Why would the magic that allows pegasi to fly be cancelled out but not that of the unicorns? All in all a very interesting chapter that poses many questions about the lost city of Skyreach or whatever force is protecting it
are pegasi and unicorn magic on different frequencies?
7964456
What an excellent question.
Is that a forest of nullwood or is there some other effect that eliminates certain magics?
7964457
An even better question.
7964464
If it was nullwood, Vinyl would not have been able to teleport. So the answer is obvious.
It is the first of Skyreach's many puzzles.
Ah, the inevitable result of mouth to mouth...Barf to mouth.
So if it was gaining speed forwards, is it crashing keel first?
7964530
It got pulled in, and then the heaviest end of the ship got pulled down.
Interesting. Based on this one could theory that while there is magic all around in this world, different tribes pull from different, how do I put this, spectrums or frequencies of the magic. If you could find the specific frequency that one tribe was pulling from, then it would be just a matter of trial and error till you discovered a way to cancel it out. Imagine, a whole army of unicorns unable to cast spells, Pegasi unable to fly, and earth ponies losing their tremendous strength. Quite a frightening theory.
7964552
And then there is Discord, who took away wings and horns, but saw no threat in earth pony strength.
If his magic wasn't affected why didn't Tarnish try to do anything?
Blocks pegasi magic, but not unicorn magic, in a pegasi city. A forgotten weapon against the city possibly? Such a weapon would be perfect for a siege against a city that can only be accessed through flying.
Alternatively, it would be the perfect defensive weapon as well. Keep all outsiders out.
7964575
Like what, exactly? He can't control his druid magic, which he is just now starting to discover at this point, and he doesn't have much in the way of unicorn magic.
7964577 Yes! My thoughts exactly.
7964552
Then what's raw magic?
7964582 He could have at least triggered a random poison joke surge?
7964477
Indeed, of course. Does the snowflake resonate in the presence of pegasus magic?
And also, how is this somehow the centaurs' fault? =P
7964594
Several miles up in the air?
Why?
Edit: I mean, there wasn't even enough of a hazardous magic surge to even trigger such a thing. There is no logical reason that is consistent with past occurrences for this to happen.
7964556
True, but did he leave then alone because he didn't see them as a threat to his game or some other reason. If I remember right, he set the maze up as a game and took the wings and horns so they couldnt cheat and fly/wink to the center.
My guess is whatever ancient Pegasi built this place only wanted true warriors of their tribe to be able to make it so as a test for any trying to get in made the area somehow disable their flight as any old Pegasus, warrior or not could just Fly to Skyreach. Test of Strength maybe some of Skill. Maybe some kind of test for how smart they are because they wouldn't just want any old meat head brawler to make it. They would need ponies able to think, able to plan, able to strategize as well as fight.
7964590
The eather and lay lines. I think they mentioned in the weed or venenum locus that there is magic all around and the stones and flora help filter the bad magic into good. I may be completely wrong about all this, just a thought buzzing in my head.
7964599 It's what he did against the manticore, isn't it? It's his response to not knowing what to do.
So what if Vinyl teleported the ship, but flipped it over?
I mean, think about it, if your ship is falling, and you teleport it upside down, the momentum then is going up, cast a sticky hooves cantrip and viola, you've got yourself precious time to think while your ship's momentum pulls it back skywards before gravity reasserts itself.
7964633
Correct.
Pegasus ponies don't fly as much as they swim through the aether. Their wings don't push against the air, they push against the ambient magic in the air and propel them along. The aether is filtered magic that radiates upwards from the ground, from things like rocks, soil, water, etc.
It isn't that Rainbow Dash is a fast flier, no. She is a master aether manipulator and the pinnacle of pegasus pony magical abilities.
7964638
That was before he started drinking his tea and controlling his magic. Again, consistency.
7964639
Only Celestia or Luna could teleport that much mass.
7964653 well there's that.
Then what was Vinyl teleporting? Her, Dashie, Daring, and Tarnish?
7964658
Well, examine this logically, shall we?
How do you suppose Tarnish was standing in the wheelhouse one second and a moment later, he was out in the open air, looking down at the ground rushing up to meet him?
How do you suppose that happened?
Edit: You'd best be getting out your thinking caps and using those brain muscles. There is going to be a lot of stuff happening, just like I said in the blog post, and if you don't pay attention NOW, you will not understand much of anything going on later. And honestly, I have no plans to explain it. It's stressful having to trust the reader to be observant and engage their intelligence. So I intend to plow through and not think much about it later.
7964556
Huh, that comment right there reminds me of Estee's stories, if you've ever heard of her.
