When I saw Smol Twilight and not Big Twilight, I facepalmed. So, taking everything in from A New Generation, Tell Your Tale, and Make Your Mark; I present to you, THE PAST!
Twilight has been presented a prophecy, one that'll determine the future of Equestria. A new threat rises on the horizon and sometimes it's best to step aside and let future generations deal with it.
(Yes, I am disregarding the comics. One, because I don't want to read that nor do I know how to read it. Two, because it just seems wrong. Dunno how else to explain it.)

Even though we didn't get any information at least a kind of makes sense what the idea is so it looks like Star Swirl made another prediction after he passed away and saw the tapestry of sunny and her friends in the future that they are going to be the new generation but before she could have said something it looks like Opaline was about to attack Twilight and flurry heart tried to stop her but Opaline installed her power and Twilight use every amount of power to contain her magic even putting into the crystal but it was leaving her weak and going to the fact that Opaline was about to finish it so Twilight use the crystal to record her message going to the fact she'll be a little different and she told flurry heart to take the crystal and run and Twilight felt like she failed Opaline but I'm sure she did everything she could that's pretty sad and this is pretty good story keep out the good work

True true, there are some that are considered canon or could be called canon. It's just too much of a hassle to deal with it, lol.
I think Opaline has a lot in common with Sunset Shimmer before her reformation, but with one fatal difference. To start with, they have a very similar false belief.
Like Opaline, Sunset had a lot of pride, arrogance, and blind ambition. She had disdain for friendship and lacked empathy for others. She was a narcissist.
But when Sunset was confronted with the truth, when she was defeated in her demon form by the Human Mane 6, she let go of the lies she'd been telling herself. That she was "better" than others and "deserved" more than them. She started on a different path and became a better person/pony.
Opaline, when confronted with the truth, doubles down on her lie. Her defeat at Twilight's hooves only served to reinforce her delusions and narcissism. Opaline's pride is way stronger and more toxic than Sunset's. She ended up alone in her castle for over a thousand years instead of being able to start new.

Also, most of what was revealed in the comics about the "canon" story came from one source in-universe: Discord, the Lord of Chaos.
He's not what you could call a reliable narrator, so I advise taking anything he says with a grain of salt.
