I love this fick keep em coming
Shame that it's rated mature it would have exploded in popularity othervise
I'm merely a science nerd, but, even if you contain the water vapor, I don't think it's possible to separate oxygen and hydrogen using heat since heat is what causes them to combine. (Electrolysis works because you're injecting energy without exceeding the auto-ignition temperature.)
Hollywood myth. Gasoline only explodes when compressed to pressures a gas tank is not built to maintain. (That's one reason engine blocks are much sturdier than gas tanks) In fact, you can't even ignite gasoline in the tank because there's too much gasoline vapour and not enough oxygen. (And spilled gasoline won't even maintain a flame if you give it time for the layer of vapour above it to dissipate.)
What you see in movies is the gasoline being vaporized into the air, creating a dramatic fireball. The Hollywood effect is achieved when they put several jugs of gasoline wrapped in detonation cord (basically explosive rope) inside the car.
In real life, it's almost impossible to replicate that effect. Rear-ending a Ford Pinto, which had the gas tank on the back, caused tons of lawsuits over fuel tank fires.
The Mythbusters tried to replicate a cinematic explosion but ended up having to take a gas tank out of a car so the vehicle's frame wouldn't absorb the impact (gas tanks are intentionally positioned so applying concentrated force is as difficult as possible), then put a large box of matches on top of it to provide a spark for ignition, and then drop a giant weight on it to cause the gas to spray out into a cloud of vapor which could then be ignited into a fireball by the spark from the matches. (And, even then, the gas isn't really exploding... It's just a cloud of fuel vapor burning very rapidly.)
I just thought of a tactic for dealing with the bandits.
Trojan horse
Have a team traveling down the road disguised as merchants. Apparently a standard amount of merchants, but instead of cargo under a tarp covering the carts, have a bunch of pegusii/unicorns/Celestia.
Yeah. Trying to teach them internal combustion engines.... you might as well teach them about rocket engines... because neither of them are going to happen for a long, long, time. (You need metalwork with mm tolerances and high temperature rubber seals, high temp stable lubricating oil)
Lol. Max best changeling.
Mac OS a bad influence but fun
Yeah, this is pretty good for a transformed HiE story.
7383059 Not honourable, Celestia would object like heck. She kinda seems like the one who would chose honor rather than victory.
Also it's a bit dangerous, because if the bandits learn this tactic, they might just cut down every merchant on the road just to be safe. Perfidy is not a serious war crime for no reason.
7383120
Perfidy deals with war.
Cops commit perfidy allot. Ever heard of a plain cloths cop? Or a cop running a speed trap in an unmarked car? Or where a cop pretends to be a drug buyer?
Also....
That law wasn't put in place until 1977... and to be honest.... it is rarely followed. (Seriously, the Palistine conflict alone, let alone Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, etc, etc. Car bombs and suicide bombers are both acts of perfidy)
History of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_merchantman
7383183 Still consider it a bad idea if used constantly. Bandits can just slaughter everyone preemptively.
7383071 making a tube boiler though shouldn't be too hard, though the first few generation might be a tad bit unsafe until they developed their own safety systems
Max is best bug-pony!
Next time
Heated hate sex after a very intense mock fight between novices
Both pumping with adrenaline and sweat musking up the air between them, it'll be intense
7383171 you have given after each chapter update. If it does not bother you may I ask, why?
7383120
I'd say whether it's a good idea or not depends on the sort of bandits they're dealing with. If they're already cutting down every merchant they rob there's no reason not to use whatever method is most effective, but if they're the type to let go those who don't put up a fight then Equestria doesn't want to use tactics that could discourage that, even as they're working to wipe them out.
7383754 To be honest, as an idea I find it pretty good (fair fight is for idiots), but if word spreads, it might endanger others in the long run. Make patrols, create fake stories about bandits being captured and executed and make everyone believe that banditry is just not worth it.
Or, go with the norwegian method amd give them a chance of a new life, for example as a peronal army/entourage/whatever for Max. Most bandits turn to killing because of needs, if you can help them, you'll have a ridiculously loyal base you can depend on.
Ohhhhh.....
