M.A.N.E.

Mutually Assured Nuclear Extinction.

For fifteen years Equestria has been involved in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with their neighbour to the northwest, the Union Of Saddle Republics. The doctrine of M.A.N.E. has kept things relatively peaceful so far- both nations know that any nuclear attack will be met by a response in kind, and that there are no winners in a nuclear war. But now, border disputes and a few trigger happy ponies threaten to turn the cold war hot...

We have only read the first chapter of the story, and we are hooked!:pinkiehappy:

This is the first Cold War type story we have read so far on this site and we think it's a good one.
Favorite and Like.:scootangel:

3910832 Glad you like it! I had noticed a distinct lack of this kind of story so I thought I would try and fill in the gap :twilightblush:

Great pacing so far! We're getting closer to war I see! I've always wondered how a story like this would turn out, and so far, it's impressed me!

this is the prequel to Fallout Equestria

Well done. I haven't seen a story that captures the cold war feel and then the escalation to nuclear war.

I love this story! Finally a cold war/nuclear war fic! I could have never done it as good as this you're awesome!:pinkiehappy:

Oh dear god. It's Threads all over again. Congratulations, sir; you have succeeded on making me literally quake in my boots.

Just my intention! I love Threads, as much as one can love such a depressing film, and that's exactly what I was aiming for. In fact, I stole a bit of dialogue from it! 'Forget the first aid kit and fetch me something to cover him up with...' Glad you like it! Other things have taken my attention, but someday i hope to continue the story.

It's a good one so far. My only issue is... Why is Pinkie acting like a 6 year old?:rainbowhuh: I doubt she'd be ignorant to the prospect of death, or have little to no sense of preservation when the bombs fall, and might even understand how it works. I imagine Rainbow being the ignorant one, not caring about what it does but only that it goes boom and makes a huge fireball. That alone kinda cracks the illusion. Beyond that, love the bit 'bout the apples wanting a bomb shelter. If you aren't prepared, you may as well be dead.

Well, because that's how Pinkie always acts! Remember how she just laughed at the prospect of death/capture/whatever in the forest in the first episode? She even had a song about it. Rainbow's obsessed with the Wonderbolts, and in this story that extends to the rest of the military, which is why she knows more about the bombs than the others.

Maybe I'm just desperate to think that things couldn't get this far- and I didn't grow up during the Cold War, so what do I know?- but how do you jump from getting "small" nukes used against you on a local battlefield to actually launching at the other country? The USR think they got hit with a tactical nuke, so they start launching their own tacticals, and then an Equestrian division actually does hit them with some tacticals, so... time for the end of the world?:rainbowhuh:

:rainbowderp::fluttercry:
I enjoy this sort of fic a lot more than I should, mostly because I've got to know how things can get so bad. And in a way this was actually easier for me to read than, say, Equestria: Total War or A Kingdom Divided, since the nature of a nuclear exchange means less on-the-ground fighting and we don't have to see the mane cast get directly involved (at first) and wear their morals down to nubs- this was more of a political thriller, at least until the bombs hit. Funny that we don't see more stories involving nuclear war that tell both "before and "after"- the bombs are either the end or backstory- so that's another plus for you.

5843953 Precisely. The concept of mutually assured destruction relies on the inevitable escalation of nuclear warfare. It starts as a first strike, sometimes a small attack, as you can see in some of the attack simulations in the movie WarGames. Sometimes, however, a massive attack is the first strike. It usually starts as a deteriorating political, military, or economic situation between two or more parties.

This looks interesting, but why has this reappeared without new chapters?

My version of an Emergency Broadcast Message in a situation like this

We Interrupt Normal Programming, This is Not a Test, Please Stand By for an Urgent Emergency Message.

**AlertReady Tones**

The following message is transmitted by order of Princess Celestia, and the Equestrian National Guard. This is an Attack Warning, Repeat: This is an Attack Warning. At 6:18 PM EST (Equestrian Standard Time) The Priority Mercury Defense Command detected the launch of over 300 Nuclear Missiles from the USR. Targets cannot be determined at this time. All residents of Equestria must seek a fallout shelter immediately, If you cannot find a fallout shelter, local authorities will lead you to one. fallout is a dangerous product of Nuclear Attacks. Be sure to have enough Food and Water for 14 days and have a battery powered radio with you. The Missiles are believed to impact their targets within the next 10-15 minutes. Repeating: This is a Nuclear Attack Warning, A Nuclear Attack Is taking place against Equestria,
This message will replay in 30 seconds

If I remember correctly soviets run their own economy into trash compartment and then failed spectacularly.

This story is very strange in a sense that it implies that USA would rebel against the Queen of England, only this time both sides has nukes and at each other throats with the same conflicting philosophy of comrade Glimmer.

I realize that this story is cartoonishly forcing Equestrians to use nuclear option as fast as possible but...

What happened to the rolling their nuclear bombers airborne almost immediately at the first sign of trouble? Equestrians are really slow to act and at this point, they should have realized how insane the other side was.

Historically there was a computer glitch that spooked a military officer into not doing anything stupid, and he probably saved all of our lives in the process.
