Damn it. This is why you always bring 2 Healers for this kinda raid, that way if one is taken out of commission you always have another one to fall back on.
I may or may not be a healer in an MMO so I may or may not take this kinda situation very seriously.
Well, this is worrisome. The only issue, is that this is set in the past for what stories you already have going on. So it makes it feel less tense.
Poor Daring Doo.
Danged Cliff hangers
Hope you got it sorted OK, Can't put two words together coherently in that condition myself. (1.5 mmol/l or lower)
Daring should have had Vinyl put a shield spell outside the hole like a turret before looking out, hindsight is was a wonderful thing?.
Ooooh no~
Though damn Dashie, good form.
And this, people, is why you don't peek. Don't be that guy in a comp game.
Are you okay tho kudz, I hear low blood sugar is quite stressful.
8008091 Well Goddammit. Now that this comment exists, the Laws of Murphy dictate that some sort of wobbly-wobbly, time-wimey BS is about to be pulled, and everything we know about the future as pertains to this will be undone. Congratulations, friend. You killed Daring Do. Ahuizotl would be proud.
Aaaand one down, possibly out of action for days/weeks, while another with a concussion. Things are starting to look grim.
The automatons are firing paintballs, right?
Oh no, things just keep getting worse, and I can't even remember if Daring Do was mentioned in Twilight's School...
Although I can see Daring Do dying in some Celestia forsaken wasteland surrounded by acquaintances. I believe there are a couple of things that will prevent such unfortunate circumstances from occuring, firstly, Plot Armor; secondly, Tarnished Teapot.
8008091 that's my only saving grace. Somehow or another we know she survives. All of them do. I'm so thankful for that too, because I'd be crying right now and I'm not even ashamed to admit it. The thrill is in the journey not the destination.
Oh crap, that's a real cliffhanger. DD's either dead, or severely wounded.
Very well done.
8008592 "The thrill is in the journey not the destination" Yeah, but if you know the destination it makes the journey less thrilling. I'd rather be feeling really worried right now, but instead I know what is going to happen in the very end.
8008706
This is more about character growth than anything else.
How did Tarnished Teapot go from being the brash, over-confident, cocky, and sometimes screw up that we see early on to the near-recluse paranoid ultra-cautious pony we see in When Consequences Come Home?
What changed him? What made him cautious and careful? What made him realise that he is not young and immortal? What made him get wise?
...we know Tarnish, Dash and Vinyl make it. We've seen them all at later points in the continuity.
...I don't remember if we've seen Daring. And now I'm afraid.
Minor edit suggestion, a double-quote that's found its way into the middle of some dialog:
“Oh, that’s mean, just plain mean, Miss Yearling. “I think you could do with more spotted dick in your life.”
“Oh, that’s mean, just plain mean, Miss Yearling. I think you could do with more spotted dick in your life.”
I'm kind of surprised, but grateful, that the automaton didn't just go full auto and swiss cheese the soft cover that they're hiding behind. >.<
8008771
They don't have full auto... it takes about ten seconds to build up a charge.
Very nice cliff hanger! But do keep an eye on yourself, sir, else you might find yourself as a guinea pig for some of my sweets experiments :P
So, we know that Daring Do survives, somehow. That's a relief.
Rainbow Dash can take an automaton one-on-one. Nice.
...There is no point in the future in which they'll be able to come back and bury those bodies, is there? That is deeply sad.
I honestly remember Tarnish only being in the last little bit of When Consequences Come Home. Of course, I'm pretty sure I read that before I read The Weed, so any changes in personality would have been completely lost on me.
8008918
Ah, but think of the descriptions of the defenses on Tarnish's home. It's a fortress designed to keep things out.
8008717 I understand, it's just that personally I love it when you are not even sure the main character will survive because of how willing the author is to kill people off. But, that's not really your style and I respect that. Sorry for complaining, I pretty much only read your stories on this website, and if it hadn't been for you I probably would have left this site by now.
8008935
I remember that part even less, truthfully. Again, at the time, Tarnish and co. meant very little to me, so having a fortress home wouldn't have meant very much. I suppose that story might be worth a reread. It's not very long, so I suppose I can deal with Velvet for the duration.
