I WANT TO HUG ALL THE FLUFFEH GRIFFON CUBS! They sound adorable. Also, I wonder if all the dying land is having an Adverse effect on Cheerilee and Apple Bloom. While it probably isn't as bad as that one field that was burnt to the ground Tarnished and Maud came across, I doubt being in a land that is desperately wanting some love from Earth Ponies is doing the two of them any favors.

The feeling that Tarnish is experiencing is the implied effect on the earth ponies. Remember, Tarnish is more connected to the earth than to the aether.
Huh. Well that's interesting. I've kinda been wondering what the CMC have been up to in the Weedverse. They've been almost non-existent apart from a mention in one story or another. Celestia was part of that conversation, so I think it was The Perilous Romance of Swans. I notice they're tagged in The Mask Makes the Pony, so I guess I have another reason to get around to that one.
Not entirely sure what they're doing in Griffonstone, though. Teaching assistants, I presume? Or maybe they're trying to understand cutie marks better by spending time in a culture that doesn't have them? I don't know, I'm spit-balling at this point.
7959680 School field trip maybe, so someone can keep their eyes on them?
7959721
They have their Cutie Marks, they are less dangerous now... right?
7959786 Like looking for ways to get others their cutie marks...riiigggghhhtttt!
D'aww. This is really fun story. Killed the backlog in one go. Thanks Kudzu. Top notch as always!
Interesting I know they show up later having gotten secondary education and are consolers
Bandits? I take it they were after the ponies, or the cubs, because what other valuables are there?
Doing goods deeds for the Griffins?
+2 Karma.

Well, they are holed up and defending an old mine.
There HAS to be something valuable in there, right? When they say they ain't got nothing, they're LYING! Let's kill them and find out what they got, it must be good if they've gone through this much trouble to protect it!
7959676
The disjointed sensation of expecting an echo and finding only silence?
7960444
So, they holed up in a mine to be safe from things like bandits. Which drew in bandits. Which they fend off. Which draws more bandits, et cetera, et cetera. Who is going to break that cycle?

**Shrugs**
It's paradoxical.
You know, unless a bunch a migrants come (which they won't) they will eventually have to leave that place and let it wither away.
That is truth, and it makes me sad.
This chapter is a mix of heartwarming and depressing, not found that much.
While the cubs are certainly worth protecting though to bandits they aren't wort a bullet. I wonder what the story is behind Cherrilee and the CMC being in Griffonstone. Maybe I missed something, forgotten it, or its tale not yet told really hope its not anotehr Noodle incident
I feel I should get this out before we get much farther, but I really like Blueblood now. I already did, mind you, but I especially like his cunning and caring personality more after how he handled Tarnish and the whole Manehatten incident. Also, an awful lot happened in the last year, didn't it?
So, the most depressing thing about the whole Manehatten incident is that I cannot come up with a clear conclusion on what the 'correct' course of action would be. My gut tells me that Tarnish and co. shouldn't be punished for being attacked, but if nothing else the Weedverse has been trying to get me to think beyond such things. A lot of ponies got hurt or had a lot of their property destroyed. The details are left vague, but there were 500,000 bits worth of property damage and I think 131 ponies killed. Ponies are going to be angry about this, and want justice done. Not doing so would likely result in a number of ponies losing faith in the Crown, or even turning against it. Let's not forget that we're just a few years away from the Equalists rising in force. If Tarnish and co., who are wrongly deemed responsible, are let go without any repercussions, that could've bolstered their numbers considerably. Granted, I'm saying this with benefit of hindsight, but the point stands.
I like including relevant quotes.
Whether they deserve it or not, Tarnish and co. have been made the target of the victims' ire. Allowing him to take the hit to sate them could be deemed a necessary evil for the greater good. I remember something similar happening in Tengen Toppa Gurran Lagann. However, you could also make a reasonable case that allowing Tarnish and co. off the hook is for the greater good. They are active heroes. They do a lot of incredible things and save or at least help an incalculable amount of ponies. In Tarnish's case, he's capable of doing things that literally no other pony can. His value to the Crown and to Equestria at large is immeasurable! It wouldn't really be a stretch to suggest that collateral damage be overlooked for the sake allowing the heroes to do their jobs. Needs of the many and all that. Except that just leads to the problem stated above.
Incidentally, this is why I never really accept "the greater good" as a valid argument. You can use it to justify nearly anything. Adolf Hitler justified the Holocaust by claiming it was for the greater good. I hate to use the obvious example, but it's the obvious example for a reason.
Also, since I've already brought up FF7 once, I'd like to point out that using scapegoats since you can't punish the people actually responsible is something that Shinra did. Granted, the comparison is imperfect since Shinra's scapegoats were known terrorists.
Does everyone see why I'm having trouble with this? There is really no good answer to this situation. Any resolution would come with a boatload of problems, very serious problems with serious ramifications.
Enter Blueblood.
He effectively allows the citizens of Manehatten the catharsis they desire while allowing Tarnish and co. to continue their work unimpeded by the shackles of crippling debt. And by doing this under the table, he allows Celestia plausible deniability. Everybody wins as best they can. Of course, there are still problems with this. This kind of shady dealing seems fine here, but once you start a precedent, it becomes easy to justify doing it for increasingly questionable situations. And of course, if the public ever found out about this it would be a nightmare. It would only serve to convince a great number of citizens that the government is corrupt, helping themselves and their own and not caring who gets hurt in the process.
So, after all that rambling, I still can't come up with a good solution for this situation. But at least, for now, I'm glad that Blueblood came in to provide one that came pretty close. There's probably a better and more coherent way to wrap this all up, but it's 2am and I'm tired. If this post weaves back and forth incomprehensibly, it's only because it mirrors my own thought process on the matter. God, life sucks sometimes.

The first bill was over 200,000 bits, and more are coming. Blueblood was trying to give Tarnish some breathing room.
Blueblood and Tarnish are actually mirrors of one another, as they are the epitome of 'good does not mean nice.' The other good guys sort of talk about them in hushed tones. They're easy to condemn when everything is bright and sunny, but when things go sour, they're the first ponies you call when real trouble arrives.
7962420
That makes more sense actually. I thought 500,000 seemed a little low...
I forgot to mention liking Blueblood for the whole "don't refer to ponies as assets" thing in Sumac's story. Whether he's objectively right or not, the immortal ponies running the show need someone around to remind them of this. Make sure they don't become too detached and whatnot.
In any case, I really like Tarnish and Blueblood. My sleep deprived mind hopes that they become and action duo, complete with theme song. In twelve hours, I imagine that my desire will have faded significantly.
such a sweet chapter ,, funny as i am putting together for a Christmas part right now.