A key point in that story is how most ponies don't know all that much about earth pony magic.
But Discord did. And he did take it away from Applejack. And it scared the hell out of her.
Kudz. These titles. Plz.
7964624 Or... Or....It could be a dead zone where no aether is in the air.
7964686
It's a tradition that started with The Weed. I can't help it, the readers demand it.
7964647 Do Unicorns shape the aether around them or do they shape and project magic from within themselves? I'm sure Twilight covered this at some point but it eludes me.
The answer either suggests or completely negates my thought that the sky at least is bereft of aether or somehow severed from it.
7964728
Both.
7964733
Curiouser and curiouser, thank you.
7964765
Telekinesis is projected from within, as an example.
Transmuting matter is an example of manipulating the aether. Notable examples include stone shaping, stone shattering, plant shaping, transmuting an item from one thing to another, etc.
Fire starting is really just the creation of friction between molecules, agitated by manipulating the aether. Electrical generation is much the same.
7964778
Which is why Starlight's thorough understanding of physics makes up for lack of inherent magical power by being one or more orders of magnitude more efficient than the average unicorn. Indeed.
To Daring,
Doesn't it seem a little out of the norm for you to just accept your fate? I thought cheating your way out of certain death scenarios was a pastime for you?
7964816
Daring Do: At the time, that one didn't feel very cheatable, if you catch my drift. I thought it best to lead by example. Next time we're about to die, perhaps Miss Dash will be a little less excitable.
Well, until Vinyl started teleporting, I honestly thought nullwood. So yeah, I don't have anything new to add that anyone else didn't suggest.
Also, I'm not sure exactly how well I understand the nuts and bolts of how magic works in the Weedverse. I hope that doesn't get me too lost.
That title is not used in the way it was supposed to be.
How unexpected was that thought
Good job on another awesome chapter
7964975
I went back to reread The Weed, Venenum Iocus, and several other of my works, along with my notes. It's why chapter updates slowed down for a while. Understanding the magic of the Weedverse is going to be critical for this story.
It's why I was so stressed out in that blog post.
7965022
Yeesh, that bodes poorly. Honestly, the characters have always interested me more than anything else, so that's where the lion's share of my focus went. Tell you what, I'll just pay attention to the comments. Even though you aren't going to explain anything, I'm sure they'll be enough people speculating back and forth that I'll be able to piece something together.
Speaking of characters, I'm glad we'll see more of Daring Do. Thus far, I've only ever seen her in short bursts, so I haven't gotten a good feel for the range of her personality.
7965042
I am modeling Daring Do off of a real life human person, but I am never, ever going to say who. If somebody figures out who it is, I'll probably shit myself. Yes, I based Daring Do off of a real life woman archeologist. She was a badass that did a job that wasn't friendly to women.
She shot off a man's nose for groping her tit. And that's the only clue I'll offer.
Right, so. I really need to catch up on the Weedverse. That being said, it seems apparent that Skyreach is protected by a enchantment of some sort that negates flying magic. Given that the pegasi are unable to fly, while the unicorn is fine, that much is obvious. I would assume there is a magical component to the airship's ability to fly as well. If not, then the enchantment is not against flying magic, but a specific spell that brings down flying things. Important distinction, that. My money is on the first, though. This being a pegasus city, it makes sense that it would be defended like this. If no one can fly near it, it would be all but impossible to get in without knowing the secret - a secret which may not even exist. It's completely possible that the enchantment was made after Skyreach recused itself from society, meaning that no one was ever intended to be able to get in or out of the city at all once the enchantment was mad.
Mooooooom, he's doing it again!
7965449
I want to come inside of Rainbow Dash... and stick my tongue inside her rainbow gash...
7964728
Looks like a good hypothesis for what happened:
Stuff we know: The Aether is magic radiated from the environment into the air. Pegasi use that magic to fly, basically "swimming" through it, but a unicorn's spellcasting uses both that external power and their internal magic.
So, working with that, if the Aether vanished or significantly weakened. It would disable Pegasus flight (and any magic items reliant on it, potentially explaining the Endeavour's fall, if the airship is at least partially magical), but it wouldn't entirely disable a unicorn's spellcasting, which is why Vinyl is still able to teleport (although Kudz's list of which magics are internal or external leaves it out, I would make a wild guess that it's internal).
If we're right, I would expect to see some reduction in the kinds of spells that the unicorns can cast in the next few chapters (as spells reliant on the Aether won't function, but ones that aren't will), but not in the power of the spells that do function, and if that's the case I might upgrade this hypothesis to a theory.
7964666 sounds good. I'll actually pay attention. Double read chapters. Lol. Somehow missed that subtle hint.