I wonder how Tarnish will handle Pebble's adventurous streak as she gets older. Especially with as much time as she spends with Sumac, whose desire to experiment tends to override his self-preservation instincts, at least for now. A young Sumac and Pebble both showed interest in Skyreach. I wonder if that'll be a passing fancy, or something they'll become determined to visit one day.
More to the point, I wonder what role Skyreach will play in the future. Obviously, I have no way of knowing now, but somehow I suspect you wouldn't dedicate this much time to Skyreach if it wasn't going to be important later.
8008981
Spoiler!
Because of Twilight's blistering defense of Sumac and his wishes, Sumac grows up to become a mortician and part time inventor. When he does go on adventures, it is because he wants to, not because he has to.
8008774
Ahhh... hopefully the crew will be able to exploit that.
8008995
I remember you posting that spoiler back in Fantastic Foals. Honestly, it's such a relief to know that something goes right with this kid's life.
Of course, you've cleverly told me nothing about Skyreach in the future, or whether or not Sumac will have anything to do with it. Which is fine by me. I look forward to finding out the answers in time. Though I suppose this is the kind of place he'd have a hard time going to just because he feels like it.
You know, I've been thinking a bit more about Sumac's situation following Flam's attempted kidnapping. No, this won't be me rambling about Flam, I'm done with that. I'm more curious about Belladonna right now. See, one of the reasons I didn't know what to think of Flam when he showed up is because Big Mac lied to Sumac, and by extension the reader, about what Flam did while on the run. He led us to believe that Sumac's parents maybe did care about him in some way. I'm not criticizing him for that, mind you. You don't tell a five year-old that his parents hate him. The only issue that might come up is that this runs contrary to Trixie's 'life without illusions' approach.
Sumac is a rather bright child. He'll probably realize that he was misled about his father, and might possibly ask, if not demand to know more about his mother. The only downside to having several parental figures is disagreements on how to raise the child. What happens if Trixie and the Apples come into serious conflict on whether or not Sumac should be aware of something? I can see it being a single heated argument, or I can see it becoming a whole big thing that drags on for a bit. I seriously don't know, and that's the joy of finding out, isn't it?
I understand Celestia's viewpoint in keeping him out of the loop, but after the Flam incident, I feel that Sumac should at least be made aware that Belladonna is out there and is dangerous. If only because he's smart enough to figure it out himself.
I realize that I just spent quite a bit of time talking about Sumac in a story that has nothing to do with him. I hope that's not a problem.
8008539 I think in the very first post introducing the Weedverse Kudzu said something about not ever killing off any main characters. They would face terrible troubles but they wouldn't die.
8009090 Having looked over the message of the Weed Verse Group,
I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Oh shit! She is going to be down for the count on being capable of labor. Being shot fucking sucks!

She's chocolate brown, like her daddy, but she has her mother's mane.

I will personally recommend reading The Perilous Romance of Swans for that one. We get a good look at the government from Celestia's eyes in that one. Politics are often complicated, especially in a monarchy (what do you call one with four princesses?) that more closely resembles modern western society. Acting rashly with little care for the consequences is what causes groups like the Equalists to gain more members.
The fact that the Manehatten incident has been left vague makes it harder to reach a concrete conclusion on it. I made a whole big post on how frustrating the whole thing was. I do that sometimes.
Anyway, on an unrelated topic, Kudzu, I was doing some more thinking. As of the end of Venemus Iocus, Tarnish was not the biggest fan of machines, especially the automatons. Let's narrow that down further to the ancient, lost technology that has spent more time trying to kill him than anything else. It occurs to me that Sumac, as a natural tinkerer, might become fascinated with this same lost technology. If such a thing comes to pass, I wonder how it will affect the relationship between the two?
Obviously, I'm not really looking for answers. Lately, I've just been thinking about how these characters might play off each other in certain situations. Even if I'm way off base, I am just super interested in watching these characters bounce off of each other. The possibilities are just so fascinating.
