A thousand years ago, Princess Luna gave in to the Nightmare Forces and transformed into the wicked mare of darkness, Nightmare Moon, and was sealed within the moon by Princess Celestia. However, something happened that night that shouldn't have. After Nightmare was banished, the Elements of Harmony, which countered the malevolent forces of Chaos, lost their power.
Without the power of the Elements to maintain the Harmony, Equestria faced a dire situation. Equestria, and the numerous kingdoms that surrounded it, vied for power, creating a political "Cold War" that at any moment could erupt into a full scale World War. In order to prevent this eventuality, Celestia formed a secret organization within the Royal Guard to take the place of the missing Elements. This organization, known as Mane6, acted as spies to secretly infiltrate enemy nations and undermine their agendas against Equestria. The age of espionage had begun.
Donut Joe, better known by his alias, Con Mane, was considered the greatest spy in Mane6. At least that was the case until he retired from the service for reasons he'd rather not explain. He opened up a donut shop in Canterlot and vowed never to take up the mantle of Con Mane again. However, about a year later, on the night of the Grand Galloping Gala, a member of the Royal Guard came to the donut shop. Con Mane's services were needed again, and, although he didn't know it, Joe was about to be thrown into a series of missions that would prove to be the most difficult, and most personal, he had ever faced.
