My favourite chapter. :P
Holy Shit that was an epic read
but for the love of god please tell me that this is the only one like this one
3107901
Thank you.
And yes. The second longest chapter is a good 20K shorter than this one.
Well.... I did NOT see that one coming....
I officially no longer feel bad about the length of my own story's chapters. I forgot how long this one ran. Testament to how good it is that I still read it through in one go. You just can't stop, once you start.
This story updated at 12:11. It is now 3:41. I took no breaks, didn't even get up to get a glass of water or to go to the bathroom.
I just read over 51,000 words in one sitting.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
*dies*
My favourite chapter as well.
3106958
You'll see soon enough.
Y'know, it always kind'a bothered me that Rarity made a set for Luna but not Celestia. Did she not consider Celestia a friend? Did she only make one for Luna because Luna was the sole Princess at the time? It's just weird to me that she'd do something that special, make such a personal sacrifice like that, for someone who isn't one of her very best friends (which isn't to say that Luna wasn't her friend at all), a fellow ministry mare, a life-long friend and fellow wielder of an Element. But then not for another pony who, as far as I know, should've had a similar amount of respect. Sure, Celestia might not be a princess any more, and her reasons for abdicating her throne could feasibly have lost her some respect, but she'd done a LOT for the 'mane 6' in her time. If not for Celestia, they never would've even MET, each other OR Luna. Have I just forgotten some crucial detail? Did Rarity have enmity for Celestia for some reason I can't remember or outright missed? Did she think Luna needed them more? It's just weird to me.
3108890
Luna needed them more.
3108890 It was likely also a way to make sure there were exactly 42 statues.
Man, this chapter. This chapter. I'm not sure what to say about this chapter. It's a novel all on its own; the grand finale of everything that came before it. There's pretty much no subplots or rising action left after this chapter—from here on out it's going to all climax all the time.
...
My favourite is still Pinkie's orb.
I never realised just how long this chapter was from the PDF version. I mean seriously, that's longer than most fanfics.
Well, that's two and a half hours that I'll never get back.
Totally worth it!
This is the chapter I always think of whenever someone asks the question, "How long should a chapter be?" My answer would be "Exactly as long as it needs to be," and this chapter is a perfect example of why. Sure, it could be broken up into parts, such as one chapter per ministry/orb, but much like those statues, it's stronger when it's all together.
There's a lot of parts of this story that I really like, but this is definitely one of the high points. There are even a few that got me a little choked up the first time (Finding Pinkie's undelivered message to Twilight being one of them). The end of this one gets me every single time.
I think Fallout: Equestria has the best rendition of Rarity that I've ever seen.
Over 50000 words!!!!
Holy damn...I never really knew how long this chapter was until now. All I did was read through it in one sitting, and that was that.
51k words? I think this may be the longest chapter I have ever read in a fanfiction.
Aaaaand I failed to read this chapter on the stretch of a single day. *Sigh* So, I can only comment on what I've already re-read (even though I vaguely remember the events of the whole chapter from my first reading).
Ah, Littlepip, reminding the readers (well, at least first-time readers) that you are about to do something great and significant without revealing what it is. You little tease! I think Homage should be proud of you.
This, right here, is Velvet's most perfect quote. It fully reveals her character in just a few sentences. She does realise her reasons for losing herself in the orb, meanwhile pointing at her being a medical pony, a professional, and she shows her unwavering nature while waving a smooth dialogue, ending her statement with a pointed reminder of Littlepip's addiction.
Velvet Remedy is a great mix of Rarity, Fluttershy, and, well, Velvet Remedy herself.
Velvet, dear Velvet... Sanity is a full-time job in the Equestrian Wasteland. You can't remain sane through sole escapism.
Yes, Littlepip. Yes he did. Which means he's finally beginning to overcome the sorrows of his past, focusing instead on the brighter parts.
