I don't think anyone has used this idea yet but, is Chrysalis actually the Empress? Could none of her daughters know beyond her existence or name because they are her and she, they? Maybe they were just bodies put under heavy scrutiny, the tortures and deaths of "rebellious" or failed queens, were her merely culling useless bodies as a filter to find the best one to transfer into. Crystal knows nothing because a strong personality is harder to overcome for smoother transition and she knows that the her now, would've been purged long ago as a failure. Most likely, she is the only queen that is healthy and fits the "requisite" to trigger her mother's memories to surface during her molt, like memetic memory or if the Empress still lives, will force her way through if her mind is in range. I fear it might be the former idea, she was stuck in repeating Chrysalis a few chapters back, it could have even stirred something within her.
I could be wrong though

Hmmm...nope, I guess that was just gas...l
That ending!
Never get involved with the fae Discord, it always ends poorly.
Praise the Swiss Cheese Bugpony!

perfect. Looking forward to more.
I'll admit, I've been wondering just when Discord would show himself once more. After all, it seemed unlikely that he would simply toss a wrench into the gears, and simply never come back again. His altered, seasoned perspective on events as the underdog and feeling pain, as he mentioned, brings about a change in itself. We get to see a Discord that isn't all friendship, happiness, rainbows, and controlled chaos as some portray him as in the 'present' time. Instead, he's still chaotic at his base, itching for change, but now he wants to see what the change itself yields. I almost foresee him becoming a staple character in events to come, and am extremely looking forward to seeing this conversation that's going to occur between [presumably] Discord, Celestia, Luna, Max and Crystal. Really well done, and his return coincides well with another factor.
The outing, and the consequence of ousting some of the 'nobles' who refused to actually do their jobs. This is the first, true blowback we've seen from those actions, resulting in Max being poisoned. His quick jump to action to protect Celestia was also nice, and continues to play into the role he's somewhat established himself in... a protectorate of the ponies. Namely Luna and Celestia for now, yes, but his looking out for them is turning into slowly looking out for all of the ponies flocking to the sisters as well. His development has been interesting to see as the story progresses, and I think this bump was quite good.
Thoroughly enjoyable once more. Well done, Reykan.
EDIT - Obligatory Princest is Wincest remark, as it seems like firmer ties are slowly connecting to that point. Definitely would be for it, in time.
"All knights target the resin-pouch!"
...
"ATTACK!!"
7997677 I agree that Discord's return and his surprisingly peaceful approach has brought interest in speculation to what may come. He clearly wishes not to disturb what is happening and has gone to lengths to ensure it keeps going, seeing as change is happening with his influence by merely adding an unknown into the alicorn sisters' lives, to watch as it plays out and to possibly be openly accepted to take part in shaping such changes, can set future canon events into chaos, truly exciting.
Boo
7997743 False, this is not that castle This is a third location. If they manage to fill in the area beneath the castle, there may not be a ghastly gorge in this Equestria.
The end
It was great
I am just loving this story. Great work.
Oh man, I am loving this story so much! I swear it's #1 for me. I wish I didn't have to wait for new chapters!
But I know I shouldn't be asking for you to rush, as rushing wouldn't help much for this level of story plotting. Keep up the awesome work.

