Many of the ponies think that Nightmare Moon has ceased to exist, but what nopony knows, is that actually, she is living in the old castle of Everfree Forest, thinking of a way to get revenge on Celestia.
After she finds a pool that is capable of making clones, she sees the perfect opportunity to get revenge at Celestia. The only problem it's that her clone is very cheerful and only speaks "eternal night."

I mean, remember how you had beaten them earlier with barely trying?
And they aren't that observant either:
One time Cadance/Chrysalis sung an entire song anout her evil plan and none of them noticed anything, despite her being so loug it must be heard in the entire castle wing...
Unless her copy would have the same idea at the same time.
Then she would have to literally fight against herself...
Deny it all you want, but in the end she might make for an good distraction.

We don't know for sure the clone died.
When the Pinkie Pie clones got destroyed their bodies disappeared, but the Nightmare Moon body is still there.
Maybe she is just knocked out.

The Nightmare Moon clone was pretty cute.
Aside from the side-effect of the Lake Mirror's clones being simple-minded or something, I bet how the clone acted reflects a adorable side Nightmare Moon has if she wasn't busy being bitter and wanting eternal night. Like her kinder side if she got the love/attention she wanted :0
