Princess Twilight Sparkle,
Oh, how long I've waited to start using those words. It's been so long since I've had a student that's made it far enough to be worthy of that title, and here you are.
You faced quite the odds to get here, Twilight. The spell Starswirl wrote but never finished was a test I hoped you would complete in a very timely manner, given the nature of the spell. Mayor Mare just about lost it once the cloud weather looked like a chessboard, not to mention the flash heatstroke and blizzard weather patterns. Add in your friends doing the thing they thought their cutie mark was telling them to do, and this whole situation felt like it was ripped straight out of Discord's playbook.
I knew this would happen, by the way. Of course I wouldn't just send you a spell of Starswirl's as chaotic as this without a backup plan in mind. Had you failed, I would have sorted it out myself. I solved his spell beforehoof thanks to your many, many friendship reports giving me a greater understanding of friendship than Starswirl ever had. I wish he was still around--he would have benefitted from them so much.
But you succeeded, rising far above my admittedly low expectations, and now you're a princess. One without a castle to call your own, but a princess all the same. Now, since you're freshly coronated, you shan't be exposed to the wonderful world of princess politics quite yet, especially not until you have a castle ready to contain such lunacy. Although I assume you're well and content with living in that treehouse, that spot's not nearly large enough to hold an audience for your court sessions, so I'll speak with Mayor shortly after you read this. We can figure out a temporary arrangement in the meantime until you have a castle you're comfortable with.
Enjoy yourself, Twilight, and thank you for proving to me that despite all your faults, and I mean a lot of faults, you're still diligent and dutiful, and quite worthy enough to wear a crown that's not just for show.
With love and great respect,
Princess Celestia
Oh, hey Luna.
Pay up? Oh, right. You won the bet.
Hang on, let me find my coinpurse. Can't believe it took her less than two days, and she didn't even send me a letter asking for help!
Well, yes, I'm happy that she did it relatively quickly and without assistance. Why wouldn't I be? Here, take the bits.
No, I'm not mad about this bet, because even though I lost, I still won. After all, she's a princess now. That's what's important.

Yay! Here it is at last! :D
Oh, yeah. Twi is going to be so happy to read this letter.
"It's been so long," she says. So it has happened before. Cadance, or somepony else?
And yes, I'm sure it was Twilight's friendship reports that would allow Celestia to fix the spell. She's shown such high esteem for them in the past.
In any case, this is indeed a momentous occasion. Nicely commemorated.
Oh you, Princess...
Twi reading the letter and is like over to and finally

Less that she learned what to do from the content of the letters.
... More that she learned what NOT to do, and that being a good study in friendship on its own.
Will you be doing a letter about Equestria Girls?
This says a lot about what actually matters to Celly, and how little the other five count in this.
//Cynical mode ON//
Then again, im cynical on this specific bit of the show, and i see the whole "make Twi an alicorn" as little more than Celly building up her tool/weapon stash with little care of the consequences or (in this case) Twi's opinion on the matter... or the other five mares that got their marks/minds played with for a "test".
A test that Celestia took a lot of time setting up Twilight into, after all. What's a few mortals worth when you can get a new overpowered immortal that adore the ever living everything about you?
//Cynic mode OFF//
Castles arent there to protect from the outside, they are there to protect the outside from the insanity within.
Doubly-so with Twilight.
Wich might be why Discord didnt use a castle. He doesn't want containment.

