Luna is really getting her mileage out of him...
I like two-fers... \:)
Does me ole eyes good to see an update. Been a very slow month for'em it has.
Great chapter, nice to see family healing wounds.
Thanks to your story I feel better but I still feel immensely shitty, pls keep up the good work and write more updates in this week to distract me horrors of linear estimation, statistics and sparsity analysis, pls help.
bugponies for the win
It took me some time to actually nail down correctly what I felt off in your stories. The fact that there are very few arguments, or just general back and forths. A lot of times Max just goes into a monologe without breaking it up and nobody really contests what he says in the end. Like if the guards just pile up and try to off him, a single sentence shouldn't quiet them. Stop, yes, but they could've still stay hostile and say he's just a beast and Luna would be grateful in the end, or he's just mind-contolling them (emotion-eating) or something.
Now don't get this the wrong way, you are in my only three watched authors for a reason, but thought I'd mention this.
Also, please use a bloody Metric-ish system if Raspuling decides to estabilish a scientific community. The actual size of the measured thing might be whatever (like, I dunno, Hooves to wingbeats for distance or something), but the change between larger measurements should still be a power of ten. It's used everywhere for a reason, and makes calculations much-much more easier.
P.s. Batpones. We need guards creeping out by them, while Max would just hug the crap out of one, cus oh, my god, so cute, fluffy ears and cat-eyes and cool wings)
7443676
That assumes Ponies use a base-10 counting system. If they use a base-4 counting system, then they'd want to use powers of four for their Metric.
7443968 That works too. Albeit there is time to slowly change everything into familiar territory for Max. He'ss working with a mostly blank slate I woud assume.
7444004
Well, I hope he doesn't push for base-10 if it's not already in use. base-12 is a much more practical choice, since it has 2, 2, and 3 as factors. (Which, for convenient division, also makes it an improved superset of the base-4 that they could already be using.)
That's actually why a day has 24 hours, 60 minutes, and 60 seconds. The babylonians were well aware of the benefits of having many factors for your base and used a base-60 counting system to take advantage of that.
7444020 Didn't they use a base 6 and just used multiplications?
7444120
Not quite. They inherited their system from the Sumerians and here's how it worked:
7444131 That's pretty cool. Though counting with so long numbers must've been a joy. Or at least it would be today with all those fancy mathemathics (hah!). Anyways, Raspuling is a generic guy, so he probably have no idea how to use a non decimal number system, or at least how to implement one. It's somewhere along the lines of black color would be much better for photosynthesys, and yet green is used. Not even nature uses the most effective ways, but one that simply works well enough.
If the literacy rate is so badly skewed, perhaps it's best if Max introduced english as a unifying script. The original three can live on through traditionalists (and later to scholars) but in order for a unified Equestria to maintain cohesion, and with streamlined exchanges of thoughts and ideas, they need a universal alphabet installed as soon as possible.
7443676 Yeah Max was kinda wordy this chapter and briefly sails off into tangents from time to time
7444209
Actually, it's not a matter of finding the best solution, it's a matter of solving a difficult problem.
Leaves are green because none of the six photosynthetic pigments used by plants absorb it. (Chlorophyll a absorbs red and violet and most plants pair that with Chlorophyll b to absorb indigo, blue, yellow, and orange more effectively.
Despite cooking up special pigments that plants don't have, like Chlorophyll d and Chlorophyll f to allow deep-ocean algae to live on "far red"/"near infrared" light (The invisible light that your camera's CCD sensor registers as violet-white light if you point your TV remote at it and press a button. Heat is "far infrared".), evolution has yet to stumble upon something which works for green and yellow-green. (Dark-leafed Norway Maple cultivars like the Crimson King and the schwedleri attain that dark colour by some combination of omitting certain photosynthetic pigments and adding non-photosynthetic pigments.)
(Yes, I currently have nothing better to do with my time than look all of that up from a vague memory that plants use multiple photopigments with overlapping photopigments.)
In fact, the reason trees turn all sorts of different colours in autumn is because the photopigments fade at different rates and in different amounts, depending on time and species.
