deity. It's interesting to see all the excuses that Carrot makes to justify Luna's actions. Like a culture shock almost.
A little something outside what this story will show. The humans are bringing technology to the ponies, so what are the ponies bringing to the humans? Outside of furry sweaty snu-snu.

furry sweaty snu-snu

I'm ok with this...

4422322

Magic research, foremost. Enchantment is a crucial component of the Dimension Gates.

Also, does this mean you got a notification when the story updated this time?

She wondered every now and then if ponies here remembered that they were called to higher standards than most of these exotic beings from beyond the stars.

Wow, that doesn't sound the least bit bigoted at all, Carrot!

“I should start with a pad of larger buttons,” he mused quietly.

picturesnew.com/media/images/genius.jpeg

It would have been an annoying facet in a pony she expected maturity out of, but in Allie, a delicate giant with the excuse of having never learned about real relationships, it was ridiculously adorable.

Wow, I didn't realize your way of doing things was the only acceptable correct way of doing them, Carrot!

I sense an even greater clash of cultures in the future, thanks to Carrot's "traditional values". I'm looking forward to the ensuing drama it will no doubt cause.

Although I really like this story, one thing I'll profess to not liking is the fact that there are more than one world connected by the dimensional gates. It's not the idea of a multi-reality setting that I don't like, it's the fact that doesn't seem to be even the least bit important to this story's setting, so the inclusion of other worlds feels completely extraneous and unnecessary at the fundamental level.

4422322
An admittedly unintended (at least in Carrot's case) attitude of superiority, if Carrot's comments (which are, admittedly, supposed to be conservative) are to be taken as not being radical or extremist and thus could at least be considered not uncommon among ponies.

4425451
Yes! I actually got an update.
Given that they have access to other worlds what makes pony magic stand out? Is it just because the two races formed a partnership?

4427633
Exactly. This is along the lines of what I was mentioning in my post. The inclusion of other realities besides Earth and Equestria seems extraneous to me, and just raises all kinds of questions that really don't help the story. He could have just left that information out and it wouldn't have had any impact on the story itself, since they aren't even remotely important.

for the longest time i thought Day was super religious what with all his arguing, then you tell us hes not and yet he still argues that love is clearly defined and cannot exist outside of a man and woman. i am infinitely more confused with Days moral compass.

I've just realized something that was bugging me for a bit when I tried to picture how the characters were interacting physically. Just how tall are your ponies? I got the impression they came up to near Day's chest height while standing... but you keep describing Day as "looking down" at Carrot Top whenever they're sitting next to each other.

That doesn't make any sense, though, because a pony sitting on his/her rump would not be any shorter than when they're standing, and I doubt Day's head comes up to where his chest would normally be when he's sitting down (unless he's got either abnormally long legs or an abnormally long torso). It's a minor point... but I think it's important to keep relative proportions in mind when describing scenery, or it can cause a reader to loose track of what's going on (physically) with the characters, which can be really important when you're trying to set a scene/mood.

On a more positive note, I like your portrayal of Day as a conflicted character. People aren't always logical, and can often find themselves playing the role of devil's advocate when confronting a third party. The fact that his own hypocrisy is highlighted so well in the process of his pointing out Carrot's really made that scene as poignant as it was. In reality this is the form that culture shock most often takes... defensiveness and internal confusion.

Loving it so far.

4454784 I'm just going to go out on a limb here, and say that this is less about religion and more about shame. You can argue that that's religion talking, but it's more a cultural taboo. Granted, religion is mixed in there, but you can be an atheist and still be raised in a culture with heavy religious overtones and pick up some baggage. I know, I'm an atheist and I say "goddamn" and "oh my god" and "Jesus Christ" reflexively all the time.

Day wants Carrot, and is ashamed of his feelings. It's kinda like how it seems to turn out that those individuals who are the most vehemently against homosexuality often harbor homosexual leanings themselves. It isn't ALWAYS the case, mind you, but it happens often enough to be significant. This kind of moral floundering is characteristic of a guy who ultimately doesn't want the decision to be up to HIM. He doesn't think he's strong enough to make it. That's well demonstrated by how the family visit turned out. Hell, Carrot's father basically called him on it, without saying so directly. That was straight up censure, because the stallion thought he was leading his little girl on. It was a "shit or get off the pot" gesture. This is a man who doesn't know what he wants, or rather, knows what he wants but is ashamed of it. Look at how often he's tried to abdicate responsibility for the decision. He WANTED his girlfriend to be against the idea, because it would let him off the hook. He's repeatedly tried to drive Carrot away, to make the decision up to her. I don't think Day is religious, I think he's running out of reasons to say no, and he's grasping at straws.

It's... an interesting situation. I don't know if it's possible for it to end well. The bottom line is, if Day really wasn't attracted to Carrot, there wouldn't be an issue, this would be over already. Carrot knows that. I think, to a certain extent, Allie knows that, although I'm not entirely sure about her motivation here. The only one in denial here is Day, and if this is going to resolve in a manner that DOESN'T lead to heart break, it's going to be up to him.

The trick is... I don't know if he's strong enough.

4457325
I have a feeling that if this turns out poorly Day will lose Carrot and Allie. Allie can see what Day is doing and has thus far been patient with him and she knows he is attracted to Carrot. This story has been going on through a period of several months for the characters so I wonder how much longer he can yo-yo with them.
I don't see a sad tag for this story so I'm not expecting that to happen.

So the religion thing, the ponies have a physical goddess with them. If the humans in this story have a god they got a spiritual god which is much harder to be connect with.

Day can't go a day without thinking about Carrot. It is turning into an obsession almost.
Something not talked about before, what does Carrot think about Cadance? She is not of the pony sisters, but she is the alicorn of love.

My Confused as Fuck-O-meter just spiked.:derpyderp2:
Didn't Carrot make Allie cry last chapter? By saying that she was only talking to her to get to Day or something like that? Don't know why but I seem to remember it like that.

Day's a jerk, I will cut some slack haveing a persistent mare chasing him around asking him out and trying to force herself in the relationship.

Annd favourited. The chapters are a good length, the story's done well and while there is the odd hiccup with grammar it doesn't disrupt the flow. Now to wait for the next chapter...:ajsmug:

Carrot Top sat up for a long time, even though she could have snuggled into his chest, curling her head under his chin so that her horn gently traced the side of his cheek.

You transposed a name here. I think you meant Lyra, unless Carrot Top has a switchblade horn. Dun Dun Dun.

That aside, I think the little bits of culture exposed here, and the stuff going through Lyra's head at the end were beautiful. Really, truly beautiful.

the meshing of cultures is always a messy affair for the first few years. brave couples these beings are.

Oh dear, Lyra's heart is big enough to want to love two. Can only hope for the best...

Can I say something? I feel I must say something.

This story...is so FUCKING GOOD! Seriously, this story is so well made, so well created that I desperately await the chapters you put out. This story has wonderful characterization, a unique idea involving the multiverse and pitch perfect pacing that makes it impossible to stop reading.

Whatever you do, never leave this story by the wayside like so many authors have with their stories. I HAVE to see this one through to the absolute end!

4528493

You think this is tough, you should see real life, Amirite?

4529744

Aww, thank you! Don't you worry, we're going all the way with this one.

4530892

we have videos of that stuff, not pleasant, lots of violence.
