Another deep chapter with interesting insghts to Celestia that I can't disagree with. Though there are times if Celestia would tell a little more people might listen.
As Tarnished said by doing is the only way they will listen and learn, but then how to prevent those secrets from getting into the wrong ears, There is always the remote chance someone might succeed
They've got rail guns!?
That's always the risk with a feel good day, it can turn into a reflective day, and those are certainly heavy.
"I’m putting those deep, throbbing bass notes on my next dance mix. See if I don’t."
This went over my head, I'm sorry to say. Could you please explain or point me to where I can find the answer I seek?
So, electromagnetic cannons. The fact that they are puzzled by them shows that in all their encounters with the automatons before, they haven't seen ones this technologically advances, and that is fantastic foreshadowing for the dangers they may face the closer they get to Skyreach. If these ones are only the scouts and the like, what might some of the even more advanced automatons be equipped with?
The rest of the chapter was yet again, well crafted and I cannot wait for the next installment!

Vinyl is going to transform pegasus farts into music.
7988331
Ooooooooooooooooh okay lol I should've got that but oh well. Thanks!
So, they're railguns.
No doubt the technology was 'borrowed' from another when and where.
7988352
No. It wasn't.
7988331 We've already seen Vinyl has tried to weaponize music several times. Now how many times has she tried it without Sumac since those are the attempts we know something about
I love how jam packed full of meaning that authors note is.
As terrible as their situation is, they only have themselves to blame for being stuck there. Celestia warned them clearly not to go, that no one has ever returned, and that it would only cause a fracturing of the three tribes.
After that first automaton, it's obvious that only a Pegasus from a city like cloudsdale can claim bloodline purity, and who knows what it would have done had Rainbow Dash been pure.
I feel for them, especially Tarnish with his little family, but they chose not to listen.
Theoretically our motley crew have an advantage that no others have seem to have had (at least none that we know of yet) - they know how to survive! They've got a safe cave, they know what they are up against, they've got supplies, and they've got brains. So far we haven't seen that combination in the ones who crashed before them. Add to that Mr. Walking Force Of Nature has already won the first round of combat against the automatons and that's really impressive! And with the mirror (granted they haven't actually tried it yet) they should be able to talk to ponies back home for support and ideas!
At some point soon they need to try and get out of that cave and explore and see what they can find and get them closer to Skyreach. But the weather will be a big opponent then, but I think they can deal with that.
It ain't gonna be easy, but we know they can do it!
7988755
You don't have any idea what you are talking about.
7988275
Yeah. Celestia could have elaborated beyond "Its a bad place" and then sitting back. She knew they were going to go, could have at least tried to prepare them in some way.
I think Celestia's picked up a bit of a melodramatic fatalistic streak over the years.
7989953
Be careful with those assumptions.
7989957
All right. Although mourning someone while they're still in the room is a bit melodramatic.
7990175
But there is a very good reason for it.
I made this assumption an easy to reach one for a reason. I wanted people to gravitate towards it, to be drawn to it.
...Rail gun?
7990186
I hate to sound like a jerk, but it kinda undermines the intent if you flat-out tell people not to lean towards the assumption the story wants them to. ...And now I feel like a jerk. Can we pretend that there's a tactful way to say this, and that I said it like that?
I'm trying to reserve judgement. When a story is centered around a giant secret, you can't really make any final conclusions until you learn the secret to contextualize everything. Even so, I find myself a bit frustrated with Celestia, as I mentioned earlier. Would it really have killed her to say flying an airship into the area will cause it to crash? Of course, I don't know if she knew that. There's also the theory I mentioned before, that this is the least dangerous and thus the most likely to survive in part of Skyreach. Again, I can't really know until the story's over. I'm not really brooding over this though. It's not like certain other characters whom shall remain nameless.
This chapter briefly touched on something I'd been curious about. Rainbow Dash, at least at first, feels like a really random addition. The only reason I'm not surprised is because other stories have mentioned it. Who is Tarnish and Vinyl to her? Who is she to them? At what point did they become friends and then comrades?