7444263 That's not the point I was trying to made about plants. Simply put, by a pure physics standpoint, black would be much more effective at absorbing energy, yet life choose green and red and the like. (This actually was thrown up in satellite imaging class to show that random planets might have random-colored plants on them, life doesn't always use the most effective ways).
7444253 Literacy only really kicked off realtive recently even here on Earth, and if there is a used script it's much better to learn it before tossing everything out of the window and teaching everyone a totally new language. While it might be possible due to the low literacy rate, teachin everyone a totally new written language is a bloody nightmare. Maybe try to use some mixed one from the three languages, so it's easier to learn. Albeit it's possible that the few ponies Raspuling will teach english might spread it, as it's a realtively easy language to pick up (it gets harder later on). Or the races would just argue whose language the mixed wan was based on more and the princesses would just get fed up with it.
7444281
And I understood your point. I was clarifying that life didn't "choose" anything. Despite millennia of evolution, life has yet to find a chemical which will convert green light to energy effectively.
(That's not to say they don't exist... merely that it's either difficult or impossible to evolve them without some kind of downside, similar to things like wheels and gears being too incapable of healing or the genes which code for malaria resistance causing sickle-cell disease when received from both parents.)
(Nature rarely produces gears because it takes special circumstances to work around the risk of broken cog teeth.)
7444305 Actually Scishow made a video about that waaaaaay back, then funly enough.
And for that "choose", dude i'm going for easy to write, I think you got the meaning. This is a comment section, and it's past midnight here, I'm not going to bother making everything perfectly scientifically correct if I can get the idea across in much more shorter and easier way.
7444341
Fair enough. I know all too well what it feels like to post when it's late.
7444281 As long as there is a common tongue to verbally exchange and teach a new script, it'll be fine to introduce it to the newer generations, adults will probably continue on the old ways while *struggling to learn the new one but it'll be fine.
To a degree
Probably...
7444426 Yeah, and since qute a large amount of people are illiterate, it wouldn't affect even most of the older population, but it would affect administraive and already written down stuff. It would take a buttload of effort to translate everything that's not been destroyed by Discord, Even with the short two year peroid. Albeit still easier sooner than later. By the by do pones have printing presses/magical writing tools(ctrl+c-ctrl+v spell), or do they just duplicate everything by hoof..mouth?
7444253
It wouldn't be practical for ponies to use English, because it just puts so much stress on Earth Ponies and Pegasi to write it.
I saw a video that had an explanation for three different languages. Basically, Earth Ponies use a type of Morse Code as their language because it's easier to write dots and lines than it is to write full letters, and it explains the "two-buttoned type-writer" we've seen in the show.
Pegasi had a more developed language because of their greater dexterity but it was still the same concept.
Whereas unicorns had full letters because they're able to write them using magic.
English would only be practical with magic-users as Earth Ponies and Pegasi can't write the letters as easily.
7446200 Well then get all of them to write a modified version of normal h0rs3

7451960 Yes, the main argument is not the tiny love factory, but the fact that it's 1000 years before and puppies. I mean, Puppies! Anyways, it would be curious to see if they have domesticated wolves already, or can Raspuling start it, by starting to care for a few wolf pups, and slowly selecting the best of them. I mean, we humans used them for hunting (and cus dogs are awesome), which is something ponies wouldn't really need. Heck, wolves should be extremely dangerous to them. And yet we've seen Winona.
Also, holy crow lad, that's a lot of errors. I sorta gave up on pointing them out, but nice one catching them.
7456135 You leave quill alone, I like having a list of my mistakes. It makes clean-up easier.
...when I eventually get around to it.
7475138 Actually, and I can't believe I have someone asking me about this, those are in the show. One stepped on Trixie's wagon. Yes I refer to the Ursa's as space bears. What else would I call them?
Technically speaking, English is written in a form of the Latin script, which has undergone a series of refinements and modifications over the years, with our modern form of the Latin alphabet based on the late renaissance scripts that were used as the model for the typesets used in the earliest printing presses.
Technically speaking.
