In an Equestria where race determines status, earth ponies sit at the bottom of society. But then a new technology is born: Solaether, a form of energy that runs on solar power and promises to even the score.

But when the Crown outlaws the new tech as "sun theft," calling it a crime against Celestia, outlaws called "Shiners" take up the fight.

This is their story.

Ok this is an interesting premises. And the writing isnt too shabby either. im looking forward to this series and how the writer explains the ignorance of the crown.

The chapters being brief snip-its is a touch annoying but it makes sense.

Damn, this story is charming. Looking forward to more of it :)

I'm definitely enjoying this. I love a good revolution.

incredibly bold take

Lovin this so far. Viva la solaether!

This is cool! Too bad it's not yet finished, so it's only "in spirit" of the sci-fi contest…
still eager to see what's next.

She is terrifying and cool. Not at all what I expected.

Wow. Someone knows their medieval philosophy

Looking forward to more. Solarpunk needs more content.

The Sun granted us its avatar, Celestia, and so it is that sunlight is Hers, and Hers alone.

…and…

And the fields themselves would go untended even as our Sun, continually drained, went cold.

And then I thought, just wait until they discover geothermal power.

Wait, so there's more than one of these stories? Can I please get some links?

I'm not saying that it automatically makes a story bad, but why do authors always make the earth ponies be oppressed in dark stories like this?

Historical precedent. Think about it: what are earth ponies best known for? Farming and manual labor.

Now think... in every human society, particularly in ones where inequity is rampant and there are class divisions (which, really, would be just about all of them depending on how far you carry that), who is on top and who is on the bottom?

It's always the people who toil in the fields and haul the loads and deal with the dirt and sweat. There is no society in history where the most powerful person is a farmer. The ones on top are the ones who don't have to do labor: the politicians, the priests, the bureaucrats, the businessmen, etc.

So, since stories about ponies are stories about people, if we're writing about inequity and classism and racism and such... well, it's just a no-brainer. Earth ponies are oppressed in these stories because, if it were real life, that's exactly what would happen.

And I would wager that in the same such vein, that since the princess is surrounded by 'the elite with all the power' no one of the commoners can truly approach her, due to the elites either doing a 'run around' game with the earthers and continuously keeping said princess out of the loop with busywork or false/ tampered information.

That's cause it's both logical and common enough to be a trope.

I've got to say I'm really enjoying this story. Can't wait to see how it plays out.

“Why you arrogant, upstart, snot-nosed little son of a—”

and it's at this point is where I would have gutted him