Yes, Velvet, fire-breathing, pony-eating, cannot-be-killed undead zombie dragons are very, very cute. (And she still threw that delcious-gem-incrusted fabric at them previously. I can only assume that it was her Rarity part, and this was her Fluttershy part speaking.)
Aaaand now I have an image stuck in my head, of SteelHooves with a staff shouting "You shall not pass!"
*Sniff* Lyra... *Sniff*
Call it overthinking, but I find it symbolic that there were six pieces of the butterfly. Six pieces of the butterfly shattered. Six friends torn apart from each other. Pretty symbolic, intentional or not.
Oh God... That scene where Velvet Remedy cracks... Her reciting Fluttershy's speech, paying homage to the pony she always found solace in... A very, very powerful scene.
Why do I have a feeling that this is a nod towards iamnotacleverpony, one of the fandom's wonderful musicians?
Waaaaaait a minute... How did SteelHooves find them with Littlepip failing to find them? On her own PipBuck?! Either I'm really really stupid or there's something I'm missing here.
You and me both, Littlepip... Now to actually remember where... Oh. Oh, of course.
I wonder how many years of therapy does one "special" Homage therapy equal to?
Silly Calamity, you're the Element of Loyalty. Stick to your Element, please.
Yes. Just like Quills and Sofas.
Don't worry, Calamity, your Karma is already Good, if not Very Good.
51K words?
I knew it was long when I read it, since it took me like, 3 hours or something ridiculous to read, but shit.
Didn't know it was that long O.o
I started reading this at 6am Pacific.
I finished at 3pm Pacific.
Total reading time during that period: approximately 4 hours.
Lunch plus random life things totaled the rest of the time.
I love chapters this long!!
Wow, Rarity...
I was all like I got this, and then that happened. Now I feel kind of like Little Pip, I feel awesome right up until the crash.
static.funpic.hu/_files/pictures/original/20/33/43320.gif
GREAT!! But way too long. This is the longest chapter I've ever read on FimFiction.
3108158
5:03-8:07, beat ya. and in one sitting.
This chapter, god it was awesome and a great read.
Hot damn, second longest chapter I have read. Sorry Kkat, but Sweetie's Manson's latest chapter was 58,000+ words. Both were definitely worth the hours it took to read though, seriously.
"Brevity is the soul of wit..."
- the asshole I had to slog through half a million words of to get through high school.
So there's that argument debunked.
Also, who wants to bet I can catch up on all of this in less than two weeks? <fastens adult diapers>
aLL OF MY TEARS
There it is chapter 37. Thats the chapter I wanted to know the word count to. Thank you Kkat for ending my not stop question. Also why did I think it was chapter 43. Guess I'm crazy.
3111071
12:05 - 1:43
I win.
This chapter took me all day to read... WORTH IT!
3112579
...!!!!
HOW THE BUCK DID YOU DO THAT?!
3112591
I read very fast.
Of course, it helps slightly that this is the second time I've read it.
oh my god finally. I started at 5:00 P.M reading this and after a few interruptions, facebooking, dinner, and finding music, I finally finished this chapter at 1:30 A.M
I feel so triumphant.
3112835 Man, the fact I can't even remember the name for three dots in a row does not speak well of me.
That said I didn't even notice them when I was reading it.
I have yet to see a chapter in any story be longer than this, ever.
Never have I been more happen to see an alicorn die than when Little Pip killed that Nightseeker bitch, Luna has been avenged!!
3112634
It means you read 530 words/min or 9 words/sec non stop for hours.
p.s. it took me 3 months for translate this chapter to russian.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/14zZMS8U9OLc00UjIRxQklPY_tazcceLaviRBuggFGHs/edit?hl=en_US
Favorite chapter here too, really long (to the point it could be a fic on its own) but the payoff is incredible.
3110399
Actually, "None shall pass!" is from the Black Knight in Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail

Luna. I am gonna have some elaborate revenge fantasies tonight.
