That makes sense. The beginning of the story is the ending of the first Baldur's Gate from 1997, which was a fairly faithful adaptation of D&D Second Edition with THAC0 and everything. It's a great game (although the second Baldur's Gate is much better), but the skull trap bit is exactly how everyone cheesed the last battle, give or take some wands of fire and cloudkills.