...Wait, you're saying that an earthquake or landslide eventually caused the castle to fall? Because those are the only two events that can cause a chasm, that I can think of (haven't studied geography/geology in years).
Also, hopefully that was after the Sisters had moved to the Everfree Forest, because otherwise...eurgh, mass death right at the Princess's front door? Considering how superstitious medieval people were (and applying that same logic here), the Princess's Castle being destroyed would seem like a bad omen, the gods' retribution, instead of an unfortunate geological event. As a result, if ponies still lived in pre-chasm Ghastly Gorge, they would most likely abandon Celestia and Luna, and look for a new ruler that 'the gods preferred'.
...I hope that won't be a future plot point in this story; that would be disheartening. However, considering changelings live underground, wouldn't they be more sensitive to planetary crust movements? Underground shockwaves, that could signal rumbling that would likely collapse part of (if not all of) their lair? And since it's canon that earth ponies have a closer connection to the ground (being excellent farmers, compared to the other two), I'd expect them to also be able to sense ground-based shockwaves. So two out of four races living in this pre-chasm Ghastly Gorge principality (does it have an actual name, aside from "Princess's Castle"? Also, 'principality' because no kings or queens) would be able to sense earthquakes.
Wait, did I say "two out of four"? I meant "three out of five", because an alicorn is one-third beefed-up earth pony. This makes it even more unlikely ponies would still be here when Ghastly Gorge is created.
Lastly...this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the story, but instead to do with Hasbro canon; was the Everfree Forest as 'chaotic' back when Princesses Celestia and Luna lived there, as it is now (Twilight's time)? Or did Tia and Lulu manage to tame it somewhat before the latter went mad with loneliness and destroyed the castle, and Celestia left to build a new castle in a different area? We may never know...
I mean, it's likely the Forest was tamed, because otherwise pegasi wouldn't have their jobs as 'weather controllers', and it'd be dreadfully unsafe (deadly animals surrounding the castle), but AFAIK, it's not really explored in the cartoon (never read the comics). So if it was tamed, why did it revert to chaos when it was abandoned? Is the show saying that any abandoned area will eventually turn into a new Everfree Forest, where weather happens randomly and plants and animals grow without the aid of the orderly ponies? Considering how the show describes the Forest as 'scary' and 'threatening', this scenario sounds like a post-apocalypse Equestria. Hmm...

With how many soon to be problems Max has already pointed out it may be that some small problem occurs at a later date (ie minor subsidance or a cold epidemic). Once they see just how badly the "nobles" ran things and how bad things truely were they could have easily decided that it'd be easier to start again than to fix everything.
This gen of MLP is excedingly bad at back story, there is almost none until they need to invent some (which is a gold mine of possiblities for fanfic), also don't worry about the comics, or even EqG, as while official niether are cannon to the FiM universe. FiM Princess Twilight is not EqG Princess Twilight is not IDW Princess Twilight.
On the speculation of things: ponies regulate the world around them, so an area that they are not inhabiting will be subject to natural processes and seem more chaotic to them (=Discord=bad). With the FiM Everfree this would be compounded by residual magic from the Nightmare uprising (probably includes traces of dark magic in that area) and possibly the Tree of Harmony. If it is pulling Harmony/Order out of the location as it's fuel this would make the area more chaotic.
and prevent it from "healing" after Luna's fall
and explain why monsters live there but don't leave as they are like fish, with the magical composition of the Everfree being their ocean and outside of that is surface land to them
and explain why the forest is allowed to exist into modern FiM (the problem is contained and fuels their super weapon).
Yus. Discord is the Spirit of Chaos, but only in Equestria. Nice seeing it shown here that outside of his domain, there are things stronger than him.

Nothing grand like that, you forgot that a good number of chapters back, Max inquired how the Princesses built the castle, they readily admitted that they phased out most of the stone from below their very foundation, it was then Max freaked out and explained that their method would eventually lead to the collapse of the castle and surrounding area if they didn't start putting new stone to reinforce the huge cavern beneath them. Thus why the quarry is on the list of priorities, if they manage to reinforce their foundation, the castle will no longer become fated to fall and Ghastly Gorge, as Reykan has revealed to be the location in the story, will cease to exist in canon.
7997421 oh gods that's just too cute
So, Awesome.
I find it absolutely hilarious that Max is essentially creating 'Trollestia'!
eeeeee Discord… also a poison tha makes gut wounds more so. yeeugh.

A lovely trick.
Mwahaha :)
I just imagined a wonderful retort to make throw Max off.
My point here is that it'd be so amusing to see Max, who continually launches into monologues explaining something, both get interrupted and be confounded by something, even if it is idiotic.
Another weird term for a regular pegusus of the period to use. It kinda breaks immersion, hearing these people-some who like to use leeches in a very serious, old timey and useless sense use something like "organic" absolutely seriously and knowing of what it means.
Cuando ara evolución. Necesita es más recistencia ahora
Wow. It's really kinda startling to see just how much the characters have changed, and it's nice too. Like Discord, he's just changed, learned, and now he's believably different, just as the rest of them are. And the bits of humor are appreciated.
So discord in this universe is kamen rider decade huh, neat.

note to self: actally watch kamen rider so i know what people are talking about
So is this a reference to something specifically or just an interesting idea for the multiverse theory?
Discord finally met the phrase (there's always a bigger fish)
This is the first discord I read that goes to the multiverse and returns with notable damage