SPOILERS
We interrupt your normally scheduled silliness to say DISCORD'S FRAGRANT FARTS, THIS CHAPTER IS LONG ENOUGH TO BE ITS OWN NOVEL. IS YOUR BODY READY? (DON'T LIE, WE KNOW IT ISN'T.)
We will resume queued broadcasts (now slightly delayed) next chapter.
I remember being a bit thrown by this. It was rather more outside the fourth wall than I was expecting.
Of course, once the context of the narration became clear, this made perfect sense. I just had to wait for the story to end.
In truth, I might have preferred a little less editing at some places. Some sort of brief transitional explanation between Ponyville and Ironshod, for example, would have been nice.
The Pink Cloud does have rather a tendency towards fossilizing organic materials. A necromancer's joke, perhaps, to have it turn stone to dust and flesh to stone.
It was going to be bad enough before you jinxed it. Nice going, Littlepip.
It's a relative term. And trust me, that run is going to look positively dessicated by the time you're through here.
Part of being an inspiring hero is the opinion that appearances are more important than practicalities sometimes. Practicalities don't draw many followers.
Just because it's the pot saying so, doesn't mean the kettle isn't black. Anyway, you two have different problems: terminal curiosity versus overpowering escapism. It's kind of like the pot calling the bread brown, when the pinnacle of racial superiority is the milk? Is there any way to extend the metaphor the way I want without making it racist?
Also, how many people these days own a black pot? They're basically all silver.
Now Princess Celestia's School for Vicious Zombies. It's undoubtedly the best place in the nation to study rabidly attacking anything that interrupts your daily routines, especially if you minor in being hard to shoot because you look like a child.
There's simply no way to deliberately engineer the kind of durability you get from things that are too cheap and disposable to be in any way degradable. Unless you're Apple Bloom, of course. She's apparently magic like that.
Still, I think those mugs from the Hippocampus plant would be much more stylish armor.
Well, somepony had to go and predict you'd be in and out within a hour. What were you expecting?
Ah, the 50s. Good times, good times. To mock.
She's not going to forgive you that easily. Tonight is going to be pretty unpleasant.
Why pick just one? Good friends have complementary flaws.
Silly Littlepip. You're not thinking this through properly. It's worse than you realize. That she learned to create Pink Cloud, and thereby got her cutie mark, proves she remained sapient after her death. That she is using it in an attempt to kill you rather than just blindly physically attacking proves she still retains at least a little intelligence. And yet, she never left the school, and probably started looping her last day as soon as she woke up from dying. No mindless zombie, she, but no less hostile. Have any of the zombies you have killed been as animalistic as you believe? Could you ever bring yourself to fight these children if you realized they retain the ability to think? Could you let Calamity, even?
Well you were always kind of racist. Brahmin, dragons, hellhounds: you have a fairly spotty record with non-equinoid creatures.
Symbolism!
Well, then. Here we go. The night that AJ saw that SteelHooves wasn't a better pony.
I am so arbitrary in my opinions. I never questioned this. I couldn't say why I just accepted it without any consideration.
You know him. You know how he is. You have every reason to be disappointed, but you have no reason to be surprised.
It's hard. Usually, you can't at all. When you walk ahead, the path is narrow and dark and all about are the specters of death and despair. And the only way to keep the darkness from another is to point any light source you have backwards. To become lost takes but a single misstep, and most steps are guesswork to begin with.
In the dark, we walk together, all supported by the others but none protected, or we do not walk at all.
When all the truth does is make your heart ache, sometimes a lie is easier to take. But that doesn't make it better.
An old friend lives there.
I like Mouse. I wouldn't mind seeing more of her. Though Celestia only knows how the side story I seem to be proposing would work. I don't think she's main-character material.
Some of them did an okay job, arguably. Stable City is pretty prosperous.
RIP Lyra.
So precious is anything of the old world that has survived unsullied. Too precious to profane with any alteration.
Just in case you were wondering, Velvet, you can never criticize Littlepip's relationship with memory orbs ever again.
RIP Rarity.
