Day +7: The Endeavor had to turn back because Tarnish forgot the salsa.
I love this extensive prologue. Nothing like a well set-up story.
Any plans at how long the story itself is going to be?

Maybe up to a half a million words? Maybe? Maybe 300k?
Reading the most recent chapter of Princess Twilight Sparkle and the Quesadilla Conquest, going to the front page, and then seeing that this has just been posted. Life it good.
7942730 Plus he forgot to get more cobras and his ass shooting gun.
Tarnish, you're right, this is going to be great. Why, just imagine the wierd reaming out that Maud is going to give you when you get home after all she has to make sure that all of your faculties are in working order.
Well, we have some evidence of raw magic being involved with the key, and we know it is something that can harm just about any known creature, including Dragons. That factors out raw magic as the only source of danger, as Spike was just fine when air-dropped into the Mt. Maud blast radius back in The Weed.
I see there being potential for it to be very easy to get into Skyreach but very difficult to get back out. Perhaps something has been sealed within that is too dangerous to let out, trapping any would-be explorers inside with it?
Last theory for now is that Skyreach is a lost city of alicorns, not pegasi, giving Celestia some form of personal connection to it.
Just spitballing for the most part here.

Eventually, Tarnish becomes the soft spoken, cautious pony that we see later on. But for now, we Tarnish during his 'Good Guy Don't Mean Nice Guy' phase of life.
I think I can understand how you had trouble fitting at all into one chapter.
Considering the story is literally already at 10,000+ words and the prologue isn't even done.
I feel this story is gonna be a doozie.
Interesting chapter Tarnished might want to triple check his saddle bags maybe he has an asp or speckled band in there .
Like how that snake was handled. Maybe that needs to be a check for returning adventurers the emptying of the saddle bags to ensure they aren't carrying anything dangerous they accidently picked up. I have the nasty feeling a corbra isn't the first time something like that was found in Tarnished'so saddlebags it Daring Doos either
So that's what those hats are called! Something so generally drab to go with Rainbow's color pallette seems like a cool look to me.
I can totally picture Limestone with her own danger noodle.
Breaking out the prologue into chunks keeps the pacing at a good clip while allowing exposition and foreshadowing to take place. If you started this more media res with the quartet on a ship already on the way to Skyreach there would be either a lot of backtracking or some information missing. I think this format will work to create a slower increase in tension and action that should hopefully result in a more satisfying payoff.
7942788 No the logical thing is to keep them out as well. Logically is something can get in, it can get out
How likely are we to get a one shot story focusing on Limestone and Noodle?
7942961 Consider the lowly crab-trap, a device designed specifically to lure something in and the make it nigh impossible for it to escape.
The logic behind it to me is that if anyone was curious enough to risk going to Skyreach they would need to be kept contained to keep the secrets contained. Their bodies, their memories, everything would need to be kept from getting out or providing any clues.

And your intelligent analysis is spot on, which leads us to the question, "How does Celestia know what she knows?"
It is a very powerful question, how did the wily white alicorn not get caught in the crab trap?
You know, it just occurred to me recently that the whole "bad thing with good intentions" that Tarnish did, as mentioned in Fantastic Foals might have something to do with Skyreach. That Vinyl will be there furthers my suspicions on the matter.

7942999 If Skyreach is a trap then that is logical, if its a prison or fortress not so logical. We know it was a town/ fortress originally so people would need to come and go. Prisons not only function to keep prisoners in but keep anyone that might want to release the prisoners out. Fortresses exist to defend the area around them as well as protect those defenders inside
7942999 This is where I got thinking about it being an alicorn city, not a pegasus city, and that alicorn magic is involved in getting back out. For most of the past 1000 years there was only one alicorn in existence, giving Celestia the advantage in keeping it hidden. With four more it is a lot more susceptible than it once was, and it would explain why Celestia feels that there is absolutely no hope of four exceptional ponies escaping. It's not a matter of skill, but of magic that they cannot tap into.
But who knows, I could be wholly wrong. I'm excited to find out in the long run! I'm finally almost caught up on this whole dratted, wonderful 'verse, just a few chapters with Mister Nicker to go.
This almost feels like an Indiana Jones movie. I can't wait for when the actual story begins.
They would be taken as a serious threat in New Zealand.

Prologue = Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed.
Hope it doesn't get away from you?
"Hissy- Kisses?!"
Theory:Skyreach is under extreme temporal dilation. Those trapped inside the field have had not enough time to examine the field or make their escape. The Key does not disable the field, it allows the holder to switch between real time and Skyreach time.
I think that's supposed to be "compliment".
Though I guess bluey does complement the group as well
Theory as I blaze through the chapters:
Given the story image, as well as what I know of and can guess about the timeline, I'm guessing the Skyreach pegasi created the windigoes, and the means by which they did so was horrible. Probably accidental as well, since they don't seem to be around anymore.