I just realized some future knowledge he should reveal.
Tierek
Sombra and the Crystal Empire.
7383002
Agreed, but if Max isn't a science nerd he might not actually know this.
7383702 SURE! Mainly I liked the chapter and i'm normally to lazy to wright words so I just Pinkie Pie Smile attack with a post! Thats about it really, And I reallllllly like your story so keep it up!
7383071 They have magic, and can cheat quite a bit. Even if they have to reinforce the engine, that's probably less caster effort than creating a purely magical engine, so they won't run into as severe of a unicorn bottleneck. They might even do a mix of pure-magic and metal-magic hybrid engines for a while, if their metalwork becomes a bottleneck for the latter.
I am entirely ok with this version of luna and celestia.
Well done capturing the essence of sibling opportunity jabs!!!
7383936
Gears.
Differential
Cars are pretty far up on the tech tree.
When people are living in shacks, trying to re-invent a car that only the queen and a few nobels can afford....
Yeah.
We're talking about a tech level that you might know a much better loom design.
Water wheels and windmills would be great technical advances.
Grind grain, pump water (either with a pump, water wheel, or buckets on a rope design), power drills, looms, lathes, etc... have all been powered by water historically.
Or really improve construction by remembering the recipe for concrete. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_concrete
7383936
The mm tolernces and seals are so that gasses can't escape around the pistons. Otherwise there's no power.
Electrical engines are much, much easier to create.
7384022 um...I'm not saying they can build a mechanical car engine now, just that they don't necessarily need their metalwork to get as good as it needs to be IRL.
In the more immediate future, they'll probably be better off with a pure-magic version (See: luna's musing's about one in a previous chapter). It probably won't ever be mass-producible (spellcaster bottlenecks), but it might be bulk-producible, such that most merchants can afford one.
7384055 what part of "they have magic and can cheat a bit" do you not understand?
7383838
The "reality is stranger than fiction" principle applies here. (Reality is stranger than fiction because readers never forget there's a human mind and a purpose behind each work of fiction and cut fiction less slack than reality.)
A piece of fiction is a carefully woven tapestry and should have no loose threads. Characters can't just be randomly misinformed unless it's significant to the story, in which case, it requires a certain amount of framing to convince readers that, yes, the author isn't really that misinformed.
In this case, the prior chapters and the rest of this chapter build Max up as reasonably intelligent and well-educated, which means that mistakes like that, which stick out as exceptional and are made without the writing even hinting at any purpose to making them, give the impression that the author really believes that to be true.
As for Max not being a science nerd, the "water -> oxygen/hydrogen" thing should be obviously wrong to anyone with even a Grade 9 science education (or just knowledge of the Hindenburg disaster) who takes a minute or two to think it over and realize they're claiming heat can cause hydrogen to both burn and "un-burn". (Electrolysis works by injecting energy without significant heat)
Here's a thought, going with the notion that Max's insect exoskeleton can follow the same physical logic of insects, like say an ant lifting objects many times their body's weight and size. Max would represent how a "Relatively nourished" changeling is capable of, in this case a royal of sufficient satiety, though of course he hasn't explored in full, the capabilities his new fresh body.
I'm saying fresh because even if Discord transmogrified Max's old body, that's magically restructuring him down to his DNA and recycling then rebuilding cells. Max is in a fully(?) formed adult body that is as new as a newborn babe, had his mana reservoir distended and shaped to accommodate the "sliver" of Discord's immense power, meaning that from this point on his growth potential can overlap a naturally mature royal. We don't even know if he can do things like pouring magic into his shell to increase its hardness or raise his strength to even greater lengths or specify transformations to parts of the shell, as either additions/enhancements like spikes, carry compartments, extra shell to giving the claws, weaponry and olfactory senses of a predator he's managed to copy. Assuming changeling transformations are more physical than illusory and none have thought of such combinations due the vast difference between our education and level of imagination than them.
As a fresh vessel with a fortuitous stat build, Max can very well grow into a new power to influence the timeline.
7384566
That is literally because they are tiny. Smaller creatures have a better strength to mass ratio than larger creatures.