It was nice of you to plug up the window like that.
After two hundred years, one more seventh reunited at last. As they should be.
I wonder what's the minimal set of side stories that accounts for each of the remaining 24 statuettes exactly once? I wonder if one could pick out 24 different side stories, each of which includes exactly one statuette, so as to get six of each Mare.
Sorry, sorry, 22. It's 22, right? It was silly of me to forget that it's possible for a statuette to be accounted for without being in a full set.
This lack of ambiguity I can only blame upon myself. I just can't disagree with Calamity, even if I want to.
Seriously, if I die and you're in danger of starving, please eat my corpse. I would be insulted if you chose to die instead. Other than the fact I'm dead in this hypothetical, of course.
Nopony ever accused Twilight of having much design sense.
She has chosen your head as a suitable tribute to her pagan goddess. Weren't you listening?
Well that spell looks familiar. Has she seen the book? Have I forgotten how many alicorns in Canterlot went fully rogue?
It is really quite beneath you, Calamity, to be caught by surprise when your gun runs out of bullets. You were a champion sharpshooter in the Enclave back when you still lived up there. You should know better.
What made you think this was a good idea? SteelHooves can take care of himself in the contaminated water much better than you can. And you'd think you'd have learned by now that any water deep enough to hide a broadcaster will contain several.
I wonder what her plan was?
Ironically, the stuff you've been putting yourself through is going to be overall beneficial to your life expectancy. Taint is funny that way, sometimes.
Invisible, horrible, and helpful. That booth, terrifying as it may be, is probably way better for you than constantly drinking healing potions.
Careful. You're getting dangerously close to Apple Bloom's trade secret. You wouldn't want your PipBuck to think you might realize and reveal that Apple Bloom invented artificial souls to make her creations last. You don't want to know how it would exercise its loyalty to her.
Don't be such a hipster, Velvet. You know full well that Littlepip would absolutely understand. You wouldn't follow her otherwise.
Ah, the craziest alicorn of all. I like her. She's completely off her rocker.
Birdshit is both highly convenient and clearly effective.
You don't know who you're talking to. If Littlepip thinks you need to be put down, she'll find a way.
I'm kind of curious what that way would be.
That's not very RPG of you. It's like the world wants you to let it crumble around you while you get cats out of trees and photograph rare flowers, or whatever.
Except that after this, there'll be war. There ain't no rest for the wicked, and all that.
And then you can take a nice, long, weather-god nap. You'll have earned it.
This the part I always ask about right after I assert "I never doubted you, Scootaloo." This is what I'd question, if I questioned. But the current regime screwed up, quite dramatically for this Stable to be put to use. Why should they be allowed to retake power?
Though this does bring up some other questions. This Stable was meant to house their sisters and idols, among others; how long did it take them to decide what was the proper course of action? Who proposed the idea, and who had to be convinced to go along? Did they really make the Stable strong enough to contain the Princesses indefinitely?
She has a strong will, to have remained sane. Ten years alone, I am sure, is plenty of time for a ghoul to go feral.
Immortality is a long time to remember your mistakes. A normal lifespan can already be too long for regrets.
One more set of words to regret.
Trust me. You're still doing better than the average pony. "Average" often is tragically unintelligent.
I hope you're ready for the trippiest conversation you will ever have.
Trust me, nothing will ever top talking to a two-centuries-dead mare who is having a mental breakdown while on drugs and a projection of her in her normal, slightly more sane state.
Yeah, and I think I forgot to mention the parts about her knowing about her future and your future, and being picky about spoilers. Strangest memory orb ever.
That's just crude, Calamity.
You say that like it doesn't. The One Ring doesn't like being locked away. It wants to be out in the world, causing evil.
I'm not going to correct myself. It's practically a phylactery, and phylacteries are all the same.
My precious . . .
Don't worry. You won't even find one complete princess, let alone two.
You can. If you don't eat the dark side's poisoned cookies.