The better question is why wouldn't I do a letter for Equestria Girls?
That might take more than one letter, though. I'll need to rewatch it to figure out what to pick apart or explain there.
Talk about a string of backhanded compliments.
well, that's season 3 complete
ONWARD TO SEASON 4!!!
Wow. Talk about damning with faint praise.
First Celestia says that she figured out the whole thing beforehand (and I bet she defeated the dreaded Ursa Major too), thereby drastically reducing Twilight's accomplishment and stealing the whole "invented new magic" thing. Then she makes it clear that Twilight is still only Princess Lite in her eyes. Maybe she can fly down and give Twilight a patronizing pat on the head, too.
Suddenly I look forward to when she gets plundersnatched in the next episode. No, no, Grand Cosmic Über-Princess Celestia, you know everything beforehand and have everything under control, so why don't you get out of that little thing all on your own? You don't need Twilight to help you, she doesn't even have her own castle.
(Really, you got that well-meaning condescension just perfect. Good job.)
I've been reading these letters for some time now, and I think that my favorite part about this is that even though Celestia's letters are a humorous take on what she might say to such situations, she still seems to remain very much in-character. Yes, she goes drinking with her buds and complains a lot about politics, but with all of her occasional snark, she always manages to get in a lesson about friendship and how to make it better. I have no trouble at all reading this using her voice as the narrator. Props to you! Can't wait to see how you handle Season 4 onward, especially with the lack of episodic letters to Celestia.

"First off, I am not discounting the five for what they've done to help my student learn about friendship, for without them, the likelihood of her solving the spell faced grim odds from the outset. Still, they did not solve the spell--Twilight did.
Further, the reason why I didn't tell her about the ascension ritual is actually quite basic. The last pony under my wing had learned about it prior to it actually happening, and it tainted her, twisting her ideals and turning her into somepony unfit for ascension of any kind.
She had such promise, too."
5826879 You could also do the letter Celestia presumably wrote inviting Twilight to the Princess Summit.
Oh, now that I find to be very much in character for Celestia: arrange things in a way that she always wins at least something =D
Whoo hoo! Season 3 is done! Onto season 4!
Oh! I'm so proud! But against all the odds....the people who said it wouldn't happen...YOU DID IT LUNA! You won a bet against Celestia!
...oh yeah and Twilight did...something, I think.
Wow, I just realized you might run out of episodes to write letters for before Season 5 is halfway through...
5827929
He could start to write Luna's letters.
5826879 how about her acting like a pony when a simple 10 seconds of watching other people do stuff would have let her fit in
I still think that the princess celestia twiligth encountered prior to becoming princess wasn't the real celestia but merely the spirit of the tree of harmony taking on a form twilight is comfotable with in the midst of preparing her for her transformation.
Makes mroe sense than celestia apparently waiting in some spiritual plane while at the same time flying to ponyville.

I'm not saying its shadow clones but...
I've absolutely loved reading these. Your Celestia is hilarious while also being compassionate and motherly. Keep up the good work!

1: I hold little love for people who bash their ignorance against innocent readers to begin with, but especially a writer who's obviously trying to do their best and just happens to trip over that one asshole who goes off on them because their waifu wasn't seen as a shining golden god.
2: This is how you feel on the matter, making it your opinion. Which I respect, but do not agree with or accept. For instance, he clearly assassinated his own character by being a prick to a (so far) quite level-headed and somewhat beleaguered author.
3: You are quite mistaken. I've spent a great deal of time over my years here pointing out the jackasses, insulting the odious, and generally just exposing that which is idiotic. Sometimes to thunderous applause, but often relatively unchallenged - I'm not the sort to flail about on people who don't deserve it. The issue is exactly the content of my post, you fail to understand just how much people on Fimfic hate Mare Do Well, willfully ignorant of the reasons why they do, and why the inception of Mare Do Well herself was necessary for Rainbow Dash's character growth and the plot of the episode. Until you've seen the writhing mass of waifu-cultists bellowing and bitching and whinging on in a vast mob as I have, I'm not sure you'll quite understand just how touchy the subject is.
4: This was over a month past. Bringing it up in the open again seems pointlessly inflammatory. If you have an actual issue and not unwarranted moralistic critique over my word choices, send me a PM and there will be clarifications and explanations aplenty. If not, let this be the end of it.
5833012 If that dont work, she always has Brutus
5827227 Would this student just happen to have the name of "Sunset Shimmer", by any chance?
5921137 Gee, I wonder?
5827227 If Celestia was concerned that knowledge about Twilight's impending Alicornhood would cause it to go to Twilight's head, then why not wait until Twilight has proven to be mature enough to deal with it? Does Alicornhood cause a pony to instinctively know how to deal with the power that comes with it without becoming egotistical or worse?
