I was also considering an "it was Starlight with Trixie casting illusion spells on her" angle for Mane-iac's presence, but Vis told me early on in this collab that it's set in season 3 with pre-alicorn Twilight, so that had to be ruled out. (Plus, her being a comic book character literally come to life is cooler :P)
That chronology is also why the mane 6 (save the obvious exception) are still pretty hostile to Discord, since they took a while to warm up to him after Keep Calm and Flutter On.
