Seer

T

Sunflower doesn't do well by himself, he never has.
But the guards hate him and won't allow him to have a cellmate.
What they did give him, however, was a mirror.

I think this was the first story of yours I've read when lurking. I dislike Sunflower as a person, in part because he reminds me of my worst times as a poet and student, and because his isolation rings a little true. There's a muddy perception of what is right with the guards being needlessly cruel to his fate, since it is very plausible that they want amusement in needling the guy here, but also that a cellmate would be put at risk with a narcissist like Sunflower. Obvious Narcissus myth references aside, it's interesting that Sunflower makes an antagonist of his own self, especially since he loves and despises it (?) at the same time, resenting him for failing his expectations, that Sunflower was good and he just happened to force his hoove. I have a little more to chew on here since I need to read it again, but it's always irked me that it got no response, since it was a disturbing short piece. I enjoy your writing quite a lot.
