Forgot that Discord's magic would bungle things up,
Granted, without that stuffed magic nose, he would not have been able to prioritize between passing out and pleasuring Luna.
Some serious retraining is on-route.
Judging from the lack of a Crossover tag, I'm going to assume this story has nothing to do with LoL's Twisted Fate?
7300122 Nope, that was entirely incidental
Nnnoooot entirely, but I would be hard pressed to do a much better explanation myself, so we can let it slide.
I would've expected him to be dismissed by intellectuals right at the start due to Semmelweiss effect. Can still happen though. Those few who believed him would be ridiculed, and kicked out of everywhere. Which can lead them to the employment of the
ir changeling overlordnight court.I am so remembering that.
Maximus? Is it his name, or just Luna replacing Max's name while panicked?
Hey, now that I think about it, Max is going to be a bit like Rasputin? Have the ear of the queen and thus tremendous amount of power in the entire country? And will be killed till he was dead, because he gave bad advice?
It's not exactly lightning or electricity that we see that move the body...It's bio electric...something that doesn't even use any electron...That is why EMP doesn't do anything to human.
I would have started off with the basics of indoor plumbing.
Step one) get a Pegasus to bring some clouds to fill a tank on the roof
Step two) run clay piping from there
Step three) invent a toilet that works with quadrupeds
7300180 One of the speculation about rasputin is that he was killed by british secret service as he was opposed to an operation which would end up with huge russian losses but the same operation was important to british interests, besides the ponies don't have the guts to kill him.

You need a rubber stopper.
Waterproof hinges, chain, etc.
So some advance copper/bronze metalworking (tiny chain would be hard and take lots of labor)
Rubber stopper. Do you know how to synthesize durable, flexible, long lasting rubber?
Don't forget sewage treatment!
Quite frankly, indoor plumbing requires quite a few advanced disciplines...
* Chemistry (Rubber)
* Manufacturing (making the tiny chain, pipes, cheap enough that ponies other than the royalty can afford them) Which means several techniques of mass production of chains.
* Pumps (For moving water and waste) - would require knowing how to manufacture them and a source of power.
* Valves (Float valve to stop tank from overfilling)
* Knowledge of the S trap and why it is important.
* etc...
Yeah... modern toilets didn't come about until 1850's. When there was serious manufacturing being done and had lots of infrastructure.
7300462 actually you don't need half that stuff, yes modern plumbing is built on it but it's not required, various estates and monarchs had plumbing installed throughout the centuries. Wood, cork, clay, copper and lead soder is enough to get you going. Many countries developed working sewer systems that utilized existing waterways and simple steam driven pumps to evacuate waste long before they came up with running water. Philadelphia's sewer and water system dates back to 1801 even
I'm just talking about the toilet here, they don't intend to drink that water so lead contamination isn't a huge issue. Like there is a lot that can be done without modern seals, plus the u-bend isn't exactly complicated, it just took someone realising that odors are part of gas not the aether
7300460 Maybe now, but back then they can go nuts if in a group. If you are in one people do a lot of nasty things simply by virtue of others doing it as well.
As for Rasputin, he was hated to an extreme degree already in russia, it would've been absolutely unnecessary for the british to intervene.
7300462 Plumbing was done by the Romans way before people started using rubber, so it's possible. Lead was used, as it was useful for like everything, abundant and easy to work with (and it was also consumed which resulted in some ridiculous amount of mentally damaged nobles, including rulers, but that's another story), but simply tightening it really strong could work well enough. Or just welding together the necessary parts with magic. Ruber stopper is only necessary for stuff you need to remove relatively regularly, so you can't just make a strong seal by sheer force, as you might need to take those apart.
7300495
I thought about the ancient toilets... but most of them were glorified hole over river/aqueduct... with no sewage treatment
Which sucked for people downstream. It would help a bit with sanitation in the city/town but would still make rivers extremely dangerous to drink from.
Lead pipes can be very dangerous for your population.... if the water is even slightly acidic people will get lead poisoning.
Ceramic pipes would be much safer (and can be made with their technology level)
7300521 Only meant as an example, I would expect Max not to be stupid enough to use lead. That thing is is probably the most well known poisonous metal along with mercury, so it's a common knowledge. So common actually that nobody really thinks to check it and I can imagine ponies using it at first without Max noticing, then him getting a freakout when it gets revealed.
Medieval technology level cheramics might not be that strong though. You would need thin tubes for them not to collapse, and horse waste is not exactly small, so it might cause some problems. The underground stuff could be made with bricks though as it was done historically.
And yes, sewage treatment is a really modern idea. You can lead it into the fields though. It can act as a fertilizer, and the ground can slowly filter the water, if there are enough layers.
7300480
Opps, I forgot about cork.
Yeah. Ancient water toilets and Monarchies....
Not exactly priced for the masses, because everything had to be made by hand. Without industrialization, they are too expensive for the masses (who are dirt poor farmers/serfs/etc).
And the 1800's were well into the industrial age.
Equestria literately is a medieval society that just lost a good portion of it's knowledge because of Discord. So it would be more equivalent of Europe somewhere around 500-1000?
Excited does not explain me when seeing this update. Especially these days where I'm moving stuff to deadfics in droves.
7300532
Good idea!
We had some ceramic pipe on our farm (no longer in use) for taking water from the barn roof and putting it into a watertank. The pipe walls were a half inch thick and the pipe was 4 inches wide.
If their ceramics are half as strong... then just make it twice as thick.
Ok. There are problems with this.
Problem 1: The amount of water/waste is constant... the amount a field needs is sporadic and variable.
Yes. Lets build an aquaduct of shit to go down by the farms so they can do flood irrigation with it. But the farmers are only going to want to use it at certain times.... they wouldn't use any of it during winter for example.
Problem 2: Disease transferred to food.
The sewage can get pathogens on the food, and leave pathogens in the soil. (ex carrots)
I'm wondering about septic systems... but I would have to do some more research.
7300584
Well, they would need to be able to make that twice as thick pipes (big arse furnace->problems with heat not being constant on the entire lenght of the segment->not changing shape uniformly->tiny cracks in the material), and they also need to fit into the walls. Also the material itself will have some flaws which is reduced by improving the technology. And twice as thick is not always twice as strong, if for nothing else due to it needing to keep more of its weight up. More of an issue for building materials, but can be applied here as an example.
Ah. I should've though of this. Septic systems... Hmm I don't think they are really common knowledge, so Rasputinling might not know jack about it. I certainly don't, albeit I always lived in cities, where it was kind of impossible to use localised septic tanks.
There's a spy in our midst!
Debates about plumbing aside, I wonder where this story will go next now that he is on his own. What impact will he have on the nobles and what happens if changelings show up now
7300839 Well, nobles would certainly see it a a challenge of their status. Here's the secondary princess, just picking up some random bug from the ground, who is now immediately above them, with the power to overrule anything they say. And I would assume he would do that more frequently than the princesses, due to modern "What the frick mate?" -o meter. Also it would give a main conflict to the story to drive it forward.
Um, what? When did this happen? Discord is free now? I can't help but feel this is the sort of thing we should know about... from something other than an idle thought from Celestia.
7301391 chapter 2, actually. There was a whole discussion where Discord talks to Celestia( still with a book, there are just so many strange things people write).
7301665 Ah, right. I stopped checking at chapter three. I guess after three months it got a little hazy and buried under all the 'apparent un-noteworthiness' of it... seriously, nopony seems to give a fuck that Discord is at large!
7302560 The only one who really knows is Celestia, I don't think I've had her talk to Luna about it, but there's really not much anyone can do about it. The fact that he found somewhere else to play is also important, as he's just not interested in tormenting ponies anymore.
I love it!
Hey, Reykan, I've heard a sentence in this video that might be relevant for this story
So basically, unlike in the modern world, where knowledge is the most important commodity, back in the day scientist were just smart people messing around with stuff in their free time without it really getting anything. So all those scholars pones have, are simply nobles who just though learning new stuff is a good way to spend their money (paid by the commoners of course).
Nice story Reykan looking forward to the next chapter, when you skip the clop it's surprisingly interesting :)
You might want to tweak the summary. Every time a new chapter of this arrives, I put off reading it because it doesn't ring a bell... then I eventually read it and quickly realize that I've got a new chapter of one of the fics I currently look forward to most.
In fact, I'm just reading two chapters in a row because I kept putting it off.
The problem is that, as-is, you're putting far too much focus on the setup and no mention whatsoever of memorable characteristics of the story content. It'd be as if the summary of the first Harry Potter book was something along the lines of "One Halloween, the Dark Lord Voldemort decided to eliminate a thorn in his side. (end of summary)"
(Now that I think about it, this seems to be an ongoing issue with you. The main thing that served to anchors The Substitute Demon's story page with my memories of its content well enough for the name to start ringing a bell was that image, which is the only post-Silver/Gold image of a substitution doll I've ever seen.)

