Mockingbirb

A pony of mystery in the darkness. Or I forgot to take the lens cap off. (They/them is fine.)

Like all the other high schools in the country, Canterlot High has a new Mandatory Moral Education program.

The VR technology is very advanced!

The morals...maybe not so much.

"I think I know why it's required," Sunset said. "I think I understand why the Moral Education Laws exist. I think it's because the people who write those rules are evil devil worshippers. I think they WANT to see people suffer. They say bad people, who do bad things, will be punished in hell. But they also force anyone who goes to high school to be tortured like this. Isn't torturing people bad? So why do they do it?"

Okay. Now I know governments are morally bankrupt on every level. But this is ridiculous. Even by fanfiction standards.

"I just wanted to write about being best friends with Virgil, the woman I love loving me back, and dunking on the pope. I didn't want everyone to suffer like the sinners."
—Dante Aligheri, probably

There's horror here, but it's in the background details. Looking forward to the Million Sinner March as Sunset goes to Washington.

I see! Self-insert fanfic of the Bible AND the Aeneid, friendshipping yourself with Virgil

That's the worst part, Sunset; they aren't. They might actually think they're doing good here. They think they're on the side of the angels, showing people the horrors of sin and scourging those who pursue it, never realizing that it's not the good angels they're fighting alongside. They fail to realize that their ends, while worthy, don't justify their means; as a matter of fact, they frustrate them. All trying to whip people into giving up sin like this does is scar them, maybe even make them less receptive to doing so. The people behind the Moral Education Laws think they're making the Devil cry in anger, but really they're just making him laugh.

The Divine Comedy has all the hallmarks of bad fanfiction centuries before it was cool.

Huk

Huh... that was... weird. I'm not sure I'm getting the 'message' this was supposed to convey... :unsuresweetie:

Not according to the story tags nor Sunset's demeanor in that scene...