7384245
The thing is... even a thousand years in their future. They don't have "Cast a spell on a regular cart and any pony can control it for weeks on it's own spell". They have trains... they have carts. But no stand alone magic carts. The only one shown was the Flim Flams and it was continully powered by a Unicorn. Aka, a Unicorn had to regullarly power the spell to keep it moving.
So the critical component, an artificial means of gathering magical energy to power a spell, doesn't appear to exist 1000 years latter in the timeline.
Edit:
Deleted stuff.... It's late at night... I need to get sleep.
7384888 Well we are talking about a physique that subsists on emotions, and could, quite frankly, be constructed of said emotions than actual physical matter...
Like how some would view magic as an energy capable of manifesting imagination into reality, we could even say Max's body is merely thought energy filling a "mold" Discord shaped into a Changeling King and led Max to believe and ingrain himself to accept such form is real and his, "solidifying" it when the deadline (mold) is removed. An otherwise formless being of energy that can assume physical form of whatever it wants, like one would with a dream. Funny, seeing how a changeling looks scary to this universe's natives, you'd think they're actually walking nightmares... HOLY SHIT HE'S ACTUALLY THE NIGHTMA- I'm just kidding.
But it'd be interesting.
7384923 Your objections are invalid: Tank's propeller is a thing. It's enchantment is long-lasting, and can be activated/deactivated by a non-unicorn. It also provides mechanical propulsion (and possible weight-reducing spells). It only lacks for sheer scale, which brings us back to "yes, equestria can make magic powered cars, the only question is whether they will ever be practical."
Now, developing a physical energy->magic energy transformer...eh, that's up to the author. There are vague hints in canon that they have some of those things running in the background, but no hard proof.
7383002 I don't science well while playing minecraft, sorry. I'll change the first, but the second is a common misconception. I only remembered the mythbusters when you mentioned it, and Max doesn't have access to the internet to double check his facts. The second mistake is staying, the first will be reworded.
7385416
They both look fine now. (As long as the misconception doesn't come across as "the author seems less educated than the character they're trying to play", it's usually fine.)
The rest of the chapter was excellent all along, as usual. :)
Luna sure is adventurous, wanting to try new things and all...
7385836 I like to think that half of it is curiosity, and half of it is getting under Celestia's skin.
I just had an idea. So, the Crystal Empire is still there right? So Max can has a drinking buddy/evil teacher warlock? How cool would that be? Like Celestia would turn every stone to find (and rainbow the fuck out of) Sombra, while Max would just chill with him in secret.
7383002 You actually can, and it is done for sciencey stuff. And for whatever. If you heat water for like 2200-3000°C+, it will fall apart. They will recombine quite fast (and violently) enough if not separated, but they can be taken apart. One explosion in Chernobyl happened due to this if I recall correctly (the other was due to steam pressure), but don't quote me on that.
7386026
Ahh. I knew you could get separation in something like a star, but I didn't think to check less extreme extremes. Don't do science while sleepy, kids.

Well, even if no combustion engines, he can start with Steam Engines. Heat up water with what have you, and force them through a turbine. Condenser if you want to reuse the water. There's going to be a lot of smoke if you use burning things, though. Hmm. Supercharged solar panels?
7501433
And the very earliest steam engine was in Ancient Greece (even if they didn't have a purpose for it) so it is well within their capabilities.
electricity!
7860440 True, but (using a universal translator) ask William the Conquerer if he knows what 'electricity' is, versus asking him what 'lightning' is.
William, as much as he accomplished on the field of battle, did not know a thing about voltage, currents or electrons. All he knew was that lightning shocks whatever it hit, not why or how. The same applies for 'Nightmare Moon-era' Equestria.
Ain't that the truth.
Nice story so far, good work.
Looking at you, Kirk.
That is stupid and hilarious.
Yes. Because we're weird like that.
SHOTS FIRED!
Lo que más me gusta del personaje es su actitud, es muy humano.
Oh, that was magnificently hilarious.

When Max said he would get Celestia to roll around in mud of her own free will, I didn't think it would happen in the next chapter! :o
