Day 23. He stalked through the dark, silent streets, his aura held close tightly to his body, so that a black miasma seemed to surround him. He looked up at the pink building in front of me. He focused my senses a bit, and frowned. “It’s starting.”

He phased through the front door and went up the stairs. No sound was made between his hooves and the wooden surfaces. He glared at the bedroom door. “How many times does it take for you to understand.,” he whispered. He walked through the door, a scythe forming out of the smoke around him.

A crack bends to the side, letting in a smoky blur step through. I looked around at the gently snowing landscape, frowning. “So this is the place I got assigned to. Again. This place seems to get targeted a lot more often. Though baby bunnies do get their fair share too.”

I checked my watch. “Yep. Much slower. I wonder how this place is different from the rest.” I stuck my hands into my pockets and slightly trudged across the landscape, blurring through miles.

Don't worry. You're not the only one. Probably 2 other people ended up silent, and another only told me that the first chapter needed more context.
On the other hand, people apparently hate the Main character. He's not supposed to be likeable anyways, at least for the purposes here, so I guess I did my job.

I just noticed. That last sentence "Just because everyone else already has." is also simultaneously the in universe explanation for the events of the story. Within every world, as people go around spreading holiday cheer, a silent group, forever invisible to the inner dwellers, fight an endless war to let them continue to enjoy what they have. The rules exists to keep the demons at bay.

And they will continue to do so. Forever.