One thing that kinda bugged me about The Weed is that we never saw the rest of Ponyville react to Tarnish. Did they care that he got banished? No one seemed too put out when he showed back up. And then there's the stuff we couldn't see because of the perspective the story was told from. What about Twilight's friends? How did they feel about what I assume was her first official banishment? (Forgive me if that assumption is incorrect.) Did they agree? Did they disagree? This was around the time period before the Mane 6 started to drift apart (unless that's different in the Weedverse), so I was always curious about that? How about Spike, who was closer and more privy to Twilight's private emotions than anyone else? Though at least for him, I can see him putting it all behind him once it was resolved. He doesn't seem to linger on the past very much, I don't think.
I am kinda hoping that Rainbow Dash being a constant character will bring a bit of insight into this. Thought mostly just the part about Rainbow's relation to the rest of the group. The other stuff is interesting, but I won't gripe if I don't get it. That's the thing about well-written characters: When something happens to one of them, you think about how it affects those closest to them. But really, not every single detail needs to be spelled out. I'm okay with leaving some of the less important stuff to my imagination.
7990659
You didn't see those reactions because the protagonist wasn't in a place where he could witness them. Mostly because he was banished.
7990665
...I did mention that. It was in the middle of a big paragraph, but I did mention it.
Tarnish's monologue is very deep. And heavy, but lighter than Celestia, if only just.
See, this... inner conflict for Tarnish is something I love to read. I mean, he screwed up by going, arguably, and it's not like his hand was forced, but it also doesn't mean he still thinks it was wrong? And he wants to relate to Celestia but he also doesn't want to tell her she's right...
It reads very convincingly like someone who is trying to make sense of his feelings and interpret them as something that helps reinforce his esteem and life outlook, instead of destroy them.
Okay, I get that Princess Celestia is incredibly wise and fantastically powerful in the Weedverse, BUT... the show ruins the illusion for me completely. Every time I see a Princess all I can think of is another kidnapping victim. For all of her eons of age and centuries of combat experience, Celestia seems to be one of the most ineffective ponies to ever live. Weedverse Celestia is a massive upgrade, but she has no foresight, unlike Weed!Cadence. Cadence seems to plan ahead more effectively than Celestia or Luna. Princess Celestia is probably less understanding of her ponies than Luna is, and I have a simple theory as to why: Celestia feels there is nothing to learn any longer. Twilight, Cadence, and Luna are all engaged intimately with the populace or with current events (since Luna is a bit shy), while Celestia pours over documents and snuggles the adorable fluffy clown that is Gosling.
tl;dr I really just don't like Celestia in any medium except fan art. Princess is a downgrade. INFINITE COSMIC POWER, itty bitty thinking space.
P.S.– This is why you ask questions as a child in class. You expect a goddamn answer.
"Celestia, why should I not go to Skyreach right the fuck now?"
"Because you will die a horrible fucking death and your soul will forever be trapped by forces you cannot even comprehend. Later, idiot, have fun getting pumped full of holes and shit."
Hmmm... Sprouts and cheese...
I really should make sprouts in curry cream sauce again some time. So tasty....
Also high in sulfur. Good thing I don't live in a cave that's been sealed against the cold. That would blow.
So many people really don't understand how Kudz writes Celestia, which has time and again fulfilled my nebulous, intuitively-based and stringent standards for a good Celestia. There's more to almost anything and anyone than we are shown in the story, some basic deductive reasoning is required here and excusing emotionality for logical thinking, even when it comes to using logic to understand the emotions of the characters. A healthy understanding of what a leadership position entails certainly doesn't hurt, either...
Is this a rail gun? It sounds like a rail gun.
Pretty sure it's some type of rail gun. Yes, rail guns are terribly loud, however there might be some sort of sound muffler on it, because magic...
That was very deep and profound look of Princess Celestia and her role in Weedverse Equestria. Fascinating indeed!