The Black Book will say anything to get used. Because when it is used, it's generally the one doing the using.
As I remember, Luna did not get her own set to start with. She just received a statuette from each of the Six. She broke every set except Spike's.
Symbolism! Symbolism worth catching, which I would probably have missed indefinitely had I never reread the story.
Littlepip is suggesting I remember wrong. But I think there was a conversation later that backs me up, isn't there?
I forget, is there going to be an Indiana Jones reference? Because I cannot help but think of the place where they put the Ark.
Well. I totally forgot about this line, and by extension about the fact that anypony referred to sacrifice as a virtue before chapter 45.
Interesting.
A most odd gesture. Over the course of a year, I still have not decided upon an opinion on it.
Mostly, yes. Strange gifts, indeed.
She practically is.
19 hours, 24 minutes, apparently. Easily under a day even without having devoted that much focus to it. I can't have spent more than a third of that time actually reading; a bit over half was devoted solely to sleeping.
That was...rough. I..wow, Poor Luna.
And what the hell Pinkie!?
I just had to make sure LittlePip didn't ruin the story.
Pinkie. Pinkie stop. The fourth wall can't take it much more.
so, so much text...
I know this was written long before Bioshock Infinite was released but
Lutece twins
Well... Flaming sun-farts.
Hell of a chapter... And I see where things are going. I already accidentally spoiled myself on Pip's life/death status by reading further than intended on the wiki (I was so close to being able to say I avoided any spoilers... I was/would've been so proud), but even without that, I think it's quite clear.
Dammit, Littlepip, you're supposed to make bed babies with Homage for all time.
Edit: OH YEAH. Important thing I remembered just now in the middle of the next chapter:
How the hell did those orbs all make it there? When one of em contained a memory from *during* the bombardment and releasing of the Cloud?
Interesting.
--
I agree with Phoenix_Dragon--Fallout: Equestria Rarity is incredible. I can't think of a fic where she's been presented much better.
Oh, but I remembered a thing I was gonna say about a previous chapter: the Bob/Herbert thing. I was expecting to see something like that for some time, or at least figuring it somewhat likely. I like how it was done, lol, though slightly disappointed it wasn't more like the original thing. But then, since when is anything in this story exactly the same?
So my verdict is "yes."
...why
Any plans to make a book out of this like Penstroke did with his Past Sins ? If not why not, it's fantastic and easily rivals 'Lord of the Rings' etc. Big Thumbs Up to you Kkat for creating such fine work and sharing it, must have taken ages, many thanks ! :
Three hours, twenty seven minutes, two sandwiches, and one thousand milliliters of water later... I have just read the longest chapter of anything I've ever read. Ever! Dang, Kat! That was amazing! I really loved this chapter. I've got a thing for those memory orbs, ya'know? That was really, really good. I instantly knew what Rarity was about to do when Littlepip went into The Diamond Orb, but I didn't completely see that ending coming. Hoooo! That was brilliant! And The Balloon Orb. That one was brilliant, too! Dang, I can't wait to finish this story! I'm thoroughly enjoying it, so far. I'm really hyped to see how all this ends. It's been quite a ride, thus far. Anywho! I talk too much... So yeah! Fantastic chapter! That said, I'm outta here!

There was a project a year and a half ago where they printed a couple of hundred copies
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V0vRCpLywqs/UBHUZ-_dohI/AAAAAAAAwmk/20SQrspyY2w/s1600/1.jpg
I was lucky enough to order a copy of my own, and even Tabitha St. Germain (Rarity's voice actress) has her own set
http://www.equestriadaily.com/2012/09/tabithas-fallout-equestria-collection.html
there are no words to describe the roller coaster of emotions i felt while reading this... but mostly it was sadness and awe.
So, i'm kinda new to Fallout, is +1 Luck a good bonus for reuniting a set of soul jars whose nature is opposite to the Black book?
As in, how much big +1 Luck is?
Well there's 2 days I'm not getting back. It was worth it though.
