Is this story set in one of the alternate timelines that were shown in the series? In particular the one featuring the war between Equestria and Crystal Empire led by Sombra?

The setting is a decade or two after king sombra was defeated, though in this timeline the war was more drawn out with more dark forces at play.

Also, you have a good eye when it comes to Robert and his 'buddy' It's cool to see people getting into the story, it helps me understand if I'm conveying the story in a certain way I'm trying to go for. Evergore gives me some serious cultist vibes--only his cultist focus is on Celestia above all. Then there was the interaction between him and his two 'friends'--and man, did it sound fake as all hell.
Probably a hint that Evergore ain't really right in the head, but that's a given!