(1) wrong, it's not the nerves of the, it's the brain. The brain (just like the center of the spinal column) is composed of nerves without myelin (hence the reason it's grey,
(2) in other words, Max's nervous system can tolerate and survive an electrical discharge from the brain that's 50,000 times what the brain heart can tolerate before it stops beating. And what happened to the internal organs and the glands the body has? Do THEY receive a larger amount of electricity just to make sure they're nice and burnt like charcoal?
(3) again with stupidity, no. It's not the electric impulses of the brain that make the nerves move. Without sodium and potassium ions outside the walls of the nerves, the nerves can't be stimulated and thus the reason why your heart and lungs have stopped beating. If that wasn't the case then cyanide wouldn't be a deadly poison, just electrify me and I won't die.
(4) there are no such things as "sets of muscles" there are types of muscle. Why? Because all the internal organs of a body are considered muscles, despite the tremendous amount of difference they have with each other.

1) Max is not a scholar, he's using half remembered information and it might not all apply.
2) It might not be lightning in the traditional sense, but it's still electrical signals. Remember, civilisation here still doesn't have indoor plumbing, do you think then they'd understand the concept of electricity, electrolytes or any of the chemical processes that occur in nerve cells? Lightning is at least a concept they are familiar with.
Okay, wow, live experimentation. Wouldn't, I dunno, a dissected frog leg be a million times safer?
Or have they not 'invented' dissection yet?
7952527 Whoa there, buddy! That's an amphibian's life you're talking about.
OK, this line is fucking great.
Yes.
Hmmm, that disgusted one concerns us...

This actually sounds diabetic in my mind. this fic has diabetic changelings heh
