The wall is the time when a womans prime is over. It usually tends to be around 32 or 35. Most women from 18 to 25 are in their prime, the time they're the most beautiful and fertile for bearing children. As they age, their looks start to decline. When the age of 30 gets closer, women's prime starts to decline and they usually start to panic about getting married and having kids.
A woman's chances of getting babies rapidly decreases at 35 and even if they conceive past that, the risks of complications, down syndrome, or other disorders increase. You'll see tons of women at this age try IVF treatments, which is expensive and still no guarantee of success of having a baby. I saw a video of this athlete who was 38 and doing IVF.
She was good looking and in shape but you could tell she was not as pretty compared to her 22 year old self. She kept waiting for that high value guy, and is trying to get a kid before it's all but impossible.
That's the wall, and that's what Applejack is dealing with. I'm taking a real life biological and social phenomenon and making an absurd story out of it.

Amusingly, the thing to turn me off from your story wasn't any of the usual complaints. No, it's the alicorns and their provisional immortality. Celestia and Luna had it.. because? And they lost it now that they retired? How does that even work? Story might be great, but addressing alicorns and immortality like a job perk is too bizarre for me.

Hey, take it up with Lauren Faust or Hasbro. I put it in there because as a way to have Twilight Sparkle be the leader. Since G5 came out, the Princesses HAD to have died at some point. It was a judgment call of background lore. I didn't think it be that big of a deal, besides, the alicorns are not the focus of the story. We don't really know why Celestia lived for 1000 years, but we do know Twilight Sparkle grew into a Celestia like body, so it can be assumed being a major leader gives you extended life. We saw that in the show.
Personally, SOME explanation to them being over 1000 years old would have been nice. I personally like Twilight Sparkle being normal pony size, but that's just me. Please don't give up on the story because of one minor background detail to this specific story.

Oh hell no, it's just getting started. Glad to see others know about the wall. It's a big problem and it's not just the US but the entire west as well. In the US alone, half of the women will be single by 2040.
And yes, most women only go for the top 10 percent of men and spend their youth having fun, then expect a guy will be waiting for them around 30 to 35. All the "good guys" they ignored for the bad boys is what they want and expect.....now, when they need a decent guy to stick around.
But they don't actually WANT the good guy, no, they just want what he can do for them. And if they get tired and get what they want or if him, BAM! Divorce rape and move into the man of their dreams.... which they somehow think they deserve or will get a high value man. But they'll get a simp. Sadly, they exist.......
